"Movies so goddamn bad, they go the other way and become good "

What you got for movies so terrible they cross over and become good?

I ask because I just saw Face/Off. I've never seen it, I avoided it in the 90s because I knew it was bad then. After seeing it referenced in a reddit thread I decided to take a look and I was glad I did! This movie is hot garbage coated in honey. I loved every horrible second of it.

DUDE WAS MAD RAPEY WITH IT.

Also bad/good:

Acrimony - if you've never seen a Tyler Perry flick do this one. Goddamn. Fuego de basura.

Fatal Afair - Omar Epps' fat face starring as everyone's favorite Nigerian uncle in, a Peter Sullivan original starring Nia Long and her white daughter in what could only be described as every BET original movie distilled. You'll laugh, you'll be confused, you will be entertained.

what you got?

i mean one of the feature shots is of the plane on the runway w/ hydraulics and gold rims. i dont think they went into this to make a masterpiece.

i absolutely love it and if i catch it on i usually watch the rest of it.

Turned it on and immediately realized this was only good because I was a kid when it came out.

Under the Cherry Moon is only good because of the music. The actual story is lame as fuck but I still love it.

Edit: Acrimony was good. That shit had me rolling when he finally cashed out. The look on his ex wife’s face when he left and she was left with her sisters. Real tears.

... Under the Cherry Moon and I was the only one in the group who had seen it. Which was weird and embarrassing because I'm not, like, a Prince superfan and truthfully expected that a roomful of people who drove all the way out to Chanhassen to see Prince's house two years would also be a room full of people who'd seen Under the Cherry Moon.

But apparently not.

Anyhow, hard agree on the movie. It's... real bad but still incredibly watchable for the music, for the giant swing and miss, and for Kristin Scott Thomas, who I also usually like.

Relatedly, that's an incredibly weird tour. I would highly recommend it to anybody. Exactly the right blend of mindblowing cool and mindblowing strange. When it was over, they led us into a room where Prince's performance from the Superbowl was playing on a TV. The guide introduced the clip to us, and mentioned that she regards it as one of the finest live music performances of all time, and then looked *me* dead in the eye and said, "Which makes sense, because after all, he was The One."

The cinematography is awesome and Travolta/Cage ham it up to the absolute max.

I don't know if i would legit call it bad, but the premise is laughable on its face...and they just barrel through with it so hard, you just gotta go with it

it was meant for a very specific time and it was designed for the theatre in a movies-as-entertainment context. its not supposed to be art to be considered later. it's meant to be consumed, enjoyed and forgotten.

the acting when you think about is really fucking good.
cage and travolta were the dudes playing the dude disguised as other dudes. it was a class in body language and communication styles.

also, travolta's character was messy as fuck. his whole maverick shtick got people killed at every turn.

In response to Reply # 10

It's just terrible, ain't no way that movie is good except how much it's fooled people into believing it's worth watching; that movie is just as terrible as Garbage Pail Kids...TERRIBLE.

.... then it fits. Because that's the entire point of "so bad it's good"

With the exception that it didn't "fool" anyone. It routinely finds it's way into this subject. Everyone knows it's terrible, and that's exactly what people like about it.

Because...that's the entire point of "so bad it's good".

13. "Samurai Cop is basically incompetence as performance art"
In response to Reply # 0

It's astoundingly bad, and not just in terms of basic criteria.

It's sheer incompetence, through and through.

The acting is horrible, even by 80's b movie standards.

The lead was Sylvester Stallone's bodyguard.

Not an actor who was also a bodyguard. Just a bodyguard.

There are parts where, for example, the lead is clearly wearing a wig.

A very lazy wig at that. A wig so over the top obvious that it may as well have been a neon sign that said "yeah we're not even trying, and we don't give a fuck". There are reasons for that, when you research the film, but holy hell did that shit stand out.

But everything bad that can be in movies, is significantly worse in this movie.

There's bad dialogue, and then there's Samurai Cop dialogue.
There's bad acting, and then there's Samurai Cop bad acting.

There's hackneyed, unnecessary, awkward sexualization, and then there's Samurai Cop.

It's so awful, that's it's one of the best films ever made. It's worth watching for it's high level of incompetence.

Here are some great examples:

https://youtu.be/Fvni9KbZfoo
https://youtu.be/VFtynaXV7Ak
https://youtu.be/dc2KM40urKU

But you really have to watch this shit all the way through, to get the full glory of it all.

I hesitated to list it here.

The visuals were awesome, DMX/Method Man/Lennox/Rico put in good performances.

The random Gummo clip makes me really happy.

Nas/T-Boz are some of THE worst actors I've ever seen in a "real movie"

I watch this shit every New Years, it kinda feels like a fever dream where it's really intense but at the same time doesn't make a lot of sense.

To be fair to Hype, I clearly remember DMX on the radio saying he had a big plan and started with a ~$30 million budget, but as filming went on the company started getting scared because they weren't confident in DMX and Nas as stars (since they weren't big name actors) so they chopped his budget a few times. Sine they already spent some filming, they had to patch shit together on a shoestring which is why the story is choppy in a few places.

Very teachable moments that never stop being entertaining thanks to some really invested performances or truly batshit writing.

Nothing will ever top Face/Off in terms of big budget Hollywood production messes, though.

On the B-movie tip which we waded into above with Samurai Cop, Hard Ticket to Hawaii is a movie that knows it has no chance of being good and therefore makes a very conscious decision to be perfect instead.

It maybe has some implausible stuff going on, especially at the end, but hardly a bad movie. The worst part of that film is 50's acting, over the top Gerad Butler, and the very end.

Jackie Brown is one of my all time favorite South Bay movies. Carson, Compton, Torrance, Hawthorne (RIP Cockatoo Inn)

>But this was like Gardena/Wilmington/Pedro/Hawthorne. Baby
>cube even said "Harthorne" i was like YES lol.

Man me and my boys all got on the phone with each other to talk about it. "We were like, ey! They went down Redondo Beach Blvd! Or yo the filmed it Carson and Pedro!" Even the King Harbor tattoo on Nick Sobaka was legit.

>They had Samoans n shit.
You can't have a south bay flick without Samoans.

This may be one of those, "You had to be there," flicks. It came out in the 80's, but my college roommates and I didn't see it until the 90's, and to our defense we were mad high.

The only way to describe it is as a poor man's attempt at a Mel Brooks movie. It's George Hamilton, in all his tanned glory, as Zorro, and as his gay twin brother, Bunny, who has to stand in for him when he gets injured.

It is SO bad,and soooo politically incorrect. It's a cornucopia of 80's era gay and Mexican jokes.

At the time it generated so many quotables for me and my crew, but nobody else got it, because we're the only people I know who have seen it. To this day, I may get a random call from on of my old buddies..."Yo, turn on Starz Encore...three months to go!"

...and in that same vein, the movie Johnny Dangerously

My perspective on these are affected by my youthful nostalgia of watching them in my pre-teens. I still enjoy watching them for fun now, like I don't remember Face/Off being bad lol.

I think the VHS my family had of The Big Hit just doesn't even work anymore.

I'll always remember this one REALLY bad movie we rented intentionally, don't even remember the name of it, some terrible horror movie that had so many obvious 'mistakes'. Girl hiding in a basement behind see through 2x4s, killer doesn't see them. Car facing one way when they park in driveway is facing the other way when they come back outside o drive away in it. It was like bloopers you didn't even have to look for.

watched it on xmas last year.
i really enjoyed how bad it was, had to google what others say about it and found this breakdown:

https://www.theringer.com/2017/6/22/16040720/road-house-patrick-swayze-good-bad-movies-5670135550c

spot on.

Over the Top with Sly Stallone is another one that's bad but still kinda fun. Roadhouse is less fun but more comical
imo.

The fact that this was a Lucas production, and a passion project that took over a decade to get made, only to shit the bed by making a movie that stripped damn near everything worthwhile from the source material is a farce in itself.

Me and my siblings loved this joint when we were kids. It's such weird film

But there are so many gems to mine from this, right on down to theme song, and Lea Thompson hooking up with an anthromorphic duck, all with a straight face.
