"black female Seattle police chief announces her retirement..."

the city council voted overnight to give her a 6 figure paycut, I guess that was part of the "defund" movement, she'll probably be replaced by a white man that are a lot less sympathetic to our causes...

https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/11/us/seattle-police-chief-budget-cut-4-million/index.html

(CNN)Police Chief Carmen Best announced her retirement Monday night, shortly after the Seattle's City Council voted to cut nearly $4 million from the police department's budget.

Best's announcement came on the same day the council approved the mid-year budget cut from the police department's 2019-2020 budget of $400 million.
The reduction to the police department budget will equate to $11 million over the course of a year, an amount that is far less than a 50% budget cut that had earlier been discussed.
The city council rebalanced the budget in light of the economic crisis brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic and calls to redistribute funds from policing to community programs in the wake of the protests following the death of George Floyd, Seattle City Council President M. Lorena González said in a statement.

"I want to thank Mayor (Jenny) Durkan for her continuous support through good times and tough times," Best said in a letter to members of the police force obtained by CNN. "I am confident the department will make it through these difficult times."
Best said her retirement will be effective September 2.
Durkan said the city is losing an unmatched leader.
"Her grit, grace and integrity have inspired me and made our city better," Durkan said in a statement. "These last months, I knew Chief Best was the person to lead our city through this challenging time, to reimagine policing and community safety."
"Reducing the budget of the Seattle Police Department is a response to the calls for advocating for racial justice and investments in BIPOC communities," González said.
Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best holds a press conference outside of the departments vacated East Precinct.
Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best holds a press conference outside of the departments vacated East Precinct.
The budget reduction calls for cutting 32 officers from patrol, reducing specialized units and administrative costs, cutting training and travel expenses, transferring victim advocates to the human services department and removing two sworn officers from the 911 emergency call center.

The city's 911 calls involve criminal activity 56% of the time, and González said resources and funds can be better allocated by involving other services.
"What we can do is allow our police to focus on what they are trained to do and fund service providers addressing the more complex issues of housing, substance use disorder, youth violence prevention, affordable healthcare, and more," she said.
The budget still must go to Durkan, who can sign it into law, not sign and allow it to become law or veto it, spokesperson Kelsey Nyland said.
In June, Durkan asked the council to cut about $20 million from the budget of the police department to deal with a city shortfall of $378 million stemming from lower tax revenue and increased demand on services during the Covid-19 pandemic. The proposed cut to the police department was the largest reduction in the mayor's budget proposal.
At the time, Durkan asked the police department to come up with plans to cut up to 50% of its spending in next year's budget.
CNN's Joe Sutton and Jennifer Henderson contributed to this report.

In the name of ...racial Justice. They’re also on video harassing black cops. In the name of...Racial Justice.

It seems those who survived the anarchy of the CHOP feel differently than the fringe elements do about it:

but I still have no sympathy overall.

Just because the police chief is Black doesn’t change the fact that it’s the police chief. They get moved around like chess pieces so it’s not being done because she is Black.

Cops are getting silicon valley salaries to run around dressed up like Decepticons and harass black and brown people and be glorified club bouncers.

their base pay is fairly low, around 100K i believe, but they do all these overtime hustles.

some of em hitting 300K.

as this is my city, i'm conflicted on all this shit. i liked that we had a black, woman police chief. however, not much was changing under her watch. to be fair to her, i'm not sure what she could change. she probably could have changed more but i'm sure there's things people (protestors/the community) clamor for that she really just has no real control over.

and i mean, i support defund the police. i know some people here a calling in to question getting her out and that it's weird that people calling for racial justice also got out a black female chief...but she chose to resign and i don't even blame her. i'm not sure anyone wants to be chief right now. i don't think her being black matters as far as defund the police goes - they would have wanted any chief out who wasn't bending to the will of people. i dunno. shit is complicated.

she probably made the right decision but i feel for her but my concern is also tempered by the fact that she is a cop and too many cops are out here violating.

so yeah. i guess i made zero points in my reply. i dunno. shit's tough.

That sounds crazy.

I know we want to believe all the cops are guns blazing but most of them never discharge their weapon.

Not downplaying the danger of being of a cop but it’s not like you have to do much to become one.

out.

Get the racists and white supremacists out and get more of us in but with the current climate its hard to convince some young blacks to consider a career in law enforcement despite to potential high income.

one thing i feel the would fix most departments in america is there HAS be a higher standard to become a cop and a lot more vetting.

like, the problem is shitty people want that job and it's too easy for shitty people to get that job which is why there are so many cops that are either just bad at the job or, even worse, straight up racist.

if the force is full of racists, that's gotta be right near the top of things that would stop more black people from becoming officers.

which is why we don't need people like Carmen Best stepping down. I'd be willing to bet a bunch of racists retired as soon as she was appointed. The ones that stayed are rejoicing that she is gone.

i don't disagree.

i dunno. it's just like weird bunch of shit crashing together at the right?/wrong? time.

like i said, my cousin is personal friends with her and said he will speak w/ her but i dunno if he'll share with me. i'll definitely ask him though, lol. i want the tea.

i love Seattle to death but the Seattle i love is more or less dead too. shit has just changed in that city so much over the last 20 years the place is almost un-recognizable from where i grew up.

even though my nature is urban living, i have zero doubt i'm much happier living about 20 mins out from the city than i'd be if i actually lived there still (if i could even afford it now, lulz).
