good chance to show his dramatic range

I like how they're doing this, showing what lead up to the guy that turned on Hampton and all the conflict/tension that goes along with that not just the typical "Civil Rights Leader gets murdered" story that we usually get

how badly he wanted to play Hampton, his *reason* for wanting to play him (as a Black American), and how moved he was after reading the script (said he was emotional for like 5h), it's hard not to see the casting as a bit of an injustice tbh:

https://youtu.be/CryyQ2RwOXs?t=472

And then to top it off he resembles Hampton quite a bit more than Kaluuya.

I'm sure the argument for casting Kaluuya boiled down to some bankability calculus since he's oscar-nominated or whatever. I do really like both Kaluuya and Lakeith as actors, so it's no shade to Kaluuya.

But damn. After hearing Lakeith talk about how much the script resonated, you can't tell me he wouldn't have gone to the ends of the earth with his performance. It was personal for him. I wish we could see it.

A little disappointing, but I'm sure he absolutely rocks it as the antagonist too. Hollywood needs to start doing better tho.

I think the film would be stronger with the roles being reversed as well, but I hope they pull it off. I also notice some subtle (and unnecessary) changes to Fred’s speeches in the trailer I saw on LaKeith’s IG (assuming it is the same trailer as the one posted here but haven’t double checked because I’m typing this at 2am).

I’m also wary of the film having 16 producers listed on IMDb which smacks of too many cooks in the kitchen. One of said producers produced The Help which is not, ahem, helpful.

Finally, I need Chairman Fred’s critiques of capitalism to be featured, no hint of which is in the trailer.

Peace,

Spirit (Alan)

I’m curious who has more screen time. Might be that Darius (imma call him Darius) has more range and carries the film?

We shall see. I’m really excited to watch this.

The trailer lays out the story well. Still aghast that the story centers the snitch who set Fred up to be killed. Hoping the majority of the film is centered on Fred but have zero faith in Hollywood. Praying that Coog is in the editing studio making sure the magic is in the final cut.

The music is fire btw. Ludwig?

1. I don't think old dude is a good actor. He has not shown me much depth in the roles he's chosen yet. Bug eyes and tears do not signify good acting.

2. I dislike how the treacherous betrayer is a central character, like the story is abt him and told from his pov. Fuck that vermin person. Yes it is the history however I don't want to identify or commiserate with that person. He should burn for his crimes.

3. The idea that British actors are intrinsically better than everyone else is absurd. Fuck England and their drama schools

4. It would have come out the day before my birthday and I'd have been there the day it dropped. Now I dunno when I'll see it or any other movie in a theater with some popcorn and a Arizona iced tea I snuck in ever again and that fills me with malaise

5. I will see it and if they do a shitty job of this film I will never forgive anyone associated with it

Daniel was great as Fred...he carried the heaviness, the humility and the discipline well...he had charisma and charm when it was called for...his speeches were electrifying.

LaKeith just breaks my heart in this...he got stuck between a rock and a hard place...lets not forget that in real life, Bill was 17 YEARS OLD. a literal child...the feds victimized him at an age where he was malleable...its fucked up that they used him and destroyed him like that...

powerful film.

the performances were really strong, but i wonder if the movie would have felt any different with actors who at least looked the ages they were supposed to be. when the guy in the bar said "he's just a kid" i took it as them saying he's too young to be a fed. I didn't know O'neal was supposed to be 17 until read this.

the black wo/man struggles in america movies. reminds me it's
really sad they were so young and the hate runs really deep. the
cinematography, set design, and music are great though.

in real life, im more interested in what the young kids bring to the table.

1. Shot out to the Homey Shaka King. He is a good dude and deserves any success that comes from this.

2. This isn't Malcolm X. I should have prepared myself for this going into it, it would have managed my expectations.

3. Fred Hampton was only 21!!! Like that should be central thesis to this whole enterprise! I don't begrudge the British Black Actors, but the one thing they are unable to convey is that these were by our standards children dealing with this heavy ish.

4. This review is trash. shorturl.at/mAEW9. The problem with this film isn't with Hollywood co-opt'ing radical black history.

5. I don't mind so much time spent on the black FBI informant if they really dealved into the issue of black people betraying out own movements. That'a an important topic we need to discuss but this movie didn't do it. I didn't understand the character. LaKeith actually gave him TOO much depth because what we got was a character doing all these things that we couldn't understand why he was doing it. LeKeith played a torn character, but the actions didn't depict a torn character. A torn character would have had other motivations. All we saw was a dude facing a little bit of jail time who seemed to have been highly motivated by money. He wasn't donnie brascoe. That character didn't make sense in a way that hurt the movie.

6. The big difference between Fred Hampton and Malcolm X is that Fred Hampton was all a lot of unfulfilled potential . His love of black people came through in the movie. but not his motivation. Spike Lee's Malcolm X did that part sooo well. I ultimately left this movie wondering who was Fred Hampton.

7. Man I will never get use to 4k movies. This movie just kind of looked terrible to me. Not cinematic at all. I won't blame the production. I will blame my 4k TV and assume I am not ready for what movies will look like now and going forward.

8. Jay-Z murdered every rapper on that Soundtrack. Sorry Nas and Rakim.

I knew about the dual character arcs from interviews/media coverage ahead of the release

I did not expect to learn nothing about Fred

He enters the film as chairman Fred

No backstory
Did his folks end up in Chi during the great migration?
How did he get initiated into the BPP for self defense?
Why was a free breakfast program, health clinics, etc...needed?
Etc...

I feel like a more exploratory dive into Fred’s backstory would have established a more emotional connection

I fear yt pee poe are going to see a group of black militants killing cops and side with the Oneal character

...like he’s the good guy...

I mean, they’ve got Ralph Tresvant sniping cops

I learned so much more about Oneal than Fred...and that’s not what I signed up for

The only time I thought these characters were under 30 was when Fred and Deborah were flirting

Should have used younger actors.

^^^ The Murder of Fred Hampton...if you’re interested in what happened.

I agree more of a back story would’ve helped if you didn’t know anything about the Panthers.

only part that seemed a bit off was waltzing into the white power meeting and getting cosigns immediately.

In response to Reply # 45
Mon Feb-15-21 09:51 AM by bentagain

for self defense

Why was a local chapter in Chicago needed?
How did Fred get initiated into the party?
How did Fred get elevated within the party?
Being that Chicago is the HQ for the NOI...what was the relationship between Malcolm/NOI and the Chicago chapter?

Obviously, this wasn't the epic that Malcolm X was
But you get so much insight into Malcolm's journey in that movie
that when the climax of the assasination happens...you feel it
It has impact...because you saw the growth of the character

This movie spends a lot of time showing BPP members engaged in shootouts with the PD
Developing the character arc of the snitch

The murder...which we all know is coming...didn't really have that impact

I felt for Deborah...but we should have felt the loss too

Using older actors
No Fred backstory
= not much of a climax for a government sanctioned murder of a US citizen.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Hampton#Early_life_and_youth

SMH@more background on the wikipedia page than this movie.

Someone should do a mash up of stand up Bernie and stand up Kaluuya.

From what I remember from the flick, it was only two instances when Kaluuya did the Bernie Mac accent, right? When he was speaking one on one, I don't remember the accent being that hard to understand or being that over the top.

That's why I assume Fred's people were part of the great migration

That's really how some of my uncles still talk

It wasn't until I was grown that I actually understood what they were saying

It sounded like rapid fire jive gibberish to me as a kid

and my one uncle would start to stutter when he got excited too

LOL

anyway, that's exactly what the movie character reminded me of

They kind of f'd that up by playing some of Fred's actual speeches at the end

I understood every word of the real clips

Maybe they over exaggerated that aspect...because I never had a problem understanding Fred

even with the country accent.

thought lakeith was good casting for his role. He has that natural up to no good look about him.

Other than knowing Hampton was young and got shot while he was sleeping, didn't know that much more about him so it was educational to us.

How the f does agents shoot 99 times to Panthers 1 shot, and panthers get charged with attempted murder? Thats fked up.

It was a learning experience for us.

It was excellent.
I went in with low expectations. The trailer was not doing it for me. I've explained why elsewhere. But the trailer showed Kaluuya not having Fred's charisma or Fred's warmth. It showed him channeling his passion through anger. And that wasn't Fred. I went in hoping this wasn't gonna be another Queen & Slim. So again, expectations were real low.
But Kaluuya's Fred turned out to be great. He ended up displaying the warmth that was so central to Fred. He had the voice and cadence down pretty well. He did have some intense ass stares that were not quite Fred-like but lol oh well.

I think for myself, and plenty of others, people like Fred Hampton, Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali... They loom so large in the imagination, that no actor will ever BE that person. I don't care what you say about Denzel as Malcolm, that was Denzel. Same for dude in One Night In Miami. Same for Daniel in this role. And that's okay. He was great. As a side note, which is not a critique, it was weird to see Fred so small, all these people towering over him. Fred was a big dude.

It wasn't perfect though. Some of that was due to the time (and budget) constraints of a movie. Fred's uniting of the Chicago factions, for example. That played out really quickly. They mention the Crowns, Young Lords, Young Patriots, Stones, Disciples & Vice Lords (iirc), but only a couple scenes show this uniting. So, it was rushed. I would have loved to see more of that. The movie was already two hours long though. I take a little bit of issue with the Panther/Police interaction too. I don't think it makes the Panthers look like instigators of the conflict as various points, which decontextualizes it some. And, the popular narrative is that the Panthers are these tough guys... without acknowledging that the people who made the Panthers run were the women. The film largely, but not entirely, buys into that narrative too.

LaKeith was great, but like others have mentioned in regards to Fred's age, William O'Neal was only 17 and despite the opening scene where the Crowns say "he's just a kid" you don't ever really get a sense of just how young he is. Any of these people. Dominique Fishback was great as Deborah, and her scenes with Daniel, those intimate, tender moments were some of the best in the film.

I wish that Fred's politics were more centered in the film. They're not completely absent, but they're not the focus either. Neither is Fred's history or the history of the chapter or Chicago or anything like that, but that's asking a lot of a movie. The Chicago Panthers (or the Oakland Panthers) would be an incredible series if it could be handled with the same amount of care as this one.

Overall, I thought this was a step above One Night In Miami, which I also thought was great, and unless this year delivers so truly amazing films, I can't see it not being in my top 5 ten months from now.

But I also think that going into it with low expectations (based on Kaluuya's portrayl in the trailers) allowed me to enjoy it more than some of the people who went in with really high expectations.

reason I guess....

The cast is really the only reason I watched, I typically don't watch period pieces like this simply because I have very low expectations.

22 year olds 60 years ago were married with kids and far removed from school and working jobs. Today we still considering 22 year olds children not far removed from their parents nest. Don't believe just look at pictures of people the same age sixty years apart.

I think that yes, people (especially poor and poc) were forced into adulthood sooner than they are now, for a variety of reasons. But that does not mean that they were necessarily better equipped to deal with it, that they were any smarter, or more capable. They were still young as hell.

And with what we now know about brain development...

Hell we see the same thing with poor folks right now. Lots of people on this site (ie nerds) don't necessarily see it, but for folks at the bottom... plenty of them are married with families by 22. They're still young as hell.

Definitely young. I am just saying 22 today just doesn't exactly translate to 22 sixty years ago. I don't think its a 1 to 1 translation.

This is my entire criticism

I tried to express why that was

But it just didn’t hit like that.

Fred was the lineage
After X
After MLK
Fred was poised to fill that vacuum

WE should feel the impact of his murder NOW!

The repercussions reverberate to this day

The tragedy was not felt by this viewer.
