but it's looking like all of the hunger, neglect, and political firestorming by israel and other countries has led to systemic failures which would allow an accident like this.
people are being turned away from hospitals because the hospitals are either full or damaged

the biggest american conventional bomb. a factory that made ROCKET fuel. etc.
that is the biggest non-nuclear explosion i've ever seen outside of maybe a volcanic eruption (if you wanna count that as an explosion).
i'm not even surprised seeing some of these aftermath photos.
i feel for the citizens there. they are already in a tough spot due to a whole list of factors, including dealing w/ hunger issues. that huge building that's (to my surprise, actually) still standing next to the explosion site is the countries largest grain elevator from what i've seen reported. it's standing, but yes it's still destroyed.
if true about what it was that exploded, that explosion makes sense.
edit: i saw another tweet that i'll take at its word since i have no clue how to actually measure explosions that said if it was that much ammonium nitrate that this would actually be just a bit bigger then a ONE megaton nuclear explosion which would explain, at least to me, the nuclear-like appearance of the explosion (white cloud of steam where the heat instantly evaporates the water in the air, shock wave that follows).

hard to grasp the full size of it because it's been filled in by the sea, but it's that arc of land near the grain elevator (so just start drawing a circle from there). i'm guessing that's AT LEAST the size of Cowboys Stadium?
i mean, people said they felt and heard it in Cyprus which is 150 miles across the water.

Timothy McVeigh used 2 tons to do damage in Oaklahoma.
This blast used 2700 tons.
Also in the blast was a grain storage unit and grain. Grain explosions are a thing but its not clear yet if grain helped the boom.
Beirut also has a food shortage so this blast killed 85% of their grain supply as well as making the wheat stored their totally inedible.
THIS? This did not have to happen. Gov officials knew of/about the location of the ammonium nitrate for 6 fucking years. It was abandoned. It's crazy that this blast sits opposite of the food shortage because ammonium nitrate is a key ingredient in farming.
You want to know whats crazy though? This blast was big but also tame compared to historical ammonium nitrate related explosions. The biggest one happened in the US - 1947 Texas City Disaster 580+ people dead.
