if he takes down the kardashians and they take him down in response.

tho its more likely he would trash them and they would just divorce him and say he was crazy and abusive (with evidence you know they been collecting since day 1). and they would easily win out in terms of public opinion.

Unfortunately, the kardashians aren’t going anywhere
This shit adds like two more seasons to their show
Showing Kim dealing with the fallout

I just wish his old friends would rally around him and try to talk some sense into him
But who know if they have done that...several times already

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

Brainwashing wearing off.

Dude can see that the K-Klan is toxic and is trying to control him. Of course they are gonna paint him as crazy. Ain't nothing crazy about this tho: https://twitter.com/kanyewest/status/1285401653454069761/photo/1

Dude is starting to realize that some people around him DON'T have his best interests at heart. Also, I don't think he trusts Kim anymore.

They gonna do anything they can to get him back into that hospital for another brainwashing session. Wonder what hair color & eye contacts they gonna give him this time?

of Playboy, and to include a photo of them while talking about it.

Kim was an adult when she decided to do Playboy, so to compare your currently still children children to an adult making a decision regarding being naked in a magazine is gross.

I get it’s a shot at Kris but nah still weird.

hes basically saying he doesnt want his daughter to grow up to be like her.

he even made a reference to kris supposedly encouraging kim to sell the ray j sextape...and saying he will never allow that with north.

thats disgusting to involve your daughter in any sexual conversation and talk about her mother like that. in front of the whole world. shes gonna have to grow up and see that.

but its a clear window into how kanye really views kim.

but i mean...if thats what you think about her then why did you marry her?

doesn't know or has anyone in their life with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder

that's why he's marbling all these different theories and life events into each other

he's not well right now

trying to analyze any of this with critical thinking has to be seen through that lense

he is really not well

it's not an excuse for his misogyny and slut-shaming

he did the same thing to amber rose btw

but he is seriously not well

So I’m not going to act like this is super deep.

Could be due to them not supporting his presidential run or maybe he’s watched that RayJ tape one too many times.

Ionno, I think when you marry into that family you think you can handle it but these women are on another level. They prolly laughing at how long it took him to finally become a Billionaire.

I know he did after the robbery in Paris
But I can’t recall him behaving this way before they were married
Had she seen this side of him before that
She would have never married him
His instability is a huge liability

Before he was just a creative no one understood

It will be nearly impossible to bring down the kardashians
They have invested into so many different streams of income
And with kids/family stuff there will always be an interest
They are one of the few families that puts it all out there
Even though it’s PR crafted
That’s how they got put on
By bringing cameras into their lives

My boy is in LA in the music industry and I witnessed a woman say “can’t wait for you to meet my kid, she’s 7.. I just want to give her to you so you can make her a star”

I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if Kris is already planning their future and saying wild shit about how much money they can generate off these grandbabies.

he chose this shit tho.. all the women in the world and he chose Kim. Smh..

Are not named Kris Jenner..

None of the grand-babies have to work a day in their life..

Stage moms who say that shit are still “trying” to make it and/or live through their kids. I’ve seen it in LA and I’ve seen that shit in NY/NJ, Florida etc...

The only knock on LA is the proximity to fame and money. It all to easily can feel like you are “right there” and reap the benefits but if you haven’t actually done the real work the shit will never be yours and you might still fail. Can be a tough place to be.

Both these kids parents are individually Billionaires now..

Look at the evolution of previous generation.. from Kourtney to kylie..

Kourtney was oldest... had a cool little business but was really on her moms plan.. marry rich..

Kim came through and changed the paradigm for the whole family.. She saw what Paris was doing (simple life) and Her brother Brody (on The Hills) and built the world centered around the TV Show and upsold everything else..

The youngest Kylie is a hundred millionaire well before 25 because of all the runway given to by previous iterations.. she was gonna be good regardless but she ran with the ball having grown up in the public eye. She still utilizes her physicality but she is not operating any differently than her current generation whereas Kim was an outlier.

There is no reason to think the new generation will be any different.. they are extremely good but some of them may go on to innovate on the design..

and trying to color any of this as a reveal is disingenuous

they are simply white wealthy people who are interested in continuing to be rich, white and wealthy by any means necessary

which is why anyone who is struggling with anything real falls to the way side

odom, rob, kanye etc.

a simpleton can see that the kardashians are pariah, if you think Kanye having a manic episode reveals some great truth, or that the blinders are finally of you're not too smart.

he bought into the capitalist vampire lifestyle until he no longer benefitted from it

he thought they'd protect him, but that's not how it works

Is it really too hard to believe that the man realizes that he fucked-up sometime ago, and is lashing out because he's really scared and doesn't know how to get himself out of this situation?

They threw him in the 'hospital' before and he came out all fucked up. Now they (his 'family') are trying to do it again. He probably sees another 'hospitalization' or worse coming for him.

In response to Reply # 0

some main points:

1. GLC has seen Kanye having a manic episode before by the way he's forming his words, and the look in his eyes

2. he can't speak on who's around Kanye or the Kardashians because he doesn't know them well

3. GLC got Kanye to stop wearing the MAGA hats

4. he gave Kanye a list of demands to give to Trump and Kanye went off script

5. the Harriet Tubman theme was not a complete thought and should have been put in context

6. it alarmed him when Kanye talked about his wife and divorce and believes Kanye has been triggered by some recent personal event that stirred up things Kanye hasn't dealt with fully.

my opinion is, GLC is the only person Kanye trusts that actually cares for Kanye in a real way

these niggas is bouncing around hood knowledge and trying to put it up on a national platform when it should stay in the barbershops or on local politics

GLC actually has some good views on healthcare, community enrichment, gang/legit political and economic initiatives

Kanye takes the views of anyone who appears more informed or smarter around him & bastardizes it through his unwell mental health lense

and it gets marbled

GLC broke down what the whole Harriet Tubman thing was about and Van Lathan prior demolishes what Kanye was attempting to say

the episode breaks down simply what everyone should understand

Ye is having a really bad episode and needs help immediately

Fuck GLC though lol when I met Kanye back when I was 19 he invited me to his afterparty at House of Blues and I was like "I can't go, I'm 19" and he was like "Just flash the bouncer you will be good!"

And I remember GLC sitting behind us and he was laughing his head off.

I remember thinking "NIGGA IT WASN'T THAT FUNNY"

Lol.

He doesn't need PR that badly that he needs to damage his public reputation even more just to sell a few records.

Anyone who thinks this is about kicking up controversy to sell some records is 100% wrong.

This is someone spiraling out of control because he is not taking right steps (medicine, treatment, etc) to deal with their bipolar disorder.

its so dismissive and ignorant
but you know how our culture is with the topic of mental health

a medical professional once told me Kanyes mother was the one that could identify and tell him to take X or Y pill because of how he was currently acting. well, Kim aint doing that.

i think he has this rush of megalomania and creative inspiration that makes him put together an album in a week or two, start building homeless space bubbles, run for president, coordinate designs for his clothing line, re-engage twitter, etc all around the same time.

i dont know if thats a byproduct of the disorder...

...or the behavior being constantly encouraged and reinforced by everyone watching and being entertained by it.

he generates more attention/discussion from the controversy than the actual music nowadays. so he has to keep one upping himself and doing something more abnormal and audacious in order to get that same high.

Kanye announces he is running for President on July 4, 2020... Album release - July 24, 2020

Coincidence? I think not

It’s definitely tied to his projects dropping. Maybe it’s because he goes off his meds to finish the albums but these episodes always tend to happen right before the project drops.

It’s cheap exposure but it works every time. They were talking about it on the radio on my way to work this morning.

Free/cheap publicity.

I also think the timing of this always coincides with his album releases which leaves me skeptical.

I’m just not willing to blame all his shit on mental health issues because I think he’s always been a pretty shallow person who has chased fame for half his life.

Kanye is in a really fucking sad place right now. I suffer from mental health issues. I medicate, meditate and mediate daily. I get it, I don't like the stigma in US culture, I don't like it in the black community. That prevented me from being honest with myself and getting on the task of fixing my unhappiness.

My suggestion is not that his outlandish behavior is done to bring attention to an album. I'm suggesting that his outlandish behavior signifies an album coming.

When I saw the tweet about the album I thought "...sounds about right" and went about my business.

All of the conclusions yall are coming to after "he's likely having a manic episode" shows a real lack of understanding of how fucked up mania really is.

I had 2 manic episodes way back. And even with REGULAR therapy and medicine that shaped literally everything I thought for 2-3 years. Then I had to spend another 2-3 years trying to get my memories back from how the mania recontextualized things.

Same thing here, another outburst, but this time it is with his family...So there has to be some truth to it. Maybe he does not want his daughter to get pimped out.

The outburst with Nike and what he was going through and where he wanted to go with it. Look at where he is now with it.

The emotional episodes and constant talk that he was going to be big and make it as a great hip hop artist, constantly talking to people about it, while they ignored him, etc.

The emotional outburst regarding Taylor Swift not deserving the award over Beyoncé ...crazy, but was he lying?

I just think he is a guy who does not know how to form he thoughts correctly or express himself correctly. Like the Harriet T. statement, he just shouted it out, and people took it as him saying Harriet didn’t actually do it. What he was trying to say was that the slaves were not really freed, they just went from being on the plantation to another form of forced or bias labor in the sense of the prison system and working in industrialism for pennies on the dollar, still being lynched, Jim Crow laws, etc. ...thus, his statement of”going from one group of white people to another group of white people”.

He just lacks the ability to thoroughly speak on his topics, and he just goes off on a rant or tantrum.

You can’t really say he is liar. So I do think there is some truth regarding his wife and kids and the Kardashian’s family.

It’s kind of like Micheal Jackson. He had a innocent child perception of things, so that is the way he expressed himself : hanging out with kids, never never land, all the Peter Pan and Mickey mouse shit, coming to court in his PJs. All that shit was used against him later in life, and Mike was projected a psycho, a weirdo, etc. All because of his mental makeup and how he was raised.

We are seeing similar things with Kanye. And just like Michael. He has strange people foreign people , and business people around him.

2. Kanye is anti-black and misogynistic

3. Kanye’s anti blackness and misogyny is not a result of his mental illness.

4. Correlating those things is dangerous to people with mental illness.

She has an instagram page, tic toc, twitter, facebook stuff. There are a lot of entertainers, who will not let people take photos of their kids, but the exposure of this little girl is highly questionable....

But that's with all the Kardashians, so you know where it is headed. She is going to be the next generation, as well as Kourt's daughter.

With the Kardashians legal clout and ability, Kanye is in a really bad, bad situation as far as his kids go.

I will never forget that family interview they had, and Kim was talking about being on the phone with her mother and friends regarding plans for the kids, and Kanye yelled out..." I want to be on the conference call, too.' ...with great seriousness.

Out all those Kids, North West is a hot commodity....sad as fuck. This is why I think Kanye is so dead set on her as a subject.

are Kardashians.

I got to say, as much as I hate the Kardashians and everything they stand for, I can't blame them at all for Kanye's turn. In fact, I believe the idea that Kim has been trying to mitigate his pro-Trump stances.

This has always been Kanye's natural course, Kim or no Kim.

The difference is he has a chemical imbalance mentally, so the realization may not have been there, or it comes differently for him.

He practically built the kardashians as we know them now, being seen as trendsetters, being a listers in the high fashion world, Kendell getting the big modeling opportunities and changing Kim's entire look.

So from a creative aspect, he has a lot on control and ability, but from
personality stand point, I think he is highly impressionable and is at a loss.

He needs a handler, like his mother, etc.

Before Kanye, they were reality show celebrities. They were not invited in the high fashion world. Kim wasn't getting vogue opportunities, or meeting with Anne Wintour.

They were cheesy reality stars. Reggie Bush cleaned up Kim's image after that ray j stuff, and Kanye changed her style to be less cheesy and more fashion and refined.....Kim was on that being the special guess at clubs to boost up sales, drinks, etc....She was making a lot of her money from being a socialite and reality shows, and all that crazy shit that family was going through with Bruce Jenner, etc. They were not high society at all.

Kanye opened the door for the kardashians into the A lister world of fashion, hip hop, etc. Kim wasn't WORLDWIDE. Kanye made that happen.

Kendall Jenner is a shit ass model, and is not respected in the model world. Because a lot of models feel that she gets her runway opps, etc, because of Kanye's connections, and the fact that she never had to work hard to get her opps like they did, and her disrespect towards them.

Kanye was already big in fashion, music, and entertainment in general.

Hell there are several articles on it. ...This isn't anything new

https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/kanye-west-completely-changed-the-kardashian-jenner-family-according-to-fans.html/

Harper or Kanye changed kim in to a high fashion trendsetter!

https://www.harpersbazaar.com.au/fashion/kim-kardashians-post-kanye-style-evolution-9229

Without Kanye, that family would have continued to be a cheesy ass fashion line, reality tv, socialite family. Yeah, they had money before Kanye, but they didn't have A class celebrity. People in Europe didn't care about the focking kardashians, no matter who it was...

GO LOOK AT THAT FAMILIES STYLE PRE-KANYE

Kim is the Kardashians ...no one gives fock about the rest of them.

Kanye turned Kim into a REAL global brand, by having her ditch marketing and publishing of her family.

2) DITCHING THE FAMILY PUBLICIST

Back in September, again acting on West's advice, Kim fired her longtime publicist, Jill Fritzo, and signed on with Slate PR co-founder Ina Treciokas. West reportedly advised Kim to break away from the family fame machine (that she's basically fueled, no offense Khloe/Kourtney/Kris) to focus on creating her own team. We'd be sad about the end of the era, but based on the nature of recent Kardashian press, maybe it is time to move on.

So with the image and style change, he changed her business foundation.

https://www.bustle.com/articles/7980-5-ways-kanye-west-changed-kim-kardashian

come on dude.

I wouldn't be surprised if all this shit is over creative control of HIS FAMILY from Kris.

>maybe hes hacked but could anyone really tell the difference?

I wish Kanye would lay low, work on himself, figure out his family thing, and work on his businesses and passion projects if there's any time left after that. And lawd please: stay away from the horrible attention he creates for himself with these public whatevers.

I try to ignore him but I also worry that I'm gonna look up and regret how he dies..kinda like the way I see MJ and Prince's deaths. MJ was kinda out of the mix. Prince at least had some recent songs and the Chappelle skit but still, it wasn't right. I just don't know.

Musically, I can watch the Through the Wire video right now and still smile because he wanted it so bad and I wanted him to 'make it' almost as bad. Then Slow Jams hit me like a ton of bricks too. And all of those badass songs he made for like a decade..he had a run. And College Dropout might be the Street Fighter 3 Parry moment of my adult life musically. But now? I don't know if he will ever have the energy around him to complete a great thought again. He has obviously been a big benefactor of environments and he's never been 'talented' enough to survive without it. Sometimes, zigging against a zag by itself isn't enough to get to the right place musically. To me, he got over with that (regular guy rap vs super pimp gangster mack mob rich characters in the early 2000s) and now he can't stop going back to that well.

Do you understand how much he actually owns and is worth?

He will get checks for the rest of his life off his masters of His music company good music....and the masters of his artists on good music. And all other royalties from stuff that he wrote, produced and arranged throughout the music industry. Good music is valued at 100 million. Him and Jay are the only artist billionaires in hip hop.

His Yeezy brand is valued at 3 billion, with an insane royalty and creative control deal with the gap and adidas

And his real estate properties, livestock, etc and then there are financial instruments that he owns, such as stock in apple, Tesla, and Nike

This isn’t just some entertainer worth a couple of mil

He owns shit and shit of others.....This man definitely has some generational wealth and will not be broke in this lifetime. He is not a dumb jock or artist.

I know you dislike him...but let’s not say stupid shit.

hes still signed to def jam under a typical vanity imprint deal. he was bitching about royalties/money from them not too long ago.

he was bitching about a reported $3 mil owed to him from tidal. so apparently his paperwork game wasnt solid there either.

hes not the financial wizard you think he is.

hes not a billionaire in terms of liquidity. his net worth overwhelmingly comes from the estimated value of his stake in yeezy/adidas. thats what really took off for him.

if the yeezy sales ever go south due his antics...and the gap deal underperforms or prematurely falls apart...then yes...he could go broke. especially if hes self funding lavish fruitless ventures/investments like yeezy homeless space domes.

not saying its likely...but its not outside the realm of possibility.

All business people say they are in debt so they don’t have to spend their money. It’s no different than trump’s business’ filing for bankruptcy.

They don’t have businesses in their name. Those business are incorporated, so if YEEZY the brand were to go bankrupt or file for bankruptcy, it wouldn’t be Kanye himself going bankrupt. Same thing goes for Good Music

Forbes list all of his assets, properties ,real estate, businesses, etc....the dude can eat forever on his music royalties alone. Songwriter royalties, producer royalties ,mechanical royalties, etc.

Kanye West is a global billion dollar BRAND... he is eating forever as well as his kids.

Adidas
Gap
Good Music
Real Estate Company
Stock Investments.
Donda
3 percent tidal stake

Future companies.:

Yeezy Homes ( first home already constructed)
Yeezy automobiles ( collaboration with Tesla)!

Please research, all of you. That would be nice.

No.. he won’t. He’s a different type of rich.

Edit: he will rally tweet that he’s broke 10 years from now.. right before an album release. But dude ain’t going broke.. maybe rich people broke like 50 Cent to protect his money from a lawsuit but he will still be rich.

In response to Reply # 0

Yeezy Brand makes up 1.3 billion dollars of West's fortune.

Good Music is valued at 100 million.

West owns 21 million in real estate.
3.8 million car collection.
297,000 in live stock.

In 2019, he was the highest paid person in Hip Hop
Jay Z was the second highest
Drake was the third highest

https://www.businessinsider.com/kanye-west-net-worth-yeezy-spending-real-estate-photos.

Kim has a Value of 900 million dollars, with KKW being worth 1 billions after selling 20 percent of her company. Forbes also disputes the billion dollar fortune claim...I can only go off reports.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/maddieberg/2020/06/29/kim-kardashian-is-selling-a-stake-in-her-cosmetics-firm-to-coty-for-200-million/#1e1e7a651500

So collectively, as a family, they have n estimated net worth of 4-5 billion dollars.

With his ability to broker deals, get the right publicists, managers, agents, lawyers, etc, I just hope he is well protected. He seems to always have that going for him, because no matter what emotional shit is going own, that dude stays building his brand. ...I just don't want to see another michael jackson situation...

I will stay rooting for this guy, and just hope there is someone or family in his corner to keep him emotional protected.

more than some acute instance of something happening (i dont know if thats what glc meant). and hes just getting it off his chest.

dude is going *hard* at kim and kriss tho. thats a pretty significant escalation from his past episodes. its interesting because it feels crazy...but hes basically reaffirming what most people have already been saying about that family.

kim possibly cheating on him with meek or attempting to (and maybe more men) is a new wrinkle tho.

oddly enough...i found this gossip site article from a few months ago.

I hate to admit it but once he started adding Kris in the mix I did think “Hmmm. Now THIS might be for the new season of the KUWTK show since it isn’t as popular as it once was”.

That North abortion stuff for sure isn’t part of that but all this Calmye/fuck Kris/Kim is cheating on me stuff? Maybe?

What do you think?

talk about running for President and people were like "f*ck that guy, he is a dummy and ain't sh*t", and so many people were like, "he must be smart and doing something right because he is a billionaire"?

You see that "Kanye is rich" is a large part of a lot of people's defense of the nonsense he is talking.

its really bugging me. especially when i see pictures of this innocent lil girl smiling just enjoying her life.

im just thinking about if that was one of my nieces and her father was acting like that.

youre supposed to be protecting that child and keeping her out of the headlines and disassociated from dysfunctional shit like this. using her as your pro-life mascot and to slut shame your wife is borderline evil imo.

i know dude aint in his right frame of mind right now but this shit is making me wish the worst for him.

Not that I wish that on her but jesus with parents like she has and a Grandma who is always thinking about her next business deal it is almost a forgone conclusion that you are gonna have a tough time as an adult.

Hopefully she surprises us all and becomes a doctor lol.

the entire clan getting dramatic face/body altering surgeries to basically hide how they really look shows some deep dark problems.

i think even the grandmom mj or whatever got work done on her grill.

most healthy families are proud of their signature features. they even joke about which elders/ancestors they got their nose, forehead, eye color, etc from.

the fact that your *whole* family wakes up and essentially tries their best not to look like members of your family says a lot.

imagine a kid being raised in an environment with those type of deep seeded identity issues. how do you even love yourself or what you came from?

Exactly. He is a human being just like you and me. Money or celebrity does not change that.

He was always erratic and reactionary from the very beginning, so I don’t simply label him as crazy.

But I tell you one thing it is something about that Kardashian family where the men comi out on the down side in the end.

From Lamar Odom, to Reggie Bush, to Kanye ....that Kris dude from the Nets. This shit is a pattern. Kanye wasn’t perfect, not by a long shot, but he wasn’t on this level.

Kim has a point about how much our "compassion" for mental health issues is in the abstract. On an individual level, we tend to judge people by moral standards that are "ableist" to some extent.

Like in this thread, someone shared the opinion that Kanye's misogyny isn't the result of his mental illness. There may be an argument there, but I find it interesting that we would seek to put aspects of one's personality outside the influence of their mental illness, for presumably moral reasons. We can't really *know* what a non-bipolar Kanye would be like, can we?

However, a majoryly complicating factor with Kanye is his platform and political statements. I think people are walking a difficult tightrope between having compassion for a person's mental health issues on one hand, vs. needing to object to Kanye's crazier stances due to the influence he has.

A white woman mental health advocate was defending him and she didn't want to discuss his racism and it seemed like a convenient tool for racism.

The same would apply for misogyny (and I wondered if she would still be defending him if the topic at hand were his misogyny).

It's complicated.

2. Advocating for mental health

And she also gets to signal to Gap & Addidas that there investments are safe and it's part of his genius.

There wasn't any upside for her to come out critical of him.

Give that PR team a bonus!!

And what it is implying. This is why it is important to have BLOOD family in your corner.
Saying all this stuff about him having a mental disorder, and what people with mental disorder go through, etc. It just puts that perception out there.

She would have been better saying “ At this time , I ask for privacy and respect regarding family matters that my husband and I are dealing with. Thank you for your support as fans, friends and associates. “. Short and to the point.

A comment like that points no fingers, nor does it subliminally darken one’s image. She’s making herself to be the victim due to Kanye’s actions with her statements.

All he has are in laws and entertainment people coming to see him....Losing his mother was a huge , huge loss.

Yeah she is the beauty and he is the big bad Monster. You need to cancel yourself.

And portraying Kim as the innocent strong one with her history and her family’s history.

This is the very shit I’m talking about, like you want this dude to lose the empire that he built off of hard work and intelligence ...while she literally slutted her way to celebrity via a sex tape with no Talent.

Talking about you find it odd like you know anything about business ...YEEZY is ITS own brand with 100 percent creative control. It’s not that Jordan brand bullshit...just a name on something but owned by Nike.

Kanye owns himself and his shit.

This is a site for crusty nerds who aged out of popular culture, but can't quit this site out of habit and sentimentality for this site's past glory (I'm not excluded). This feels like my dad bragging about one of his old people FB posts being liked 'over 20 times!!!'

In response to Reply # 0

When People magazine says they have a source it basically feels like they are really talking directly to the Kardashians, just like with TMZ...

When Kanye tweeted and then deleted that tweet about him trying to get a divorce for a year I just figured he was talking shit, especially since Kim didn't address that in her statement.

BUT now that People has this up it makes me think they are laying the groundwork for it actually happening:

Seriously, why do you hate him so much?

You say he is going to be broke in ten years, and this and that..like these odd generalizations. I just believe in stating facts.

I don’t like everything that he does, and he hasn’t made good music in quite some time , but I support my own. And he has done a ton of good in this world. Plus I’m from Chicago, and I know his complete upbringing as well as his circle. So my support is going to be natural.

May that divorce be quick and swift, and let Kim leach on another black man for success.

Get out, and continue to build your empire. Go focus on rebuilding the GAP and getting your own fashion factory. Maybe even reconnect with John Monopoly and Don C, get back with some true family from Chicago who know you. Reconnect with Mos and Talib, 88 keys, get back to the beats.

Dame Dash flew out to see him.....

Let’s get ready for the growth...college dropout, late registration, graduation ....Masters. Make it happen.

I'm liking this. Those were the people who got him to the platform that he is on

John was his manager up until 2009, so he was pushing Kanye since the days when labels like Jive, Arista didn't want to have anything to do with him.

194. "We Don't Need a New Kanye West Album Right Now (swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

"But while much of Kanye West’s life has been made public through his ambitions, successes and even failures, his ongoing battle with the peaks of mania and the lows of depression shouldn’t be celebrated as a spectacle or shamed as an inferiority. We don’t need a new Kanye West album right now. Instead, we need to hope that Kanye seeks the proper guidance through professional help. He doesn’t owe the world another great work but his illness is getting in the way of allowing him to do so. Back in 2016 Kanye tweeted, “I cannot be on meds and make Watch the Throne or Dark Fantasy level music.” He owes it to himself to try. "

https://hypebeast.com/?post=5099109

Kanye West doesn’t want you to think he suffers from bipolar disorder. He thrives because of it. It’s his self-proclaimed superpower. It’s used in a candid statement scrawled on an album cover and worn as a badge of honor. But that depiction, while powerful and optimistic, is only a half-truth. There are plenty of things to lambast Kanye West for, but his mental health issues shouldn’t be among them. It’s not a marketing ploy for his next album. It’s not a platform to legitimize his presidential candidacy. It’s a cause for alarm and a cry for help.

We don’t need a new album from Kanye West right now. We also don’t need to follow his ongoing manic episode destabilizing through our social media feeds. But it’s there. Sure, that “Shia Is Cap” tweet is an instant classic in the lexicon of great Kanye tweets, but there’s also the dark side to his sporadic tweets. His confrontational, paranoid statements aimed at mother-in-law Kris Jenner and wife Kim Kardashian West after they attempted to intervene were widely ridiculed but they were still retweeted hundreds of thousands of times before he deleted them. Hopefully somewhere down the line, Kanye can laugh with his family about the eldest Jenner’s “Kris Jong-Un” nickname. The issue here is that we’re all watching the crisis from afar through the cognitive dissonance of a computer screen, the infinite scrolling of a Twitter timeline and through headlines (including ones on this website).

Fans and critics alike often dismiss these “ramping ups” as Kanye being Kanye, but this latest episode was different. The severity prompted Kim to open up about her husband’s mental illness in a way that she hasn’t before. “We as a society talk about giving grace to the issue of mental health as a whole, however we should also give grace to the individuals who are living with it in times when they need it the most,” she wrote in a statement for her 182 million Instagram followers.

We Don't Need a New Kanye West Album Right Now Gods Country DONDA Bipolar Disorder Mental Health Awareness Illness Depression Anxiety Twitter Rant Kim Kardashian Jenner Family President Donald Trump Election TMZ South Carolina

Gotham/Gc Images/Getty Images

If you’ve been watching Kanye West in 2020, then you’ve seen him struggle. Kanye announced his 2020 presidential campaign under the newly formed Birthday Party. He’s pivoted from being a fervent supporter of Donald Trump to criticizing the current president in an acappella freestyle over the phone with Forbes after the publication confirmed his billionaire status. Kanye announced a 10-year partnership with Gap for an extended YEEZY line. Somewhere in Wyoming, he’s developing prototypes of his YZY shelters, sustainable houses for the homeless meant to transform America’s architectural approach and income inequality. On top of all of those ongoing projects, Kanye promised a brand new album — his second straight nonsecular release, initially called God’s Country but currently named after his late mother, DONDA.

With someone as supremely talented as Kanye West, it’s hard to see where the ambition ends and the mania begins. He can declare himself a genius and present a long list of accomplishments in multiple fields to back those claims up. His lifelong fans will readily do that, too.

Both fans of Kanye and those in the media are often quick to lend their understanding to displays of depression and anxiety in the public sphere. Celebrities are applauded for their openness about these struggles, and they should be. In these spaces, mental health days are often an accepted and encouraged part of a progressive work environment to combat stress. But the next tier of serious mental illnesses like bipolar disorder are often met with ignorance and prejudice. How many times has Kanye been labeled crazy?

Millennials and Generation Zers are often lauded for their acceptance and open-mindedness. But many have neither the mental health vocabulary to properly address what Kanye is going through nor the empathy to step back from the spectacle and humanize his struggle. The terms manic and bipolar are often substituted for crazy, psycho or even conflated with schizophrenia, all of which stigmatize those illnesses. Studies point to an overall lack of access to mental health resources as the main root of the current multi-generational mental health crisis in the United States.

There are sustained moments when bipolar’s manic qualities elevate one’s energy to addicting levels. Racing thoughts usher in new ideas and every moment of faux-enlightenment only furthers one’s delusions of grandeur. Synapses spark in the brain at such a rapid-fire pace that these periods of prolonged excitement — deemed as inspiration by the person in the throes of mania — dissolve when they can’t calm down. To much of the outside world, people diagnosed with bipolar who display manic symptoms talk at a speed too rapid to be coherent, and invoke topics that are seemingly disconnected and nonsensical. Kanye described the feeling in David Letterman’s 2019 Netflix series My Next Guest Needs No Introduction. “I feel a heightened connection with the universe when I’m ramping up.”

Kanye’s decision to refuse medication is a poor one. Losing control during mania is a near-certainty when the disorder is not combatted through some combination of mood stabilizers, anticonvulsants and antipsychotics, the latter of which already come with a strong stigma attached. What’s disconcerting is watching his crisis play out in real time and seeing the way it defines bipolar disorder in the collective consciousness. That speaks to how, for every prolonged manic episode, there is an extended depressive spell to follow. For every action there is a reaction.

Kanye revealing his psychiatric hold at UCLA’s medical center back in 2016 served as the first introduction for many to the illness, even though a reported 2.5 percent of United States residents are actively living with bipolar disorder. Kanye doesn’t owe the mental health community his advocacy nor does he have the privilege to work through mania and depression in private because of his celebrity. Every erratic tweet and carelessly uniformed off-the-cuff statement during a presidential rally hurts those attempting to open up about their own internal battle.

His diagnosis doesn’t absolve him of criticism either. It is possible to show Kanye West grace during his open struggle with his mental health, while also not cutting him slack for his troubling and contradictory beliefs. Kanye’s rhetoric regarding race and politics is far too wide-ranging to attribute solely to his bipolar disorder.

These quotes are often ignorant and uninformed. His anti-abortion and anti-vaccination stances are reprehensible and lack proper tact and thoughtfulness. For someone who is such a renowned collaborator and spirited curator, his inability to listen to experts outside of his artistic endeavors speaks to his isolation and the company he currently keeps in his inner-circle. Is there nobody close to Kanye able to question his personal philosophy, political leanings or approach to mental health before he goes public and reaps untold damage to his legacy and those who have actually dedicated their life’s work in these fields?

We Don't Need a New Kanye West Album Right Now Gods Country DONDA Bipolar Disorder Mental Health Awareness Illness Depression Anxiety Twitter Rant Kim Kardashian Jenner Family President Donald Trump Election TMZ South Carolina

Drew Angerer/Getty Images

It’s hard to imagine how Kanye West went from announcing, “George Bush doesn’t care about Black people,” during a 2005 Hurricane Katrina relief benefit to being one of Donald Trump’s biggest public advocates a decade later. “I just love Trump. That’s my boy,” West revealed during a 2018 TMZ Live segment. “So many rappers love Trump, but then he get into office, and now they don’t love him. Trump is one of rap’s favorite people.”

Donald Trump is not one of rap’s favorite people. He’s rightfully criticized for policies that disproportionately harm the Black community and has openly advocated racist ideologies for decades. In all likelihood, Trump has since dethroned Ronald Reagan as hip-hop’s go-to political figure to ridicule, upending decades of Reagan lyrical references in the past four years alone. Some of the current President’s greatest hits include spearheading the movement demanding for the first Black President’s birth certificate in an effort to question Barack Obama’s status as an American citizen; his “both sides” remarks following the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia legitimized white supremacists; He and his father were sued by the Department of Justice in 1973 for refusing to rent out apartments to African Americans. He called to bring back the death penalty for the Central Park Five in full-page ads throughout New York City newspapers and refuses to apologize even after the five Black and Hispanic teens were exonerated decades later.

West attributed his bond with Trump to their shared “dragon energy.” That same TMZ Live visit resulted in Kanye reducing slavery to being a choice. “When you hear about slavery for 400 years — for 400 years? That sounds like a choice. Like, you were there for 400 years and it’s all you are?” After plenty of pushback, West recanted and amended his thoughts in a separate statement to say, “we were mentally enslaved.” He echoed a similar mindset during his South Carolina presidential campaign rally earlier in July where he proclaimed, “Harriet Tubman never actually freed the slaves, she just had the slaves go work for other white people.” Kanye won’t appear on the state’s ballot after missing multiple deadlines.

Kanye openly recognizes that his support of Trump is contrarian. “That is a form of racism and white supremacy and white control to say that all Black people need to be Democrat and to assume that me running is me splitting the vote,” he told Forbes. Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden essentially confirmed Kanye’s accusations.

Kanye then turned around and donated $2 million USD to various Black Lives Matter causes, paying for George Floyd’s daughter’s college tuition and marching with protesters in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois. While oftentimes antithetical, his intent has always been pure and almost childishly optimistic. Kanye wants his music to heal. He wants his YZY shelters to solve the problem of homelessness. He wants his YEEZY footwear line to bring sustainable manufacturing to the United States and create jobs. But he wants to do these things through a vision that is solely his while also not taking the proper precautions to heal himself first.

Outside of the context of his bipolar disorder, it’s easy to copy and paste pull-quotes and call West and his aspirations crazy, but doing so doesn’t provide the full picture. To understand Kanye the artist, you have to understand Kanye the person and the medical diagnosis that he struggles with.

During a particular segment of his South Carolina rally, Kanye’s pain resonated throughout the building. “My dad wanted to abort me. My mom saved my life… “ West yelled through tears. “I almost killed my daughter … She stood up, and she protected that child.” He then brainstormed on how to give parents $1 million USD to support their newborns. These traumas need to be worked out through the privacy of therapy with a mental health professional, but as is often the case with mania, his “ramping up” won’t allow him to consider that in the moment.

Kanye is still processing the pain from the untimely loss of his mother who died in 2007 from complications due to her cosmetic surgery. Her death has long-since informed his stance on the importance of family and even the abortion policy, but fails to recognize anyone’s struggles outside of his own. He went from crate-digging obscure soul samples to relentlessly researching James Turrell installations and George Condo’s contemporary art. Kanye’s openness at a time when hip-hop’s toxic masculinity went unchecked and even his courage to open up about his self-esteem were some of the main reasons why his music was so beloved and has been so influential for nearly two decades. It’s unfortunate that Kanye doesn’t research social justice issues and political policies in that same way.

But while much of Kanye West’s life has been made public through his ambitions, successes and even failures, his ongoing battle with the peaks of mania and the lows of depression shouldn’t be celebrated as a spectacle or shamed as an inferiority.
