"Progressives on the rise as Jamaal Bowman officially defeats Eliot Engel"

https://www.huffingtonpost.ca/entry/bowman-defeats-engel-new-york-democratic-primaries-2020_n_5ef22705c5b663ecc8544563?ri18n=true&ncid=engmodushpmg00000004

This was a decisive victory for Jamaal and for candidates unabashadely supporting Medicare for All, tuition-free public college, a Green New Deal and racial equity. It's not getting much media attention but the NY, Virginia and recent Texas primaries have seen real progressive strength. Mondaire Jones won in NY https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-congress-jones/mondaire-jones-openly-gay-and-black-gets-democratic-nod-for-u-s-house-seat-idUSKCN24F2ZD AOC blew out her challenger and Charles Booker got extremely close in Kentucky. The biggest upcoming progessive races to watch are Rashida Tlaib in Michigan, Cori Bush in Missouri, Paula Jean Swearengin in W.V. Jen Perelman against DWS in Florida and imo the crown jewel would be Shahid Buttar taking out Pelosi in California.

now its back to celebrating close losses in senate primaries and a partial handful of wins in already blue district primaries on par with past election cycles...and zero mention of winning in purple areas where you need to actually build coalitions to get elected.

plus you got a progressive senator in ma (the author of the green new deal) about to get knocked off by a centrist kennedy...further diminishing their statewide electoral presence.

just as many qanon supporters on the republican side have knocked off incumbents as progressives on the dem side. should let you know how the revolution/movement/etc is going.

I see they ignored my replies, genuinely celebrating these guys winning.

Okps aren’t the Democratic establishment (the boogie man), most of us here are ecstatic that more Black and Brown ppl are going to Congress.

It’s just that this post and some of the replies are so clearly looking to say, fuck y’all see our guys can win and tear down ur fuddy duddy party ( reaction ain’t even American, fucking bot lol)

These guys winning or coming close shouldn’t even be a point of contention but “progressives” are still salty as hell and it reeks from the ones on this board.

Then you have ole boy (legs) who just replies to every single post and tries to get every single post popping becuz he would obviously die with these message boards lol

believe in love, prepare urself for love, remove the negativity from ur life, and accept the love u kno u deserve

Which explains the overreaction to Jamaal. They continue to look for a catalyst moment ... that just isn’t there. Or isn’t what they think it means.

Maybe in the future.

I used to think I could escape the saltiness from them on Twitter ( it is absolute pollution over there). But nope.

i guess the other 75% of democrats are really wealthy and privileged centrist republicans?

kinda weird how a small minority of zealots still tries to pretend theyre the majority even after being roundly rejected by the majority.

for echoing the sentiments of the majority of the democratic party and not adopting the fringe politics that clearly didnt appeal to the majority of the party.

I think a lot of these fringe politics aren’t looking so crazy anymore.

Massive unemployment, people camping out in front of UE agencies, Trump trying to kill Obamacare, defund the police getting traction...

I think even tho the masses are afraid to admit it they actually want a lot of these fringe policies enacted because capitalism isn’t working.

I know Ritchie Torres had some issues but I’m glad that homophobe in that race didn’t win Diaz or whatever his name is

Sad that berniecrats/bros are still playing us vs them using these victories to rehash their hurt feelings over Bernie losing badly

mind you...he hasnt signed on to any legislation or made any actual policy decisions that prove/disprove his commitment to a progressive vision. its for the sin of simply being a democrat endorsing the democratic nominee as an alternative to the prez/party that brought us a catastrophic pandemic response, a recession/depression and a slide toward fascism.

>but your tone with what you believe he will do is

ok then name some 'black progressives' who have gotten elected and not done that. what i listed is literally the standard shit people do when they become more concerned with actually governing (aka reality) than firing up their twitter followers.

remember when yall thought aoc was gonna storm the capitol building and be a thorn in the side of the democratic establishment?

then she started calling pelosi her mama bear, admitted how unrealistic passing medicare for all is, and told brogressives their failures are a result of not appealing to voters and building a coalition?

reality bites dont it?

But if you think Bowman is in lock-step with Joe Biden and will just fall in line with the Pelosi/Schumer wing -- then you have no idea who Jamaal Bowman is.

I couldn't be more excited for Bowman and the Progressive movement.

(actual Progressives) to win in November - which is why he's elevated both Bernie & AOC within his campaign and has not only welcomed them to his table - but has asked them for their help (because he wisely knows he needs it).

And I actually agree - Bowman and AOC aren't just simply "anti-establishment" candidates - they are builders of a new consensus/establishment. They aren't just here to tear things down - but have actual substantive plans to rebuild a new foundation and political ethos that enlarges the tent and wins the war of ideas to create a more inclusive body politic capable of championing progressive policies - even though they've been met with resistance at every turn from old-guard stalwarts like yourself.

Bowman won on a mandate to serve as a counter-balance to the old-guard Establishment - and that's exactly what he will work to do (it's what he was elected to do, after all, by toppling one of the most stagnant members of Congress within the old-guard (Engel)).

I guess these cats want Bowman to get assimilated into another Steny Hoyer? God bless them.

The good thing is that most in politics just ride the wave of political expediency. Soon enough Progressivism will be the wave that drives the Democratic Party - so they'll fall in line and then act like they loved Bernie, AOC & Bowman from the jump.

Are still flailing about becuz Bernie lost badly and waiting to go ham in any post to sooth their hurt feelings.

Can you imagine how much of a distraction having a Democratic socialist at the top of the ticket would be right now. Trump would have a full array of attack lines that would actually stick. Trumps attacks against Biden just don’t land and thus we are in the position we are in now *knocks on wood*

The democrat party by in large made the right choice for this moment. Bernie included.

These sad idiots like vex and MP whatever want to keep fighting their made up civil war and not realizing their heroes are about coalition and big tent and are happy to work with centrists for the common (left leaning) good

At this point it's actually a testament to how effective Bernie has been that they feel the need to obsess about him like this. They are so salty that he sparked this new wave of progressivism that has empowered the likes of Bowman, AOC, Omar & many others.

The obsession with trying to convince us that Bernie has failed is really just an insecurity being exposed because they know he has actually succeeded in winning the war of ideas within the Democratic Party - as an outsider at that.

and I'd likely peddle the same line if my preferred candidates were Hillary & Biden - each beneficiaries of a tilted and grossly biased primary process (though a process I'm sure you'll again champion as wholly fair and impartial).

But sure - Sanders lost those two primaries, yet made a gigantic imprint on the body politic. Not bad for somebody who was polling at <1% against the Clinton behemoth and then became a viable challenger that nobody in the party saw coming (precisely because of how out of sync the party bubble is with where the actual people are).

Funny how nobody talks about the ideas of HRC or Joey Biden or how they've influenced a next generational wave of Democratic politics.

Because they haven't. They are mentioned as standard-bearers of yesteryear (a failed era of American governance). Whereas Sanders represents the future.

The entire 2020 Dem Primary field largely endorsed the 2016 Sanders platform - en masse. Prior to the 2016 Dem Primary, nobody in presidential politics was talking about Health Care as a Human Right, Climate Change as an existential crisis, Economic/Social/Racial/Environmental justice as a moral imperative, Palestinian dignity, Foreign Policy reformation etc....

The only reason these are now standard fare in mainstream Democratic politics is because of the Progressive movement Sanders spearheaded in 2015, and now AOC, Bowman, Omar, Tlaib, Khanna etc.. have carried out through 2020 and beyond.

No other figure in the Democratic Party has had more influence on policy or grassroots movements in the party over the past 5 years than a guy who wasn't even a member of their party.

>and biden cakewalked through
>the democratic primary by being the alternative to bernie

Biden "cakewalked"? That's what you call getting blown out in the first 3 contests? Lol yikes. Only reason your boy got the nod is because Amy, Pete, and the entire party apparatus panicked after Nevada and desperately coalesced around the worst candidate in the primary just to stop a Sanders nomination.

Look at this country and where it’s headed. Look at people begging for another stimulus and being scared af when shit runs out at the end of July.

3 trillion spent and where did it go?

Not sure why these folks think Bernie hasn’t had a major impact on our politics and our views.

Politics is slow but I think the progressive rise has been pretty fast all things considered.

The lack of real ROI on our tax dollars is becoming so glaringly clear now - as well as the fragility of our institutions and how we've squandered the opportunity to invest in the social contract and human dignity.

Sanders spearheaded the effort to institute the $600 federal PUA/week that expires at the end of the month. Meanwhile, the standard bearers have been more interested in bailing out Wall Street and monopolies.

Progressivism is clearly on the rise - and we're also seeing the end of the Clintonian era of neoliberalism that has dominated Democratic political ops for decades. It's a natural progression into a new wave of generational politics.

Yet again - people are referring to fringe personalities on Twitter as if that represents Progressivism. Yet the leaders of Progressivism are clear in their adoration for Lewis. Lewis has been a hero to Progressives for decades, and you can't find one Progressive politician who hasn't been mourning and paying wonderful tribute to his legacy.

We need more people. Bowman's a DSA member with the sort of traction in his district to do this a long, long time.

Sanders was a chance to jump this movement decades forward, but honestly - candidates like Bowman were always plan A for socialists who believe in electoralism or people like me who are too lazy and scared to indulge the alternative. We're never going to get big donor cash because that comes from rich people. We're never going to have huge think tanks act as policy factories because, well, the exact same reason.

So it's one district, one candidate at a time, and Jamaal Bowman seems like a good one.

If he has a prominent role in the next admin then this is a legit concern.

From my understanding, he will only be one of the many speakers at the DNC.

I see him as a card we can play in a crucial swing state. A voice to speak to former trump supporters.

Maybe thats idealistic. I'll come back and eat my wordsif so.

Yeah, I mean the only thing he's missing is that he's not a troop. Though I think the amount of pleasure that the Democrat donor class would get from a former office-holding Republican apostate who was also a troop would be so sublimely erotic that Kasich would object to it. Or we would just stare in rapt, paralyzed pleasure, face twisted into a horrifying rictus at the elegance of the political triangulation that we wouldn't even show up to vote. He's the Infinite Jest of Democrat spokespeople.

>oh look it's the rational midwestern hetero anglo male!
>welcome back to the fold, my brother

The only reason I don't hate this very accurate sentiment is that there's no way we're going to have normal politics ever again. It's not like fascism gets voted out peacefully and then the country just ... heals itself. So maybe it doesn't matter who speaks at the Democratic Convention because they're not the ones who are going to fix this. I mean, it would be nice if they'd help. But house Democrats just split to defeat Ilhan Omar's pretty tepid amendment resolving to develop a plan to exiting Iraq. They may not get fully boned up by the machines of imperialism and fascism as Republicans, but they've already proven under Obama that they're not just going to voluntarily disassemble them.

Max Rose's compact, jaw-forward profile they would get a full on tactical camo-boner. A cosplay eye-patch might throw the old guard into throes of ecstasy.

Speaking of fascism I haven't seen any convincing outrage on the left at homeland security goon squads being set loose in our leftist hellholes yet, other than AOC introducing a bill requiring them to first tell you what agency they are members of before they throw you into a (I guess freshly) marked van. I bet it's Barr that's behind the jackbootism, but the fact that you have a loose conglomarate of mayors as the loudest voice against a pretty frightening development just shows how complacent the party will remain as long as Trump's ratings decline by themselves.

We'd just wrapped up a tedious week of The Discourse with a general agreement that Free Speech was good, probably, and that the collection of tenured doofuses and Times columnists* need to be protected at all costs against the creeping illiberalism of somebody writing "Wari Beiss" in response to a shitty argument.

Then we had honest-to-God explicit fascism. The uniquely American sort that you can only have with a DHS head named "Chad Wolf" featuring dangerous secret police black-bagging protesters, but without the panache of 30's Italy.

Faced with actual humans risking actual danger to make their argument in public, I think the miserable, diapered babies that signed the Harper's letter pretty much slunk away in shame. The good news is that it proves that they can experience shame, but the bad news is that everybody seems just really embarrassed to have indulged such a water-thin definition of the word "free" by our (apparent) intellectual betters that nobody was really up for revisiting the topic in a more serious sense.

Like watching Omen III and then going back and watching Omen.

And mayors ... aren't really great at that, it seems. By the nature of their job and the way our local/state/federal governments are nested, it really seems like most mayors feel a pretty strong obligation to bow down to capital. That move itself isn't itself fascism, but it does mean you're never going to close the shutters on fascism. They don't want secret police actually scooping people up off the street, but I think they'd also be pretty resistant to dismantling the legal mechanisms by which that happens in the first place. Gotta have the option.

*Chomsky's cool. He's wrong about this, but he's shown he actually cars about Free Speech and not the non-existent right to not be yelled at on twitter.

I'm looking at the names. Some I'm not surprised at, like Wynton Marsalis. He probably just wants a free pass to shame and demonize Hip Hop culture. Salman Rushdie, still under yellow-alert Fatwa would have a better grasp at what 'illiberalism' is, but I can understand his sensitivity.

But Bari Weiss and her dramatic escape from the scary-woke *gulp* New York Times would have you believe the forced introspection of Cancel Culture is the new book-burning, and that intraoffice communications indicating she was kind of unpopular meant she was *this* close to being spirited away to some newly built Guantanamo of the Left. Think of the struggles people had to go through to break the 'illiberalism' of Jim Crow, you fucking baby. Nobody is going to arrest you for your safe, daddy-pleasing "But what will the Right think?" obsequiousness.

Local politics beholden to capital ALWAYS has a poison pill for vulnerable working communities, communities usually of color. Whether it's a real aspirational drive for those politicians or merely a justification for policing or pricing an unwanted population out of existence, any obligation to capital is a huge obstacle to social justice.

Exactly! Free speech arguments are about power, and for the longest time the people actually *fighting* for it understood that their speech, the best of it, intended to confront political, cultural, economic power. And that this confrontation called for violence and, moreover,LOSS because that's what happens when you confront power.

Protesters across the country understand this as well. And less acutely, so does every working person who can be fired for saying the wrong thing or even looking the wrong way. Every person who signed that letter, and I'll include Chomsky on this one, hasn't sufficiently examined who they're confronting and who they're protecting.

And now, delightfully, they're being publicly humiliated about it by actual free speech heroes who understand that their speech means they're in a fight. And because the marketplace of ideas has *always* been a cover for people want to be heard but don't want anything at stake, academics and columnists don't understand that fights have winners and losers.

>Local politics beholden to capital ALWAYS has a poison pill

Nicely stated. Seems like this dawned on you a lot earlier than it did for me. It took the disjunction between the conventional wisdom about which public officials were doing a good job with COVID and which ones weren't for me to see that the almost-exclusive standard for being a successful mayor is pretty well written into the job description: bring business to the city.

It's difficult to push somebody who doesn't even understand the idea of success and failure for a city the same way.

Democratic voters have a pretty well-refined taste for dead Iraqis, putting people in jail for drugs, and giving credit card companies right of prima nocta over newly married cardholders. Biden has a half-century track record of unwavering support for these business-friendly policies, and the people of Michigan rewarded him for it.

I didn't even say I disliked Kasich, but dude still toes party lines if you watch him perform as the sensible republican on CNN. He has very clear lines he will not cross, so I can't trust him outside of, yes, bringing in his demographic.

You talk about that strategy as if it's not glaringly obvious. Doesn't change the fact that I'm thoroughly disappointed in how toothless the left has been in combating abuse of power by all the Republican power players.

Also, I wasn't addressing you, if I did I would have adjusted my tone to find a common ground. I was replying to Walleye, who is a known lefty / socialist. I don't get between 'yalls' posts so just don't respond to me with that 'no disrespect' bullshit.

this is the new gender wars lol.

but on kasich...heres the thing...

all he is doing is coming to endorse joe biden (then will most likely campaign for him in ohio). he isnt influencing the party platform.

*i* personally think hes a dickhead (like most republicans...moderate or otherwise).

but hes still popular in ohio. just as popular with ohio *democrats* as he is with republicans.

more popular than joe biden there.

in what world is it not a good idea to brandish an endorsement from an ex governor who is popular with *your* (potential) voters and also capitalize on the performative aspect of a high profile republican voting against trump?

sounds like an entire win to me.

is what I'm skeptical about.

This party I can see too eager to sacrifice the real progressive vision of its young stars to hold up a weak, temporary compromise with this new crop of 'sane Republicans' that have been hiding under their desks from the nuclear fallout of this presidency.

They can hitch a ride but I don't want them anywhere near the wheel. That means in the backseat with a mailed in endorsement, not a front seat with any control of the road ahead.

kasich can reach more people (in ohio and across the country) in a nationally televised speech than he can doing ads and stump speeches in ohio.

the dem convention gets more viewers than nba finals games (and more additional post-broadcast attention from broader news coverage).

hes just gonna give a folksy speech about their relationship working together (like expanding healthcare access in ohio) and endorse him over trump.

im not even sure if we are gonna get full speeches from everyone (or how they will be allocated) with a virtual convention.

i think most of the people who are making a big deal about this just really started paying attention to politics after 2016 (im one of those folks too).

for some reason people dont realize that republican never trumpers like kasich and the lincoln project dudes are an important part of why dems will have 2 senators after 2 straight election cycles in az, dem governors in kentucky and kansas, and dems potentially winning the prez/senate *and* running the state house in tx after losing by 9 points just 4 years ago.

its not all about just getting more progressive in already blue coastal districts.

are suppose to care about. Very entertaining stuff.

What I think about is that Trump STILL has 49% of white people's support despite it all. The country is still 3/4 White.

That tells me that when Dems aren't running against the worst president ever who presided over a collapsing economy and Pandemic, we are going to have a hard time.

I think Trump is done, but what happens when a smarter, more disciplined Candidate runs?

I am worried about Tom Cotton, Ivanka running in 4 and cleaning up.

You need people who like Tom Kasich(sp) to vote Democratic. Don't see how you get around it.

The replies from the centrist "mainstream media would never lie to me" brigade in this post once again demonstrate the core problem and disconnect. They see politics as a sport, get our guys over the line by any means necessary, but to what end? To what end? Yes, I understand getting Trump out, but what then? That's what progressivism is about, is actually getting policies enacted that help regular people. Neither party has enough members that want to do that, that's why we have to grow the bench with people like Bowman, case in point:

https://twitter.com/ProudSocialist/status/1285663099954102277?s=20

BREAKING: House vote to cut the Pentagon by just 10% failed 93-324.

Democrats control the House, yet 60% of them voted against making a small cut to our nation’s war budget.

The military-industrial complex STILL controls both corrupt political parties.

Thread https://twitter.com/Elazul/status/1285667479969239049

Reminder;

This is 10% that the Pentagon itself said it doesn't want or need.

This is 10% of the 100% going into the control of "The most dangerous and corrupt president ever".

And they rejected it

If you see nothing wrong with this, something is absolutely 100% wrong with YOU

Where is the resistance? The House Democrats can't even symbolically vote for something they know has no chance in the Senate.

I think what progressive's like yourself miss when discussing agenda and issues is that there is more than whether you are for it or against it.

The easiest example is Bernie. Progressives saw it as either you are for Bernie's platform and policies or you are against them. But for people like me, I considered the very practical question of whether he could win or not. And if I didn't think he could win, then the discussion of his platform is purely theoretical.

So yeah there is a sports like element because you have to be able to win to implement any policy. But my criticism of the left is they seem more concerned with being right than actually being in the position to get shit done (i.e., winning).

Just holding the line or more likely going backwards isn't winning for progressives because it belies the definition of progress. Winning would be no more dead, innocent children in Yemen, no more homelessness, no more abject poverty etc. It's all just a matter of priorities.

Plus, Bernie would have for sure won in 2016 and in 2020 in the General, but that's a moot point now.

see post #144, apparently not

I'm sure the will of the people during an unprecedented pandemic is to keep bombing children in Yemen instead of giving 10% of that unneeded military money to social programs, education and health care. Maybe it's a problem that the media won't frame it that way, won't report on it and won't care. Give that issue the full media cycle for one day and I think you might be surprised at the will of the people. Rinse. Repeat.

the GOP is brazenly ruining Americans' lives, while a center-left democratic congress would maintain a similar status quo while doing just enough to differentiate themselves. crumbs from the table.

establishment democrats either embrace that latter idea, or just work to play congress-seat defense without any strong ideals (democratic slogan = not as bad as republicans). progressives run on policy change, but I agree there isn't the electoral math to enact it (and the left's cannibalism is real; watch AOC be tied to a stake next).

there's a sports analogy below, and I'll offer mine: democrats are trying to win the Super Bowl playing defense and running the ball. but they have no imagination. progressives have a spread offense and are trying to score long touchdowns every play, but their defense isn't as strong. so they have to overcome half their own team *and* the opposition. which doesn't win the Super Bowl either.

with beating old ass Bernie? So much so that they panicked and had to organize all hands on deck to propel the weakest candidate in the primary (Biden) just to prevent a Bernie nomination?

And you think "everyone is focused on beating Trump"?

lol nah fam - the Dems were primarily worried about keeping their status quo intact --- and *then* if they can beat Trump, great, but that ain't been their first priority for two cycles now -- otherwise we would never even have a Donald Trump presidency.

But keep caping for these dinos. Hope it works out for you.

yes. right now...currently...in the present...

bernie opponents were focused on beating bernie. in the past. months ago. in the primary. thats how primaries work.

past and present. not a hard concept to grasp.

and im honestly surprised to see you still living in the alternate reality where the primary candidate who got beat out in virtually every demographic but the ones that turnout the least...barely got 25% of the votes...couldnt win a single county in places like michigan and florida...and got roundly rejected by the backbone of the democratic party (black voters)...somehow is supposed to be the stronger candidate for the general.

time to let it go and come join us in the current space time continuum vex.

Again - Bernie won:
-Latinx vote
-Arab-American vote
-Asian-American vote
-Native American vote
-Black vote under 30
-All voters under 35
-LGBQTI vote

or as Reeq likes to say "the negligible vote that doesn't turn out so fuck them"

But sure - take credit for the Conservative Dem Clyburn vote if that makes you feel better.

so its not like the rest of the candidates took away almost half of his delegate count from 2016. shit there were more candidates eating into bidens base if anything.

its just that most of bernies lost support overwhelmingly went to biden.

hence bernie losing like 85% of the counties he won in 2016 and biden easily cakewalking through the primary while vastly outperforming the amount of money he raised/spent and the amount of time he campaigned in most states.

Had the field remained in the race after S.C. - we would've seen a more widely distributed field of delegates - but the decision was made to back Biden.

And again - we've never had a candidate become the nominee after losing the first 3 state primaries/caucuses. And he didn't just lose, but lost them badly. Interesting that you refer to that as "cakewalk win". Biden was broke, performing horribly, and losing badly until SC saved his bacon -- and then the decision was made to keep him afloat as it was clear he wasn't going to beat Bernie unless he got a lot of help from the party - as Jamaal Bowman correctly pointed out last night.

Because it's the best way to see progressive policies have a chance at reality, I know you get that. Your blue no matter who candidates that get elected have proven an infinite amount of times that they stand against that happening, see post #140 for one example.

Her, I’m very excited and it’s a major moment as the young progressive vs older establishment equation comes to the CBC

*this is why ppl find y’all insufferable. Don’t know shit about shit and tryna throw the baby out with bath water. No one is as basic to say all “new progressives=bad, unelectable” but unfortunately y’all are basic enough to think any Democrat in office more than 4 years is the evil wizard

I hope u actually vote

nobody said progressives cant win. thats a straw man you cooked up to argue with yourself over and win lol.

ive said (and it hasnt changed) that progressives are largely just winning primaries against other democrats in already blue districts. i did it right at the top of this post and it still remains true here.

https://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=4&topic_id=13393963&mesg_id=13393963&page=#13394013

i literally told yall exactly what yall would do...and yall are doing it lol.

thats the opposite of a 180 fam.

if just winning a primary in a completely safe district is what you define as a 'win' then cool. but those are pretty low standards.

wheres the winning in a purple area where you dont just count solely on the liberal democratic base to pull you to victory? where are progressives knocking off *republicans* in competitive districts?

the things that actually change the electoral map and get you congressional majorities and net your party more power. not just cannibalizing your own party.

the tea party wave was knocking off democratic reps/senators/governors in swing races. where is this progressive wave (that you refer to) doing the same?

If Cori Bush posted on here anonymously you'd be calling her a Bernie Bro. She's for everything Bernie is for and one of his staunchest supporters ever since 2015 so how does that circle get squared.

https://twitter.com/mehdirhasan/status/1291022557039255552

All those people who spent years saying Bernie Sanders was somehow uniquely bad on race and gender should ask why he was the *only* member of Congress to endorse Cori Bush, a black woman, and Black Lives Matter activist, who won her insurgent Congressional primary race last night

You know - the candidate you swore would perform better than Booker against McConnell - thus you thought she was the "stronger" candidate?

Latest polls show her getting destroyed by double digits.

Is that the "astute analysis" you're self-congratulating yourself for?

were paved by the foundation Bernie set 5 years ago. Justice Democrats & Brand New Congress (which were the engines behind the Squad wins, and now Bowman/Bush and others) were started because they were inspired by Bernie's campaign - and took the challenge to carry the baton forward with a new generation of Progressives.

And they all love Bernie. Which presumably makes some of these moderate fanboys up here so upset that they just can't stop talking about him.

We'll be in 2028 and these cats will be like "But Bernie lost!" as the entire Democratic Party shifts and is transformed.

yall have never heard of younger candidates replacing older incumbents since the beginning of politics?

seriously...why do yall only view things through a binary establishment/moderate vs progressive lens.

when younger moderate senate candidate joe kennedy unseats older progressive incumbent ed markey in ma...whats the narrative then? moderate wave takes out establishment progressive?

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Markey is edging ahead in recent polls - but it's a close race and could go either way.

But speaking of binary, restrictive thining - it's telling that you think generational change only happens because of young people. Throughout this nation's history, there have been genuine intersectional movements (including young and old people working together) to catalyze change.

Warren & Sanders were two of the oldest candidates in the Dem primary - and were also the ones fighting the hardest to ensure generational change and progressive values.

why do you constantly invent positions that people dont actually take? lol. its an odd habit.

>I wouldn't be so sure about that. Markey is edging ahead in
>recent polls - but it's a close race and could go either way.

im just saying. what would would your hypothetical conclusion be if kennedy wins?

>But speaking of binary, restrictive thining - it's telling
>that you think generational change only happens because of
>young people. Throughout this nation's history, there have
>been genuine intersectional movements (including young and old
>people working together) to catalyze change.
>
>Warren & Sanders were two of the oldest candidates in the Dem
>primary - and were also the ones fighting the hardest to
>ensure generational change and progressive values.

except i didnt actually say generational change only happens because *of* young people. once again you put words in my mouth. its really strange. especially when its in response to something that you *just* read and should easily comprehend instead of extracting your preferred straw man from it.

generational change is a literal term. change from one generation to the other. doesnt mean only members of one generation are solely the impetus for it.

ronald reagan was the oldest president ever elected. he ushered in a generational change (including reagan democrats) across the entire map (something bernie/'progressives' still fail to do btw).

younger generations have been inspired/incited by dead historical figures lol.

doesnt matter who starts it...supports it...or leads it. it becomes generational change when theres turnover from the previous generation to the next.

Power protects power - and the rules/objectives always change depending on who holds the torch. It's funny, the DCCC cried, complained and threatened progressive primary challengers to Dem incumbents, yet went right ahead and said nothing about a myriad of dem primary challengers to AOC - and are outright championing Kennedy's primary challenge to Markey,

Funny how that works.

They think progressive = Bernie STILL.

Pretty odd for a "not me US" movement...its always about him to them.

Reminds me of Hill fans trying to give her credit for anything they remotely can and keep a straight face.

These progressive wins are fantastic. They are. How they don't get that one district doesn't represent the entire party...even after how the primary just went down...is beyond me.

How do they not get there is a huge difference after Bernie got his ass handed to him?

And...it also shows that Bernie was the wrong progressive candidate to get behind.

I've been out...have they admitted that trying to dunk on Warren in MA while ignoring SC was a mistake yet?

Have they copped to the youth movement not being as big as they said?

How about this...are older black voters still the establishment boogie man?

How about Vex...he still repeating Trumpisms on COVID so he can feel better about being demanded he be entertained by a predominantly black sport?

I mean...I see anyone who doesn't immediately credit Bernie for anything progressive must be a centrist shrill still...so I'm wondering how little has changed.

Same old left-field Stadiq weird/bad takes - especially the COVID/NBA one lol - that was at least creative.

But not surprisingly - you were wrong (yet again) on the NBA being able to safely and responsibly resume play. Silver and the League deserve tremendous credit for what they're accomplishing during a global pandemic with rising social unrest: They've both resumed play and posited social justice issues as a priority.

Sorry that your crying and fear-mongering about COVID stopping the re-start didn't come true. Better luck next year?

Last night Cori Bush, Rashida Tlaib and Jamaal Bowman joined Bernie for a Progressives are on the Move livestream. Here's Jamaal saying

"Bernie, if the Democratic establishment didn't gang up on you and jump you, you would have been the nominee for the Democratic Party.

You out-raised everyone.

They had to jump you in order to beat you. So I just want to say that."

https://twitter.com/People4Bernie/status/1291170395903553536?s=20

So there's that. I know it's pointless arguing with you guys but again it isn't about Bernie, it's about POLICY and the progressive movement for POLICY that Bernie started but that these new candidates will hopefully finish, that's why Cori Bush's pinned Tweet is "Not Me, Us" with almost 200k likes.

They should give themselves more credit; I can’t speak to Bowman or Rashida Tlaib’s district but I lived in St. Louis for 6 years and am still very connected to the Black community there and I can assure you Bernie’s endorsement of Cori Bush had zero to do with her win

But like u said, y’all are so off ur rockers it’s pointless at this point, but thanks for exposing that for y’all, this still *is* all about Bernie Sanders and reclaiming some pride after y’all supporting him and his epic fail.

And again, I guess the Black voters in SC are the “party establishment”. Just like the idiot above described Clyburn as a conservative dem Smdh. As much as y’all want to take the power of Black voters out of this conversation, they are ones who gave Biden his boost to the nom.

Anyway, back to Trudeau, the head of YOUR government, thoughts?

I posted the original message before all this stuff came out about Shahid. I haven't read all the details, I've seen a bit from both sides but it looks like it's gotten so messy that him winning is probably a write off now either way. Looks like Paula Jean Swearengin and Jen Perelman are the last two chances to add to the Squad this year.

I feel pretty strongly that professors shouldn't fuck students at their university, even if the student doesn't take a class with the professor. But I can understand why a large university with a big adjunct pool doesn't embrace that requirement. It would be difficult to enforce *because* the relationship between an adjunct and a random student at the same university doesn't really have much content to it, let alone a necessary power dynamic.

This thing started with kind of murky allegations, which seems reasonable and actually responsible in a way as a story develops. But then nothing really materialized, including anybody - even anonymous - who could be concretely identified as a victim. Now there's leaked chats showing this was a nearly Wohl-ian smear job.

It really sucks. I don't care about Morse, though Neal is reliably terrible so Morse has that going for him. But I think the people who called this as a homophobic hit were correct.

https://theintercept.com/2020/08/12/alex-morse-college-democrats-chats/

COLLEGE DEMOCRAT CHATS REVEAL YEAR-OLD PLAN TO ENGINEER AND LEAK ALEX MORSE ACCUSATIONS

“This will sink his campaign,” predicted a College Democrat leader hoping to work for Rep. Richard Neal.

Ryan Grim, Daniel Boguslaw
August 12 2020, 6:55 p.m

THE LEADERSHIP OF the University of Massachusetts Amherst College Democrats began discussing an operation they believed could sink the campaign of Alex Morse for Congress as far back as last October, a plan they then helped engineer and which came to fruition on Friday, after the College Democrats sent a letter regarding Morse to the Daily Collegian, the school’s student newspaper.

The letter, sent three weeks before his primary challenge to Rep. Richard Neal, informed Morse that he was no longer welcome at College Democratic events, alleging he used such opportunities to socialize with students and later connect with them on social media in ways that made them feel uncomfortable. Message logs obtained by the Intercept — both from leaders of the College Democrats UMass Amherst chapter group as well as chats one of them had with Morse — shed new light on how this purported scandal was deployed. As a condition of obtaining the logs, The Intercept agreed to publish some of the chats and paraphrase others.

On Wednesday, following a statement by Morse, the statewide College Democrats chapter clarified that he had in fact only attended a single event during the course of his campaign. It was after that event in October 2019 that the leadership of the UMass Amherst chapter began to talk about leaking a story damaging to Morse, according to those online communications.

Timothy Ennis, the chief strategist for the UMass Amherst College Democrats, admitted in the chats that he was a “Neal Stan” and said he felt conflicted about involving the chapter of the College Democrats in a future attack on Morse. “But I need a job,” concluded Ennis. “Neal will give me an internship.” At the time, Ennis was president of the chapter, a post he held from April 2019 to April 2020, when he was term-limited out.

Leaders of the College Democrats group went beyond merely plans to leak. They also explicitly discussed how they could find Morse’s dating profiles and then lead him into saying something incriminating that would then damage his campaign.

That effort appears to have failed to generate the material they hoped for, but the group’s leaders did believe they held damning evidence they contemplated leaking: Instagram messages between Morse and Andrew Abramson, who in April became president of the organization. Ultimately, the College Democrats did not release any chats or any other specific claims against Morse, opting instead to level broader charges that he behaved inappropriately. Morse, who was an adjunct professor at UMass Amherst until the fall of 2019, has acknowledged having consensual relationships with students but has said that he has never had an inappropriate relationship with a student of his, and no such allegations have been made.

On October 5, Morse attended a College Democrats event at a local community college. Neal also appeared, and was introduced by Ennis, who was at the time enrolled in a journalism class Neal taught at UMass Amherst. Neal later told Ennis he was impressed by the event, Ennis claimed in the chats. Morse sat on a panel with Abramson. After the event, Morse reached out to Abramson on Instagram to say it was a pleasure meeting. (The two had previously matched on Tinder, Ennis said in the chats, but had never met up. To match on Tinder means both parties must swipe in the same direction in order to begin a conversation.)

“Thank you! Good to see you too,” Abramson said.

“How’s the rest of your weekend?” asked Morse.

“Pretty good I went home last night to surprise my mom for her birthday hbu?” Abramson said .

“Aw that’s nice. How was that? I had an event to go to last night to speak, then had a wine tasting at a friends house. Now I’m in North Adams to march in a parade,” Morse replied.

Abramson shared a screenshot of the exchange with friends. “Not overt but it’s very clear he’s not talking to me for no reason,” he said. “Like read that message. Also don’t mind me totally leading him on.” He added that he accepted the message request “because why not.”

“This will sink his campaign,” Ennis said, calling it part of a pattern of Morse dating students. That conversation with Abramson appears to be connected to the charge that underlies the College Democrats’ statement against Morse, when they said that Morse “sought out students that he met at our events privately on social media, in a manner widely understood by our generation to indicate intimacy.”

After Ennis concluded the chats with Abramson would sink Morse’s campaign, the conversation between Morse and Abramson continued for another several weeks.

During that same time period, Ennis was a student in Neal’s “The Politician and The Journalist” class at UMass Amherst, and had been open with other members of the College Democrats about hoping to land a job with Neal, The Intercept reported Tuesday. Ennis, in the chats, quipped that perhaps he should leak the information by including it in a paper for Neal’s class.

Also last fall, Ennis was driving through New Hampshire with Clare Sheedy, a fellow College Democrat, as both were campaigning for Pete Buttigieg. “He spoke very highly of Mr. Neal,” Sheedy told The Intercept. “What he said to me was he wanted Neal to be his ‘in’ to politics and work his way up from there.”

Sheedy asked what he thought of Morse, and Ennis told him he is known for dating students and had recently matched on a dating app, Tinder, with a fellow College Democrat, and chatted with him via Instagram.

In a statement to MassLive on Monday, Neal spokesperson Kate Norton denied any collaboration between the Neal campaign and the student group, adding that the Neal campaign “commends these courageous students.” The College Democrats also responded to allegations of cooperation with the Neal campaign on Sunday, writing on Twitter, “To suggest that our decision to send the letter to Mayor Morse was a quid pro quo with Rep. Neal, his campaign, or anyone else is untrue, disingenuous, and harmful.”

Asked about Ennis and Abramson, Norton reiterated her earlier statement, but added: “The young men you are asking about have no involvement with the Neal campaign.”

In the chats, Ennis also floated the possibility of leaking allegations against Morse to Politico, and, indeed, in June, the College Democrats did so, pitching the story to Alex Thompson, a political reporter at the outlet. Thompson reached out to the Morse campaign as part of his reporting, though ultimately did not run the story until months later, after the college paper ran it.

After receiving the inquiry, Morse said he reached back out to Abramson — the only student Morse had communicated with after a College Democrats event during his campaign. Morse said he apologized if his outreach had made the chapter president uncomfortable, and Abramson blocked him.

Ennis said in the chats that he had learned from people who had graduated previously that Morse was on Tinder, sharing a screenshot of a profile from the year before. The profile is standard, dating-app fare, and does not include Morse’s title as mayor of the nearby town of Holyoke, a position he’s had since he was 22, nor does it mention his time as an adjunct at UMass, which ended last fall.

Ennis said in the chats that Morse had never matched with him or messaged him, but discussed an effort to find him and match.

IN A STATEMENT that followed its initial letter, the College Democrats wrote, “The letter was written at the direct request of those affected by Mayor Morse’s behavior, and those individuals were involved in the writing process. The stories included in our letter are their stories. They have not spoken out individually about their personal experiences because they wish to remain anonymous.”

The implication that the letter was the collective work of the members of the chapter is false, however. It was written by leadership without input from the members, according to messages provided to The Intercept from the organization’s GroupMe chat. The day after the Daily Collegian published the letter, a member of leadership sent the following message: “Hello everyone. I’m sure some of you saw the article about Alex Morse and letter udems and other orgs sent to his campaign. I’m sure many of you are confused and even disappointed. If anybody needs support or wants to talk about it the udems eboard is here for you.”

A follow-up post included a link to the story. Five days later, specific allegations have yet to surface.

Abramson declined to comment, and neither Ennis nor the College Democrats responded to requests for comment. Daniel Marans of HuffPost contacted the College Democrats for further comment on Wednesday to ask whether or not their letter was motivated by Ennis’s or anyone else’s political ambitions, posting their response on Twitter.

The student group denied Ennis’s professional ambitions played a role in the crafting of the strategy. Marans also asked if Morse had indeed declined a request to fund the organization, as the mayor had told The Intercept on Tuesday. The organization offered HuffPost a selectively edited email regarding a donation from the Morse campaign, quoting the campaign as saying it would “get back to us shortly.” A copy of the full email was provided to The Intercept. It reads: “Hi Hayley — will get back to you shortly on sponsorship. We’ve been committing a great deal to COVID related organizations and want to make sure we honor those activities first. Sorry for delay.”

People really need to stop with the perfectly timed sexual misconduct/assault allegation bombshell right before an election.

saw someone on twitter say something that got me thinking.

a lot of white 'progressive' orgs and online personalities race in to take credit for a lot of these black/brown candidates being victorious.

but what if these folks are just candidates in diverse districts that want politicians more representative of them (age, ethnicity, etc)?

why isnt this 'progressive wave' ushering in young dynamic white insurgents too?

y'all are way too pressed.

For once it'd be nice if you just congratulated young progressive wins without all this posturing.

The Progressive movement hinges off a core set of principles - which is why you have such a powerful intersectional movement comprised of everyone from a young Black Muslim woman to an old White Jewish man.

At the onset of the Justice Democratic movement, there's been a hard emphasis on recruiting and running women and POC given the disproportional representation of the people in Congress -- particularly in districts like AOC's where you've had old-guard Establishment white men representing predominately Black/Latinx districts.

But don't let your binary mind fool you, the movement ain't about empty symbolism. Anyone can get it if they aren't doing justice for their communities. That's why you had Bush take out an old-guard Congressional Black Caucus stalwart like Lacy Clay in Missouri - while you had Tlaib fending off Brenda Jones in Michigan.

Progressives demand diversified representation - but also are about more than just glossy optics that look good in D&I manuals. This new wave is bound by a core set of principles that spans beyond geography and demography.
