my mom may have went to some community college or technical college but never got a degree.
shit, i think i'm the only person in my biological family to have a college degree right today. even my cousins who are around my age didn't get a degree.
my aunts and uncles were all military or just worked straight out of high school.

Crazy when people have elders who attended the same school.
Wife and I went to VCU and want our kids to go as well but that out of state is insane and NC has some good colleges.

My mom went to college after all the kids were out the house and in college.
She graduated a year before me and then went to U of Chicago for her Masters. That’s where I first heard about this guy named Obama who was lecturing at the University.

They're the absolute best. They do all the reading and come prepared to class like they actually want to be there. They're willing to discuss everything but they don't show up with pre-freighted takes and actually listen to their classmates. Easily the coolest thing about my varied teaching assignments.

Hey! My wife and I may have been there at the same time then. I don't want to pry too much, so obviously feel free to not answer. But what program was she in?

didn't connect the "masters at university of chicago" in my mind until I got to my second comment. it's extraordinarily unlikely that i've ever taught anybody as accomplished it sounds like your mother is. i just like it when people go back to school when they're older.

One thing me and my wife regret was not taking advantage of college. Just only thinking of it as a means to a job. But for me, I didn’t even have the awareness that it COULD be for anything else. I balanced my hours based on how much homework and labs I could do.
And this made me think that if someone in my life had attended college let alone two generations before me, someone to say at any point in my life going into college “I once took a class on .... you should see if they have one”

1st in my entire family w/a bachelors. My older cousin finished her degree late, after I did. And then another younger cousin has since finished. But I was the very first.
Looking back there wasn't much fanfare about this accomplishment lol. But probably rightfully so. The whole fam just expected me to be the one to finally break the mold.
