"ok-fit covid era"

Heres what I do 3-5 x a week (basically every day off I have)

55 pound curl bar for like 6 sets of 15 to equal:

100-120 curls
100-120 triceps curl
100-120 dips/crunches
100 push-ups
3 mile walk

I know a 55 lb bar aint shit for most but its heavy as fuck enough for me lol

How can I get "cut".my arms are bulky but s it the protein diet I need to adhere to?..I mean Ive cut out sugar 75%
but this new coffee place be calling's me like crack called Pookie

and have yall seen that ad for that "pushup board" with the handles? I ordered one lol

Whats yall set up/doing?

Haven't got the rowing ads, just the pushup ones and now forearms bands lol. Because you said youre off next week and gonna go in hard, made me NOT take today off and continue. My days off from work outs are my days I go to work. And yeah, the 55 pounds is just enough to kill me without killing me.

just when you think your cardio is getting somewhere, the rope says do better.

I use to train as a boxer and got up to 4-5 rounds of rope before doing any bag or ring work. can't do but maybe 5-6 spaced out minutes now.

In response to Reply # 4

I started out doing 50x as part of a squat, deadlift, swing, jump rotation. I'm up to 100x or 150x on the rope. It keeps the cardio up for sure. Yesterday I mixed in some rando soccer dribbling drills to do w/my 7 year old. I don't play soccer. LOL. It was kind of a fun new challenge, though, even if my neighbors probably laughed their ass off if they saw me doing it.

I can't just go skip rope for 10 min, though. I never want plantar fasciitis again in my life. Building it up, though.

Between that an barely any restaurants I'm probably down 6 or 7 lbs.

mine came from increased running. its a terrible pain. I didn't know what it was when I first got it and didn't see a doc for a long ass time. by the time it my other foot, I knew and didn't have to see a doc about it since I knew what to do.

I want to jump rope more. I will at some point as it'll help my running.

you're doing pretty well with the weight loss. I lost 10, but recently gained it back by starting to eat sugar again.

30 lb dumbbells - 10 sets of 10 reps/set = 100

pushups in sets of 10/20 up to 100

pullups in sets of 5 up to 50

mapped out a 2-mile (round trip) walk; I picked several equidistant spots so I can mix up the scenery and terrain. Some days I go uphill, some downhill, some flat.

disclaimer: take-out food and copious amounts of scotch is keeping me in balance. LOL

My dumbbell is 20. Maybe need 30 pound as well. CANT do one pull up (yet). My 3 mile walk has the low and high terrain so its a great cardio. I cut down the take out severely and dont miss it. I do wanna drink tho

but they aren't THAT heavy.

they'll get you decent bi-ceps.

I learned the hard way not to do curls and pull-ups in the same session. the muscle cramps were terrible.

It's a mixed bag. I just don't want to GAIN tbh

- Was doing some youtube workouts but fucked up my knee (ongoing injury)
- My friend gave me a treadmill so I try to do a couple miles on there 3-4 times a week
- Going for walks on one of the trails near by or I've gone for a couple short hikes. I need to invest in a good bike

I don't ride often b/c I feel guilty about borrowing a bike from my friend but I can do 12-15 miles even when rusty so imagine if I made it a habit/hobby.

And yes the treadmill is super helpful. Literally no excuse to not knock out some quick cardio.

gained about 15 pounds in the past few months due to a depression episode and work-related stress eating. didn't exercise much during that time. i really let my discipline slip for too long and lost a lot of my muscle gains and conditioning

so to get back on track i'm back to riding at least 70 miles/week on the stationary bike, alternating days of short HIIT sessions and longer rides (15+ mi). did 22 miles in ~80 minutes last week and felt good about it. i'm lifting again to regain the muscle mass i lost. had to drop 10-15 pounds from my curl/shoulder/squat dumbbells and 5-10 for the rest of the upper body stuff like tricep kickouts, raises, shoulder presses, etc. feels really bad but i should be back to 40 lb curls and 25 lb kickouts in no time. i'm also in the market for a weight bench and barbell set if anyone has recommendations they care to share

Is the exercise helping reduce the depression? That biking level is great.. wish I could get to that if I ever get one etc, so how much are you using for weights workout?

exercising doesn't really reduce the depression but it does raise the floor of my mental health. when i'm exercising regularly i'm less prone to depressive episodes and anxiety + panic attacks, generally. i find that life is more manageable when my mind is not constantly wracked with anxious and/or depressive thoughts and exercise helps me maintain a healthy mental state

>That biking level is great.. wish I could get to that if I ever get one

it doesn't take too long to get to the point where you can knock out 10 miles in 35 minutes. i tend to play 2k on ps4 or something on my nintendo switch while i'm riding. focusing on the game helps me ignore the monotony of pedaling and makes the time fly by. i got my schwinn airdyne ad2 with my tax return money last via amazon payments. it's one of the best purchases i've ever made. exercising regularly will help me build and maintain core strength and keep my heart healthy and that should keep me out of the doctor's office and/or hospital

I was in the yoga tip for about a year he years ago or so and I’ve never sweated so much in my life. It’s truly the perfect workout since your using just you and just your own muscle and weight. Geezus I felt tired af but “clean” after each session. It was addicting.

I miss working remotely. Was running 70+ miles a week & feeling good. Had no idea I could do that kind of mileage week in and stay uninjured.

Now that I'm back in the office I feel guilty if I run everyday so mileage is a lot less. Being 38 and married with two kids changes priorities, ha ha. Trying to fit in more speed work and push-ups/pull-ups/planks to make up the difference.

The other day I knocked out a 5:30 mile in the midst of an 11 mile run. Been a long time since I've done something like that!

Reading these posts is inspiring. Y'all are beasts and maintaining consistency can be a bitch. High-five!

I know it takes conditioning and it’s o it a matter of time but my lungs be burnin and calves on fire to get there when I was trying to be a runner

When I get home most days one day I do pullups, curls and tricep dips one day, then pushups and ab work the next day and alternate days. I also have a strider that was given to me recently. I've done it twice. It's a pretty good cardio burn. I can't run outside because I don't have the shoes for it and it would kill my knees. I also have a jump rope, but I've had a hard time being consistent with doing it. My gym has opened back up, but I put another 90 day freeze on my account. I'm just not quite ready to go back right now with things spiking everywhere again. Haven't gained any weight at all, and I'm still lookin pretty good so overall I'm pleased.

and lifting on those same days. I was alternating run/lift days so I could workout almost daily, but I think that was killing my runs.

I don't even run that far. my short run is just over 2 miles. my long one is just over 4. these damn GA hills make it a challenge though.

they've cancelled the Peachtree road race because of La'Rona. I think I might run my own peachtree on Saturday tho. I imagine other folks will be doing the same.

increased my workout bench to 185. was reluctant because there's not spotters at home lol. its been easier than I thought. might get to 200 if I keep on it.

lost 10lbs in April/May. gained 7 back. sugar is the debil.

I lost 150 lbs over around 18 months from 2018 through 2019. Maintained that weight through the beginning of quarantine - had been going to the gym 5 days a week lifting weights. During the first couple months of quarantine I gained 15 lbs though - and now I'm focused on losing that.

I really miss lifting weights. I got the Bowflex adjustable dumbells, but that's just not the same as loading heavy weight on a barbell and doing squats, deadlifts, and presses. Been switching everything up just focusing on staying active. Closed all three rings on my Apple watch for every day of June, and I plan to keep that going. Been playing basketball in my driveway, going for walks, doing HIIT cardio, and just bought a bike to start riding.

On the nutrition side I lost my weight with caloric deficit through strict intermittent fasting - when I was really in a groove I'd only eat during a four hour window or one meal a day. I still do IF, but the easier 16/8 fasting skipping breakfast. I need to cut back on sweets though - got a KitchenAid stand mixer during quarantine after binge watching way too many cooking shows and I've been going nuts baking all kinds of stuff - cheesecake, cookies, homemade soft pretzels, etc...but it's definitely time to lock all that down.

For me 16/8 has always been eating from 12-8. In terms of how many meals, totally up to you. That being said, it still comes down to caloric deficit, and for me IF is just an easier way to stay in a caloric deficit without strictly logging calories. It’s easiest for me to do 16/8 eating two meals a day. But as I mentioned above, back when I was really in the groove I was eating in only a four hour window doing one meal a day. Essentially if I wasn’t hungry at lunch I wouldn’t eat until dinner.

It don't even need to be 8 hrs. Your feeding window can be 4, 6, 10, 12 hrs, etc.

There *might* be a minor benefit to lining meals up with the circadian rhythm. Need more research, but here are 2:

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1550413118302535
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31002478/

At the very least, just go with personal preference and what fits your lifestyle best. 12pm to 8pm is not superior because of it being 12 pm to 8pm. It's all about energy balance.

Super interesting article on the possible benefits of nutrition and the circadian rhythm (chrononutrition) -

Digging out garden beds has my upper body kinda jacked. My "dirt" is 50% dirt, 30% small stones and 20% rocks and bricks. Carrying around bags of soil/manure helps too. Also working on the roof.

I do deads and squats in the basement still.

rdhull, are you trying to gain muscle or lose fat? If it's the latter, try adding in some mild cardio (1/2 to 2 miles jogging).

..to gain any mass. The positive is any muscles I do have pop like crazy, but I'm still a skinny guy with muscles, lol.

If you're a naturally bigger-framed guy them maybe going heavier with the weights will give you more definition.

Salt is another thing that slows metabolism down as well. I had to stop eating ramen when I worked in an office because I literally started to see a pot belly growing on me, and I'm skinny. 2x instant cups a day + sitting in an office chair for a like two weeks was all it took.

Pot belly or none you should definitely cut back some. Those things are loaded with sodium and that can be a silent killer. I'm a naturally skinny guy myself but both of my parents have had blood pressure issues as they've gotten older.

In response to Reply # 0

Weights as low as 20% of 1 rep maximum have been shown to stimulate hypertrophy provided sets are taken to failure/really close to failure. That's like ~60+ reps per set. But...

40% to 80% 1RM are better. So trainees would be looking at 30 reps to failure, 10 to 20 reps to failure.

I hear of people not working out at home because they can't do heavier tension work (sets of 5 to 12 reps) due to not having the equipment/weights. But light weights are just as good as heavier weights in terms of hypertrophy. Strength is a different story.

Maintenance of fitness is doable, too. Volume and frequency can be reduced by 2/3 each in order to maintain fitness level.

In response to Reply # 0

I didn't work out at all during the lockdown and gained 2-3 pounds the first few weeks, but I started cutting again and lost about 5 pounds.

I've been going to the gym ever since the reopening. They're not open 24 hours again yet, but they open early enough at 5:00am, and I'm usually there right at opening or at 5:30am. People are required to wear masks while moving around the gym but can take them off while working at particular spot while distanced. People seem good about wiping down their areas after finishing. First week DOMS were a bitch, but I'm back to feeling somewhat normal after workouts. Taking it easy with a moderate bulk for the first time in a while and just doing 3x5+ for my main lifts. I really hope we can remain open and not have to shut down again.

The best 80 dollars i've spent in a minute.
Cost less than my gym membership...and comes with a very basic and doable meal plan

I've gotten stronger...my lady says i'm definitely more cut..my endurance is up...it's really a lot of fun too.

I'm fortunate to live in good weather all year round..so I do this outside. I don't think I'll be back in a gym for a while...I want to explore calisthenics more. After I've completed this 6 week run..i'm going to do it again with a weighted vest.

i get my lifts in then do cardio at the apartment gym since the Y has a 75 minute limit rn.

- 75 min limit
- 30 ppl max in at a time
- have to wear a mask in but once youre working out you can take it off (so whats the point of wearing it in the first place)
- also have to wipe down bars and dumbbell handles instead of just the bench

And then beyond that there was only so much I could do w/ 145 lbs of weights for compounds and 50 lb dumbbells. I worked out all through quarantine but getting back in the gym, it feels like I sat on my ass all summer.

I work out with my 16 year-old son, so I want to make sure everybody is as safe as possible. However the Y was a little overkill. There were so many precautions in place that it was almost impossible to get a decent workout in.

-Preworkout questionnaire for every visit
-temperature check
-25 member max in main workout area
-6 in free weight/kettlebell area
-50%+ machines taped off for social distancing
-mask police in serious effect

After a few weeks of going to the Y and leaving, barely having worked up a sweat, I switched us to LA Fitness. They have more liberal precautions in place, but not so few that I feel we're unsafe.

Been using the bench set on high to hold the bar for squats, but I'm scared to put too much weight on there.

Gym in the basement is dope for random, impromptu workouts.

The rower is a huge part of my workout, and I don't have one. I'm really missing the running and rowing. I can't run outside because my knees won't let me. Again, it's a debate I'm having with myself and the overall situation going on is a major factor. I do have health concerns that I need to address somehow, and the workout situation my gym provided met all of those needs pre shutdown. I would feel pretty safe going back because it's always been a very clean environment and cleaning protocols have increased, but there's obviously some concern. I have a harder time staying on track left to my own devices. Six months ago I was killin it. For three months I did ok, and the past three have been absolute shit.

joined a new gym, the week before COVID hit hard. Never got to work out. They froze membership fees in March...started taxin again, around June. I’ve just been paying $25/month and not using it. Finally got back. My normal workout time being what it was...I didn’t think I’d encounter many people. Gym opens at 5, I was there waiting. It’s a brand new gym, so it’s clean as fuck, anyway. Hella sanitizing stations. I rocked my mask, did my business and was out by 620, or so. I’ve got a 3 day program set up and I’ll continue to use brisk walking outside as my cardio. I had some kettlebells at home, that I messed around with, but I never really went hard, it felt good to have the iron back in my hands, but fuck am I weak.

I've been on HBP meds since last year. Probably should have been on it sooner. Had a VA exam in April and my top number was in the low 100s...even taking my meds, religiously. It was all a combo of working from home and eating like trash, no exercise, mental strain from everything going on. I met with my doc, did a bunch of bloodwork and he upped my meds (Liprinosil sp?) to 20mg. I started walking 4 miles every morning, using my Fitbit and trying to beat my time everyday. Got my cardio and BP in a real good place. When I went back for a one month checkup he said PLEASE, if you don't do anything else, keep up the walking at a brisk pace...it does wonders for your heart and BP. So...If I can add some lifting back to that and get back to my intermittent fasting, I should be ok.

So I busted my ass, lost a bunch of weight and got in probably the best shape of my life. March hit and the gym closed. I did good for the first three months on my own and then fell almost completely off. I gotta get back to doing something as my bp is still a little high. I also take lisinopril, and a beta blocker. When I was killin it at the gym I wasn't taking any of that. I gotta get back to that point. Thankfully I haven't gained any weight. In fact, I've lost some, but that is due to muscle mass loss.

Down 30 lbs since May.

I've been on this fit wave since about April and really into the jumprope since June. I decided I didn't want to come out of this year with a big weight gain.

Every morning I walk to two coffee shops over about 2-3 hours for the steps and then I do 2 jumprope workouts using 1/2, 1, and 2lb ropes. I really like the way jumprope and walking complement each other.

I love cardio but I've never really liked running. I'm hoping to add swimming into the routine now that Oakland pools are semi-open.

I use the crossrope app so today my 2nd set was:

1lb: 3x90s
1/2lb: 3x60s
2lb: 5x30s

Last week I did a set that ended on 2x300s. It was grueling, lol. My cardio was there but it wears on my knees and ankles.

yup! 3 sets of 1lb at 90 seconds and etc. With 20-30 seconds rest between each set, then rest for 60 seconds between each weight change (1lb to 1/2lb and etc)

I'm down from 209.6lb to around 178lb as of this afternoon. My diet was already decent but I have tried to eat more lean protein and cut down portion sizes. My goal is to maintain a weight between 165-170 with a sustainable routine.

Thats amazing. Im doing weights still and 3 mile walk jogs 3-4 x a week. My arms are yoked but I cant get below 200. Probably because Im doing weights. Im going to add jumprope plan. Shit, not I have to go and by some ropes sets I guess. All these dumbbells around lol. Do you do any weights in your program or is it just the rope cardio walk thing?

No weights yet but I bought a pull-up bar and slowly adding more bodyweight exercises. Would probably invest in a weight set if I had more space in the crib, lol

before getting into the weighted ones. just to give you an idea how your body (knees) respond to jumping. it'll also give you a bit more leg, ankle, and foot strength before adding weighted ropes.

it definitely one of the best exercises for cardio. I need to get back to it.

I would recommend a 1/2lb rope... Gives good "feedback" so you get your rhythm right but also not too heavy.

Also - for those of you in northern cold states who work out in your garage, are you planning on using a heater in the winter?

I'm sure my fitness is shot to hell since it's been months upon months since I've stepped foot inside a gym, but I'm way way way to nervous to want to willingly workout inside a closed indoors environment.

I biked by an outdoors Crossfit spot in Brooklyn a few times now, but I'm certain that is outside my price range. It does look tempting though from the times I've rode by it.
