There are conversations going on about who in our country's history should be commemorated with statues, building names, city/state names, etc.


The reactionary response to removing confederacy stuff is something like "we should take down the Jefferson Memorial too then" or "why don't we rename the state of Washington since George Washington owned slaves", or #cancelYale.

Now some of that is bad faith, right wing trolling (like #cancelYale). But some is genuine.

This one is the worst to me. I thought this was only something that grade school children did, which would be absolutely disgusting, until I was at a meeting for a local chapter of Toastmasters International and they started the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. I was completely baffled.

It had all 50 states in alphabetical order but the words all rhymed? If so, we did that one. To this day, I can run down the list from Alabama to Wyoming.

I'm sure some of that was related to communism, but it's been time to move on. progress needs to happen and that means later for the statues and shit.

we should get rid of the 'honors' for racism and slavery. that doesn't mean the history will be forgotten (if the books are done like they should), but I don't need to see a reminder of slavery when I go to the park or send my child to school.

I want to see how Stone Mountain will be handled. that's a big ass job.

But these people are typically too cowardly to admit to their racism out loud. So when people start ripping statues down, the statue naturally becomes a symbol for their unspoken racism that they suddenly feel obligated to defend.

With the progress of the information age, has come the lifting of the veil regarding this nation's history. Everything's been exposed and- coincidentally or not- these continued 'events' (George Floyd, et al - no disrespect) can ONLY lead to a reformation of the society we grew up in.

Everything's changing and this is part of it. I'm trying to preserve as much of this shxt as I can so if I'm still around I can tell my grandkids 'they usedta call this South Central' cause there's no telling what's next, man.

America has imported more warlord theocracy from Afghanistan than it has exported democracy.

First of all fuck those statues. We had one removed in my hometown of Pittsboro, NC. Google it. As a teen, when I learned what this statue represented, I would simply give it the finger and KIM. Once the fight to remove it happened it rallied the racists in my county as across the southeast. All of a sudden we have mfs from Miss, Arkansas, and other rural NC counties showing in numbers waving confederate flag in front of the old courthouse. Counter protesters show up, yelling back in forth until they get to scrapping. This rallied the sympathizers to erect not one, but 3 large ass confederate flags within the towns limits. Keep in mind its a very small town. One of the flags is erected on private property across from a middle school, the one I attended, the one that was the segregated school my grandfather and great uncles attended, and one name after the enslaved African poet, George Moses Horton. This is what kids had to see leaving and departing school.

So, no I don't support those statues and I want them all to come down, but the trade off is heavy is my hometown. I grew up here and only saw confederate flags on a few pick ups and the replica of the general lee dodge charger from duke of hazzard during thanksgiving parades. Now we have 2 flying high within the towns limits. The one across the school had been taken down. These confederate sympathizers show up every now and then, get into a lil fight,get arrested, and go back to they rusty trailers with their don't tread on me flags in the front yard, and my kids have to see this in 2020 when I didn't see my first confederate flag flying until my late 20's.

it is what it is, so fuck them statues.

Removing statues is just like changing a brand's logo, just cause it has a different image, it doesn't erase it's history at all; the statues and the people, yes it's racist, but so is 99% of anything Europeans has claimed and attached their names to, it doesn't erase the backstory, the owners, why that person was famous, and all the things named after that person.

You can change the name of a street but in the official records it will always have a 1st name before any other names, shit black people still have their slave-owner's last name, so how about we all change our last names, and don't think changing it to an African name will work cause even the continent of Africa and most of it's countries have European names as well.

All of this statue tearing down is nothing but a distraction if you ask me cause the BLM movement still haven't given the gov't or the Supreme Court any agendas or demands they want to see happen within a certain schedule.

I hope they don't think people were out there protesting just to take down union & confederate objects, get some food brand logos changed, and put another white democrat politician in the president seat?
