"Do yall tell your managers how long a task will take?"
Yesterday I told my boss that the task she was asking me was a four hour task and that's going to push back on another deliverable She said it would take 30 minutes. 3.5 working hours later here I am finishing.
I know the expectation of salaried work is round the clock, get everything done, but that's unreasonable.
So I'm curious when everyone level sets expectation and how.

mainly because i was finishing shit quicker than expected and at a higher quality than my peers. so it allowed me a little leeway to ease my day if i was vague about how long shit took
as a manager now i try to be empathetic that most people don't have that capacity.
and sometimes I will see a 4 hour or 2 hour time slot for a webpage update.
That’s just not how this works.
**************** TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

managers have to have one but, the person doing the actual work does not have a full set of requirements...research becomes key. i'm tired of answering to people who have no business being answered to. just want to be done with this project.

press people for a more definitive time or alternately I'll tell them when I need something by. But I won't tell people how long I THINK something should take them, especially if I'm not doing it myself or have never done it.

the most meaningless words to put in a subject line
give me priorities, deadlines, even ask me how soon can i have something but to just give me a list of things to do and say you need it as soon as possible?? ill just carry on to my best discretion.
You literally told her how long it would take you. That should have been the end of the discussion. Not simply disregarding your estimate because it wasn't what they wanted to hear.
If someone asks me when I can have something done, I give them a realistic and reasonable estimate with a bit of padding. Most of the time they dont really care, they just want to know when they can expect it.
It has been a challenge for our team to get other people to understand what our bandwidth is. They would just keep asking and asking. So we started giving estimates to everything and showed them how much we could fit into a given week and how long it would take to get through all their requests. We got 2 new head counts soon after.

I send task reports daily, yesterday the boss said "I don't think this should have taken all day...."
me: *internally bristling* "Huh, really? How long do you think it should take?"
manager: "Welllll...how about we screen share and walk through the work?"
me: "Good idea"
- we start the screen share, I start walking through the process to refine design work for finalization and production. I can hear his eyes rolling back into his head, but I needed him to get how much stupid work is involved with this stuff.
after 15 minutes...
manager: "Oh ok. Yeah, that did take all day. I thought you were just talking about *that little insignificant* thingy on the screen."

Those gifs had me rolling. And I felt it for real. The good news is that it sounds like they need what you do the way you do it so then occasionally set tripping is whatever.
15. "Did she ask why it would take so long?" In response to Reply # 0
Seems like there is a big miscommunication if her estimate is 8X yours. I'd respond with a breakdown of what needs to be done to get the job done and point out the major bottle necks.
20. "No. She downplayed the ask. Which is why I brought it up " In response to Reply # 15
Mainly because she’s really good at having unrealistic asks. To the degree that I’m now communicating to her the degree of her asks. Like it’s one thing if you have a last minute ask that’s 30 min to an hour, that’s work. But when the scope of your ask is half a day and done early or middle of the week, it shifts the entire week by a lot.

They hired you for a reason: that you are good at your job.
If your manager will not believe your estimates there are two reasons: 1)She thinks you are bad at your job 2)She is a bad manager
Now, if she does that just once in a while it could be something you can clear up with coaching, or just by talking it out.
If she does it more often than not then somethings wrong - and in most cases it's her.
If it becomes a pattern then: it can only be resolved by getting a new boss. (Move under someone else - or get a new job.)
This is why I do NOT take salaried positions.
I believe this is a major reason why people drink.
EDIT: For me I tell them how long it could take if it's completely under my control. Everything else is a time range if there are dependencies on other people or vendors.
