"Yvonne Orji: Momma, I Made It on HBO..."

I was already a fan of hers and I loved it. A lot of the “mainstream” comedy folks may not like it but I thought it was great.

>I was already a fan of hers...

I like her but I'm not a fan per se. It's a lot of companies throwing money behind people because of their fan base and not necessarily their stand up ability nowadays.

Comedy is subjective though so I guess all that shit I just said don't mean shit anyway lol

I'mma check it out though.

from Nigeria and other African nations or have them in your family you’ll probably think it’s hilarious.

Started to annoy me quickly.

I get it, for fellow Africans and I’m sure kids of immigrants it felt familiar and they got it, but I started to get the feeling an a non-African and non-immigrant I shoulda be laughing at her not with her and that’s never a good thing.

And that was annoying.

Perhaps “Nigerian accent thing” comes across as ignorant but I didn’t mean it like that, I meant it as her particular Nigerian accent comes across as overly forced and exaggerated for comedic effect AND it just factored into 99.9% of the jokes she told and I got tired of it after a while.

You’re right she is talking about her life experiences and should be allowed to but I’m allowed to also feel like meh as someone watching it as an “outsider” I feel like the way she’s setting these jokes up I’m supposed to be laughing AT her not with her (which I know I already said).

No comedian out there is going to have my exact life story so on some level nearly every joke that is told is one that I am an “outsider” to but really fantastic comedians have a way of taking that joke and making everyone understand it and find humor in it, and Yvonne just didn’t do that for me.

For example, Pryor has a joke about being a drug addict and I don’t have that experience at all but I find humor it in because he’s so skilled at telling jokes, I end up feeling like I’m laughing with him not at him.

Yvonne didn’t do that for me hence me feeling the way I did.

I don’t have any issue with someone using an accent to talk about their immigrant parents. That’s usually part of the joke.

I guess if it’s not funny then it can be viewed as going to the well to often but I never felt bad about laughing at anyone using an accent to imitate their parents views on life.

That’s usually part of the joke.

word? just about every comic with immigrant parents does this. Desus and Mero do a Jamaican and Dominican accent every single episode. maybe you've not been exposed to many Nigerians?

every comic who does a joke about their parents does a voice no matter what the nationality, but especially if their parent is an immigrant.

And actually didn't plan on watching, but my girl came over so...you already know.

I didn't think would enjoy it at all but I had 2 or 3 genuine laughs.

I thought it interesting that she echoed the ages old OKP trope of Black vs black. And she didn't even have to clarify or explain it. She just referred to American blacks as "black" and her people as "Nigerians."

I thought she handled it all quite deftly...she walked the tightrope and equally made fun of all the sides...she didn't try to make it like she was better than or that her culture is better than..and actually firmly placed herself, throughout her storytelling, in American Black culture...she is hella smart

A LOT of my friends have immigrant parents, so I feel at home with and comforted by the perspective. I love the accent play.
I didn't really care for the interviews with her parents though, because it's hard for me to buy them as genuine with a 2-3 camera set up. She also mentioned how many degrees she has more than necessary imo.
I'd recommend it to people looking for laughs

and did everything right. I found it to be fun and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I don't think she's really that funny, though (Issa Rae and Natasha Rothwell are funnier than she is, assuming that their personalities are similar to their characters on ths show).
