Granted, some demonstrations are also against notable brutality events that've happened in those countries as well (eg. France's march also for a victim of police violence there, Adama Traore; and a lot of the signs in the Australian crowd calling for decolonization). But I think being on this side of the Atlantic (or Pacific)... we forget sometimes how much what goes on in North Am - and, specifically, the US - reverberates around the world. The US police brutality issue is approaching Apartheid levels of global condemnation for sure..

Mayor currently weathering a political shit storm because she didn't intervene when it became clear social distancing would be impossible. She cited freedom of assembly and non-escalation after being surprised by the numbers as her reasons, but right wing political opponents/media smell blood in the water and are going for her throat because "public health" (with some dumbass liberals going along).
At the same time, bars and restaurants all over the country reopened, social distancing will barely be enforced and none of these opportunist fucks seem to care that this is a much larger collective risk than one unexpectedly large gathering outside in the sun.
The fact so many people showed up for an anti-racism protest is really awesome though.

Me neither, but I think she's been doing quite alright as mayor, especially considering the scrutiny she's under.
>but this wouldve turned >ugly.
Which was what at least a few of the people currently screaming bloody murder would have *loved* to see. Then they could've both demonized Halsema AND the anti-racist crowd.
I really hope that centre-of-left politicians will have her back in this instead of howling along with the wolves in the forest (pardon my Dutchism).

I definitely would not want her job. She's been a pretty hit & miss as a mayor, but she really stepped up for this one.
Right wing clowns were calling for an end to social distancing no less than two weeks ago and now they want their head. if only their people would remember.
other cities here are following this week. Dutch media and politics are mostly not talking about the racism, but focus on the risk of a second COVID wave. It was beautiful to see everyone come together in solidarity with the Black community in USA tho

I was there and it was pretty impressive. glad we got to show some support or at least stand in solidarity for what's going on in the US.
we have our own issues with institutional and systematic racism, as well as loud and boisterous right wing politicians and their followers running amok.

anywhere else *visualizing* the sheer number of people, globally, protesting in solidarity with black America. I've reposted, but not necessarily endorsing its/their agenda or tactics. Hope that's clear.

I'm happy to see such global solidarity with black America because the obstacles to safety and justice domestically could give the impression black America's on its own in this fight. It's not. That's why I see such strong parallels with the global condemnation of Apartheid in South Africa.
But it's also a reminder of just how expansive and enduring white supremacy has been across the globe. That so many populations can also protest againt similar police brutality against black people in their regions, or other forms of racial violence and oppression, says a lot.
I don't know if the coordination is there for a global uprising, but the sheer scale of these demonstrations def sends a strong message that people (black and non-black alike) are tired of living in societies where institutionalized racism is basically the default.

but I know they have a big problem with police violence against Africans and other immigrants of color.
just hope this doesn’t create a second wave due to all these people being in close proximity.
**************** TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

a *lot* of people seem to be wearing masks when demostrating, tho.. like I'd almost say the moajority seem to be. Which I know isn't fool proof protection, but does reduce chances of transmission a little bit.
Maybe some kind of divine intervention will mysteriously protect everybody bc of how important (and unifying) the cause is lol
edit: and ya, I think people in France are super responsive to what happened to George Floyd in particular bc of similarities between the George Floyd and Adama Traore deaths. Both incidents involved multiple officers and Adama's last words were also "I can't breathe."
