"Rank Denzel, Sam Jackson, Larry Fishburne, Wesley Snipes and Morgan Free..."

I'll go first:

1. Denzel,
2. Larry Fishburne
3. Wesley Snipes
4. Sam Jackson
5. Morgan Freedman

Follow-up Question:

Is there any of these young bol (Michael B Jordan, John Boyega, Chadwick Boseman, Daniel Kaluuya, etc.) who can hang with the old school crowd?

Honorable Mentions to the middle childs Chiwetel Ejiofor and Don Cheadle who I think probably can hang with the old school and have more presence and charisma than the young bols.

Also, I didn't know what to do with Eddie Murphy and Will Smith in this discussion. I think I was only focusing on "serious actors" not entertainers in general.

>1. Denzel,

>4. Sam Jackson
>5. Morgan Freedman

i'd agree with this ranking, but i think it also is the ranking of the order of which i'd like to see in a movie (switch snipes and fish maybe) so that's influencing my ranking too i think

>Is there any of these young bol (Michael B Jordan, John
>Boyega, Chadwick Boseman, Daniel Kaluuya, etc.) who can hang
>with the old school crowd?

i mean, "hang"? naw, but that's cuz they just need more work. of those you mentioned I think Chadwick Boseman is a bum. the rest have potential, and I think Kaluuya is the real deal. one name I didn't see here who has real weight is Mahershala Ali. in fact, he don't even have CLOSE to the resume of anyone in your Top 5 there, but other than Denzel and Snipes, I'd want to see him in something more than any other name in this post.

also, I hope he stops getting typecast as the moody guy, but i think Ashton Sanders has real talent. and someone who is young and DEFINITELY has talent and wanna see where he goes is Jharrel Jerome (already has an Emmy).

edit: forgot to add John David Washington, Lakeith Stanfied, Daveed Diggs here as talents to watch.

>Honorable Mentions to the middle childs Chiwetel Ejiofor and

These two don't get their just due because they don't get enough looks (when I say looks I mean significant roles in big shit). But talent wise, they are up there.

If so:

Tied: Sam Jackson & Denzel
3. Mogan Freeman
4. Larry Fishburne
5. Wesley Snipes

If Box Office draw?

1. Denzel

And then everyone else...

Obviously we know Sam is the most bankable star with like $2 billion in movie receipts but I think him and the others not named Denzel don't really open movies like that anymore, they just are part of ensemble casts where the movie does well.

I still think that's Denzel. You don't go to see that new Sam Jackson which happens to be Star Wars. You go to see Star Wars and its a nice to have that they have Sam Jackson in it. Thosee movies were going to make a billion dollars without.

But Hitch made 100M+ because Will Smith was in.

Denzel is the most reliable actor in Hollywood in that if you are scrolling throw movies to watch if Denzel is on the poster you will check it out because the dude has one of the most consistent filmographies out there (Him and Brad Pitt in my opinion) and you want to see HIM.

But I'd argue that Don Cheadle and Will Smith both already belong in this group.

Follow-up Question:
Nope
I'd argue this comparison of those 5 up there to these 20-30 somethings though:

Denzel - John David Washington
Sam Jackson - Lakeith Stanfield
Wesley Snipes - Jason Mitchell
Laurence Fishburn - Donald Glover
Morgan Freeman - Brian Tyree Henry

I'd part Mahershala Ali right up there right now. Dude is "I can watch him reading a phone book" status already.

As for others, I think how good Chadwick Boseman was even before Black Panther. Yahya Adbul Mateen is showing a lot of potential. Aldis Hodge is pretty underrated. Same with Corey Hawkins. I want to see what Jonathan Majors and Ashton Sanders are in a couple of years. I think Michael B. Jordan can end up being really good. I think Daveed Diggs definitely has something. Jason Mitchell looked like he was on track to be really good before coming apart in the last few years.

A lot of good to great actors have been mentioned: Cheadle and Ejiofor (though neither are really that young). Stansfield, Brian Tyree Henry, and Donald Glover are building impressive resumes. I'm excited to see John David Washington in "Tenet."

Edit: I also think Michael K. Williams has a varied enough career that can consider him in solid company.

I had to google a few of them and I remember some of their performances if I didn't know their names.

The thing I would say, most of these young actors often play the strong stoic silent type. Daniel Kaluuya is a brother of few words.

I wonder which of these dudes could have the big presence of Sam Jackson in Pulp Fiction or Denzel in Training Day.

Or even the much larger than life presence of Eddie in Coming to America or Will Smith in Indepdence Day?

I mean, maybe he just like doing TV, but his post-Straight Outta Compton film resume is pretty sparse. He had a solid supporting role in Invisible Man, and that's really it.

He's got the range and the presence to go toe to toe to Larry Fishburne, but there was a stretch in the 90s and 2000s where you really didn't see the dude.

He's another dude I would love to see in another huge iconic role (like Wesley Snipes).

That's my order but all these guys are super legendary.
I have to admit that I'm probably ignorant to some of Morgan Freeman's earlier work.

He's a younger dude who I think has lots of promise. He carried the strange "High Flying Bird" and did work in Moonlight. .

1) Denzel
2) Samuel L
3) Larry Fish
4) Mr. Freeman
5) Bro. Snipes

I'd actually put Jeffrey Wright up there in the middle of them, too.

Chiwetel, Mahershala, Wood, Michael K, Idris right below them..

I think out of the newer generation, B Tyree Henry, Lakeith, Ashton, Shameik, Yahya, and Mamoudou are the most interesting and exciting to me.

I think of him in the slightly younger (or newer careers) band of Don Cheadle and Chiwetel Ejiofor but I haven't seen him HAM it up since that Shaft movie.

He’s great in a supporting role in it. And he plays things pretty light in it. I think he honestly deserved an Oscar for it.

However, Wright, and the actors who play his family, pretty much steal every scene that they're in.

I really didn't know he had that kind of performance in him. It was amazing.

Denzel's son has a big performance like the old school cats in Malcolm & Marie. I just saw it this weekend and I am still trying to make up in my mind whether he pulled it off.

I think Black Jesus will be the test for Daniel Kaluuya for me whether he can do performances other than the strong silent type.

Still haven't seen the Michael B Jordan range.

Man I am still waiting for Larry Fishburne to get bored with his great cushy gig and ham it up and do something that takes us back to the School Daze, King of New York Larry.

I am still waiting for the comeback Snipes role.

I feel like dude hasn't had a meaty, smooth Denzel, role in a minute. Playing a lot of old brokedown dudes. I know he is 66 years old but the Dinero's & Pacinos were still doing those slick roles at that age.

I like how you wrote Larry vs. Laurence....I'm still trying to recall when he stopped going by Larry and opted for Laurence.

I feel like Denzel has been playing the same character for like 20 years now lol...

But Larry??... Dude got RAAAAaaaaaange for days it seems....
He's probably top of my list as far as "old head" actors that are still currently putting in work.

I feel like Will still has potential that he hasn't tapped into....and I also put him in the "old head" category...

He excels at bio-pics, action movies, dramas and thrillers.

Larry can do it all.

Wesley got them all beat in the action department, because he does his own stunts
and is a master martial artist. He also has range, serious range, remember his role
as a woman in too Wong foo

Samuel Jackson beats them in the drama/comedy department. His roles are usually
the obnoxious, loud talking brother, who hits with sarcasm: gator, jewels, ordell.
He does have some range and he can pull off a serious drama movie.

Morgan Freeman is a master at narrating, and playing the wise, intelligent black role.
He gets a lot of pushback for appearing as the magical negro in his movies.

However, at the end of the day, Denzel wins because he is always the LEADING ACTOR and can carry a movie with no major costars. He is Tom Cruise and Tom
Hanks in our culture. Will Smith and Wesley are right below them because they
carried their own movies as well.

Everyone else, including Sam and Larry, can’t and haven’t carried major movies
by themselves. They usually play off the leading star. Only movies Larry carried
was Deep Cover and School Daze, where he was truly the leading actor. I can’t
think of any other movie where he was the Top Bill.
