"Listening to some Fugees today, is Lauryn Hill the GOAT female rapper?"

I can’t front I had almost forgotten how dope lyrically she was.

Now she is mainly known for not showing up for performances and jokes but in her PRIME?

Who’s fucking with her?

It's a shame that we really only got the one album where she shared rapping duties. I'd kill for a late 90's solo Lauryn album where she spat the majority of the songs.

It's Fugees stuff where she was 1/3rd and her solo album (while a classic) is half R&B. Even her most famous song with Fugees features no actual rapping.

But two things there:
1. This doesn't stop Biggie from being in the GOAT convo even though he has 2 albums (3 I guess if you count LAD as 2, but even then that album is not without filler, and I LOVE that album)
2. Who else is there? In recent years Rapsody is really making a strong push, her last two solos are my favorite albums by a female rapper not counting Miseducation.

But just focusing on bar-for-bar quality, Lauryn is in my top 10 (men or women) period.

I stand in your line. She could have been, but she just doesn't have the catalog in my mind.

The only other factor that saves here is that there isn't another woman that I think earns it (if you are not a Nicki fan).

is the number of records in a catalog as a determining factor into how great you were as an artist. Impact is far more important than making a ton of album when artists most times make a lot of misses.

Hendrix didn’t make that many albums and only had a 3 year run, but you don’t hear people kicking him out of best ever conversations because of it.

Jay-Z may be the GOAT but he is not the best MC to ever pick up the mic.

He himself would tell you that he’s not technically the best MC ever.

Greatest takes into account the success, popularity, longevity and other things that aren’t directly related to your actual talent.

There can’t be different definitions.

Different opinions, yes, but we have to at least start from the same understanding in order to have honest discussions about it.

And I’m not saying Jay is the GOAT just a very likely candidate.

the "GOAT" whether you're talking about music, sports, comedy, etc. is in itself a mythical title that is totally defined by people's opinions.

Jay is not in everyone's top 5. Lebron is not in everyone's top 5.

I wasn't able to come up with a definitive answer but those mentioned were Lauryn, Queen Latifah, Jean Grae, MC Lyte, and Lady of Rage.

I think in terms of pure talent it's almost impossible to say. And I'm almost definitely forgetting some.

For any MC.

As for GOAT female rapper? Eh, I'm not sure she has the body of work.

Two Fugees albums (one with the all-time great performance), the remixes, and then... How much does she really rap on "Miseducation"? She has a handful of legit great guest verses, and... that's it. Really wished she'd rapped more over her career.

As for who I'd put ahead of her, I'd say MC Lyte. And even though she seems to hate when people call her a female rapper, Jean Grae.

17. "She raps as much on Miseducation as Andre does on Aquemini"
In response to Reply # 15

That shit is crazy to me.

Because we look at Andre on Aquemini as a top tier MC performance over the course of an album but we look at Miseducation as an R&B album in which Lauryn doesn’t really rap.

In response to Reply # 50

One great album, one solid EP, and an alubm I've never heard (it appears to be an Australia only release).

She has more guest appearances than Lauryn, many of which are extremely dope: "Proceed III" and "Put Up Ya Lighter," "Da Ladies" (along with Lauryn), "Respect the Architect," "Breathe," etc. But it's another case when I'm not sure that she has the catalogue to be really considered the best.

Latifah’s law
Queen of royal badness

Would stomp any record that hill tries to come with.....the flow alone would lead to KO

Lyte throws on paper thin , just one record would and end any battle.

Hill is slightly overrated and live shows are below par. ...matter of fact most don’t think of hill when it comes to mcing ....I don’t. Like female master of ceremonies? Nope.

Ain’t no one thinking about Hill.

Late to shows, lazy performance, didn’t take her craft seriously. Never did appreciate her fans and and difficult. to work with.

And that female Jamaican style rap form and chorus all started with latifah and 45 kings

And latifah is a great jazz singer! Better than Hill at that too...acting as well.

Not saying she wasn’t a good artist and writer, but just a one hitter. Had the skills and ability to be much more. I just don’t believing in crowing artist who underachieved, and who had a couple of good records.

She just isnt on the same level as lyte and latifah as a MC. Cats really need to study hip hop.

It's not a diss to say that lauryn is not a MC. A lot of true hip hop heads feel that way, and when I mean true, cats who grew up on it in the golden era. ..84-90

A lot of her Peers feel that way as well. Here is Trina and why she does not consider Lauryn an MC. She sees it as a fusion like hip hop soul music or poetry meeting music. I feel the same way. It's not a diss.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxBhMHFbO24&t=334s

I grew up off true MCING....so my ear is different. And lauryn is good soul artist who can rhyme. But I don't consider her an MC

all that shit is relevant....You just don't know the history of it.

You heard one hip hop soul album and said someone is the goat....think about that. How many female Mcs have you listened to in your lifetime?

Not very many based on your conclusion.

Music Library assignment: Start in 1984, and listen all the way up until about 1995. I imagine you have knowledge regarding stuff after that...hopefully.

I've heard everybody and I've listened to both Fugees albums and Lauryn's solo album and in my opinion no other female rapper is fucking with her lyrically.

name me one rap battle that she was in? name me crews that she battled. answer records that she made?

None. Zero.

Roxanne Shante is from Queens! She was part of the legendary Juice Crew, and was the first female MC to battle male crews and male mcs!...The roxanne shante wars were answer records, where cats battled each other record for record.

Lauryn was never in any street hardcore rap battles. She started off as a singer, and learned to rhyme later after hooking up with Wyclef and Pras. And they wrote her rhymes and taught her how to rhyme. ...She didn't come from the streets of battle rhyming.

And she does not have the records, nor singles, nor guest appearances, etc.

Yall niggas are really scaring me ......your lack of mcing and rhyming knowledge is lackinnnnnng.

How far does your hip hop knowledge go? Because based off what you just said, not very far.

So let me educate. Because you're throwing GOAT on a name that does not deserve it.

Roxanne Shante:

Birth: Queens
Crew : Legendary Juice Crew

Legend: At the age of 14, She hooks up with the Marley Marl and Dj Mister Magic to make the legendary record Roxanne Revenge to get back at UTFO because they had reneged on a Hip Hop show. This was in the streets of Queens. That had never ever been done before by a female MC, and it happened in 1984. The record sold 250,000 records in New York alone. That's like selling 2.5 million in this day and age, and again she was 14. She was basically the creator of answer records, because they really jumped off after that.

And from that point on she did shows, made records, was part of the Bridge Wars with her record "have a nice day".

This is the woman who created the image and concept of the ill spitting female MC...She came before them all. And again, she was in a crew with Bizmarkie, Big Daddy Kane, Master Ace, Craig G, Kool G Rap, Marley Marl, Mc Shan.

But Lauryn makes a couple of rappity raps, never been in any battles, no answer records, etc, but she's GOAT?....Shante is the mother to her style and existence.

Mc Lyte

Birth: Brooklyn
Crew: Down with Audio Two

She started Mcing at the age of 12. Recorded her first tract at the age of 14. Created one of the illest dis songs with 10% Dis, a record that was dissing Antionette. Her discography goes 7 albums deep, and was the dopest female mc during the golden era, rocking shows and touring like crazy. To me she is the greatest female MC to walk the earth. She existed during an era where damn near every MC was ill. And not only is she listed as the greatest female mc, but she is also on the list of greatest Mcs in general.

But lauryn hill makes a couple of rappity raps, and according to you, that makes here GOAT over MC lyte? Where are lauryn battle records or albums? The legendary shows? The crews? A couple of Fugee albums and one solo HIP HOP SOUL album, and she's the goat?

Queen Latifah

Birth: Jersey

Crew: Flavor Unit/native tongue

Started off beat boxing.

She was put on by Fab 5 Freddy and Dante Ross after they heard her Demo. Changed the whole female rap game with her Jah/street mc flow, and by creating lyrics and songs that focused on the empowerment of women. Had some of the illest guest appearances as a female MC, and unlike mc lyte and shante, she is a fantastic singer ( jazz) and meaningful female actor. Here Hip hop discograpy runs 5 albums deep

The rhyme for rhyme, jamaican chant flow on choruses influenced Hill's chant style.

Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is a great album, but it is more of a Hip Hop soul album. She is basically a female version of WyClef, and that's not a diss. I like her music and I like her sound. And for the record she started off singing, Wyclef and Pras taught her how to rap and wrote her rhymes.

"Soon I was rhyming lines to her that she would memorize on the spot and spit back at me better than I had expected. I was her mentor, and I wrote rhymes for her starting then and for a while to come. I taught her all about rhyming, showing her the swag and style, just the way Chill Rob G had shown me years before. It didn’t take Lauryn long to make her style her own, though. She’s a very gifted woman."

But the title Female MC? Like Mic Controller? Battling? Diss records?
That's not her category. She doesn't have the history like the 3 illest females of all time. Please stop throwing the GOAT title around likes its a Frisbee

folks would listen to RS rhyme in the clip he just linked and LH rhyme in the clip I linked and give the edge to Lauryn on flow and word play. Her delivery's just a lot more dynamic to one's ears.

Personally, I don't really care about all that who wrote for who crap anyway. So many artists male and female collaborate that way (eg. in that Still DRE v. BTAU post folks talked about Jay writing Dre's verses like its no big deal), but *only* with female artists is it used to discredit their entire existence. It's annoying.

Always some unsubstantiated decades old rumor like something something Big wrote all Kim's shit something somethin Jay wrote all Foxy's shit something someting Wyclef wrote all Lauryn's shit. It's like the baseline assumption is supposed to be women are fundamentally incapable of writing and delivering dope rhymes.

I think it's safe to say the game just is what it is and all but the very few get put on/assisted by somebody at some point.

The Still Dre vs BTAU post wasn't about who was the better lyricist. It was solely about what was the more legendary club song overall. Absolutely nobody puts Dre in the best lyricist conversation, precisely *because* we all know he didn't write his own rhymes, so that applies to men as much as to women. Same goes for Puff. Biz Markie's "Goin Off" and "Vapors" are a testament to Kane's lyrical greatness and Markie's personality & delivery. Only recently have I seen someone like Drake get a pass, but I guess that's sign of changing times... and the fact that some claim it's just chorus help, and this generation don't really care about lyrics in general, etc.

Anybody saying Wyclef wrote Lauryn's rhymes is on some pure misogyny lol. Wyclef was never half as dope as Lauryn on his own OR in the group w/ her. "If you read the the magazines it says the girl shoulda went solo." Andre 3k used to write Big Boi's raps in Outkast's early days and you can tell. He's also widely considered a better rapper than Big Boi. I'd sooner believe Lauryn wrote Clef's rhymes than the other way around. I never heard anybody say this, but maybe it's because ppl know how I'd react lol. If this is a popular opinion, then it at least proves a point of people discrediting female emcees.

Maybe. I don't wanna discredit anyone who actually has written all their own rhymes tho.

But he did write her rhymes, coached her, and gave her the style that she illustrated. It’s all in his book, and he breaks it down. Pras assisted as well. Those are just facts.

I’m not voting against her just because of that. Shante, Latifah and Lyte all had
writers on certain songs.. They are just the way better performers and MCs in my book, with bigger catalogs and bodies of works as MCs.

The title GOAT entails so many different elements and requirements, and it’s shocking when the title gets thrown around so loosely, especially in this day and age. This is why the only opinion that matters are the legendary artists of hip hop. Your favorite MC does not equal GOAT.

It’s like in sports, fans don’t get to vote on MVP, etc, only the associated press and coaches are allowed. If it were up to fans, they would be voting based on popularity, etc.

for Lauryn's talent and success tho?? PLUS she's his ex. There's obviously some psychology behind his claim whether it's true or not. And that's *years* after the fact; imagine how fucked up the vibes must have been before she left the group.

Clef is the main promoter of that account of events.

edit: And it's possible things played out differently. But my overall point is even if he did help her out as she learned to rap, who cares? This happens all the time. It's not disqualifying imho, but we can agree to disagree.

Like I can see bonus points and/or docking points, that's fair. If someone has only ever written their own shit that's ultimately the point and they should get all deserved props. But to go as far as saying somebody doesn't even qualify as an MC bc someone helped them with some verses at some point? That's taking it too far imho. In part bc of how common it is.

Ya I hear you. I just brought it up bc it was the most recent post I could remember in which ghostwriting came up. But my ultimate point was just to say that the practice (or rumor of at one point participating in the practice) seems to hurt female artists a lot more than male artists.

People do discredit and overlook female emcees way too much. The rumor that biggie wrote for Kim is good proof of that as well.

It's a tough choice because Lauryn had a crazy prime. But I've been rocking with Lyte since i heard "Cram To Understand U" on Red Alert, that's my pick.

She's featured on what was arguably the greatest hip hop album of the decade (TPAB - and might be the only rap/verse feature if IIRC), and that's something considered by the wide general public, hardly an OKP/underground belief.
