"Poll question: Better song as a producer: Back That Azz Up or Still DRE"

Another excellent battle but I thought Scott had it and ending with Still DRE is the only thing that has a chance against Azz.

Poll result (36 votes)
Back That Azz Up (13 votes)Vote
Still DRE (23 votes)Vote

also:

'treat rap like Cali weed, I smoke til

nobody from Cali says that.

he erased some linguistic footprints, though for sure. But when you *listen in Jay-Z's voice' it has tones of 'this was written by an outsider'

I'm shocked at how many here didn't know this.

I didn't find out until a few years after it came out, but I still figured at that point that it was common knowledge, at least in hip hop circles.

I don’t think I would’ve known if his name wasn’t on the wax. But once you know, you can’t hear it without hearing Jay in his ‘battling DMX’ or ‘rapping with Fox’ style.

Puff got a lot of flack but it seems I’ve been onto Dre not writing his own shit forever and I was always trying to figure out who wrote what. He was going all over to get lyrics.

There's a funny interview about this with Snoop where he said they had a bunch of cats in the room trying to write this song and Dre reached out to Hov, sent him the beat and a few hours later dude sent it back with vocals.

And that was that.

Easily believable if you've ever heard stories of how Jay-Z works. This would have been light work for him during that time period.

In response to Reply # 12

There's nothing in the BTAU beat that's remotely close.

It's busier, ass shaking music.

But there's nothing that approaches the magic of that piano riff.

Yeah Juvy put in a classic performance, and the totality of that song is magic.

Dre dies his thing vocally but it's whatever. That piano riff is the single best thing about either song, by a mile.

So beat vs beat, Still D.R.E wins easily imo

In response to Reply # 18

Straight quarter note minor key riff on strings vs. a straight eight note minor key riff on piano. And both songs open with just the string/piano line and are instantly recognizable by it.

But yeah - Still DRE's is better.

I was just refering to the way some posters split the the poll options according to gender, race, etc. It would have been interesting to see how differently southern folks felt on this, if so.

I didn't mean to imply that's what you were saying.

I think all the biases you mentioned will play some role in most things, but especially with music.

So my point was that, the results are the results based on those who voted, and southern folks wouldn't need their own entry to be heard in it.

But I agree, the breakdown by group would be interesting to see.

In response to Reply # 24

TOKP is posting generic, incredulous dismissals of something, while refusing to engage on the merits of that thing.

We could be having a fun, engaging discussion, but instead we got people who just can't handle the notion that, oh em gee, different people have different opinions on an entirely subjective topic.

So if you're calling this post TOKP, you're correct, but not because of the song that's winning this poll.

It's just empty, low-level grandstanding. It's about as much of a Generic Response On The Internet as it can possibly get.

You *could* contribute in a meaningful, constructive way on a topic about which we are all passionate.

Instead, you've chosen....this.

Back that Ass Up being better at getting people dancing doesn’t necessarily mean it’s “better produced”.

In response to Reply # 34

BTAU has way more bells and whistles, and a fair amount of people really need those change ups.

The only issues I have with everyone bugging out over the Dre joint winning, is that this is completely subjective, and nobody is really lending any sort of engaging opinion. It's just OMG WHAT, SO TYPICAL.

Promo did say that BTAU would a party going harder, but I don't know that that's true at all. I think either one could get it poppin, and one or the other would work better for different crowds.

And like you're implying, making people dance doesn't make the production better, nor does it make the beat better. IMO that's *a* criteria, but not *the*.

Shit you could throw on Skee Lo's "I Wish" with a certain crowd and get a bigger reaction than either. You throw on "This Is How We Do It", and people will lose their minds.

i listened to both today, along with just the instrumental versions and BTAU is pretty much just a loop. still dre has more parts come in through out the song, not huge change ups and still pretty much just a loop but it actually has more details. i was expecting the opposite to be honest. i wouldnt say still dre has way more bells and whistles either but id give it the edge.

maybe theres more happening with vocals in BTAU but not with the music.

its a close call to which one is better and comes down to preference.

arguments in support of Still DRE so far, fwiw lol

And, agreed, on it pretty much coming down to preference. Bc even if folks could agree on Still DRE being a more polished production, many would still find it boring or whatever simply bc of its tempo

when i was listening earlier i thought still dre is kinda simple. some think thats good, some think thats bad. but it definitely has some polish to it. you can see how those little touches it does have are well thought out. they are put in to give emphasis to the vocals and its not designed to be a track that is meant to just have instruments. its designed to work with vocals.

its also a pretty easy song to rap to. i remember it was used a lot for yahoo freestyles back then lol

both songs are iconic, easily recognizable even without their vocals. i think BTAU kind of relies more on the vocals and hook than still dre.

still dre is more my vibe but im not gonna be mad at someone preferring BTAU.

In response to Reply # 42

when it comes to "BETTER" the only criteria should be what does the beat or song DO when it comes on. how does it affect the listener, how does it move the crowd?

if y'all wanna analyze which is the more techincal piece? that's wht Y'ALL are doing.

now, even still, "better" IS subjective. but i've been to hundreds of events where both songs were played and i'm going with my scientific research that Back That Azz Up is better because people react to it more.

p.s. - not replying to any more responses about this but if you wanna type something out to make yourself feel better, go ahead.

which song is a better production which by definition makes the technical aspects of each fair game.

That doesn't mean the energy/dancefloor impact you're talking about isn't also part of it too, tho.

We all agree they're both iconic tracks and this boils down to preference/personal opinion, right? It's all good

God forbid.

>when it comes to "BETTER" the only criteria should be what
>does the beat or song DO when it comes on. how does it affect
>the listener, how does it move the crowd?

"Should be" is subjective. The criteria should be whatever the observer thinks is most important.

>if y'all wanna analyze which is the more techincal piece?
>that's wht Y'ALL are doing.

Nobody is analyzing "which is the more technical piece", and delving into the technicap aspects doesn't make that the criteria.

Still, we are having an actual discussion. Thoughtful, engaging, not trying way too hard to e-swag all over the post.

But hey, if you're too cool for school, do you. But you don't get to act like a jackass without being called on it.

>now, even still, "better" IS subjective. but i've been to

That's anecdotal, which is fine, but it's not scientific.

Was trying to find something nice to say, lol.

At least the Jevenile song is based on an older genre call "bounce," and I respect the fact that I just don't like bounce music.

Dr. Dre's wackness is seemingly self-created, and has been making McBeats since he left Death Row. Just 2- and 4-bar loops for the whole song. SMH.

Also a couple of the early Beyowulf tracks (I mean she's credited...but what does that really mean?). And early CB tracks

I think producer vs producer "didn't" work in this scenario only b/c Scott didn't have a label like Mannie (hell like most producers). Like maybe Mannie vs Beats By The Pound would have been more sufficient?

based on the songs they played it was pretty even for me, just going song by song. scott has worked on a lot of songs i really dont like and so has mannie. higher highs and lower lows for team scott.

but yeah the whole time i was thinking the same thing. is this fair? how much of each track did scott even make?

when put up against many producers. Dude was the in-house producer for one label. His productions are extremely limited. I don’t recall him ever being highly sough after. Though I enjoyed some of his production on Cash Money records, I believe No Limits’ Beat by the Pound collective was better.

Watching that VERZUZ between these two was hard because, to me, Mannie’s limitations were evident and there wasn’t enough versatility.

lol

What are other matchups folks would like to see? Or, at least, other producers?

-I'd love to see Pharell/Neptunes go up against somebody. Preferrably another heavyweight. But I saw rumblings he's not into it.

-I think Kanye would be fun to watch against somebody too. It'd be interesting to see what he'd pull from his Rocafella days v. his solo stuff and/or collabs. Now that he's gone gospel I wonder if he'd even do it tho.

-Just Blaze is one of my faves so I'd watch him against anyone lol. I recently rewatched/relistened to his Hot97 battle v. Swizz tho and there's prob only a few other producers he could go up against that would be as entertaining.

-I saw that Teddy Riley's supposed to battle Babyface and I think thats dope. If not Babyface, I think another good opponent for him, who doesn't come up much but I think would actually do super well in this format, is Rodney Jerkins/Darkchild. I don't stan for him or anything, but dude's catalogue is insane and he composed pretty much the entire pop r&b landscape from late 90s to 2000s. Like he produced for everyone from MJ to Whitney Houston, Mary J Blige, Brandy and Monica,Destiny's Child and Beyonce, even Britney Spears and the boy bands (eg. Backstreet Boys, NSync) etc. A lot of pop r&b hits from that era were Darkchild.

Other thing is, some matchups might be more entertaining from a musical perspective... like we're reminded of a producer's talent, range etc. And other matchups, it might literally just be about the hits. And I could care less either way, it's all fun tbh lol.

it SHOULD have been Scott Storch vs. Neptunes. now Neptunes gonna get pretty much everyone out of here, but that's a more appropriate pairing based on amount of output, #1 songs, etc. both Storch and the Neptunes also shared pretty much the same "heyday" from 2000-2006. obviously Pharell has produced a lot of shit since 2006 but it's been more select and spotty (although some of those have been like biggest song of the year type songs, of course).

Mannie Fresh should have battled DJ Paul. much more appropriate pairing.

Kanye should battle Organized Noize (that would just be fun).

Just Blaze should battle Alchemist. I would put Bink's name their too but just for output Alchemist fits more.

personally

I mean their hip hop catalogue alone is crazy, but then you gotta factor in all the older r&b they did under Teddy Riley and the SWV shit. Then on top of that producing massive hits for Sade talk less of Britney Spears, JT, etc.

Like, Storch definitely got bangers but I don't know if his range can compete with Pharrell + Chad lol

And I think Just Blaze v. Kanye might even be fun tbh. Like they could go pound for pound on their Rocafella work (which Blaze would win) and then it'd really come down to their post-Rocafella catalogues (where I think Kanye might be more competitive). Can't call it tho

this is where it gets tricky, and why I don't fault Scott for playing some of the stuff he did. Or anyone that plays anything they contributed to. That's how the shit works sometimes

Dare I even say Kanye might even go back to being Old Kanye if he brings out enough of College Dropout during the battle lol.

I was thinking about girl vs girl matchup and can't really think of any that I would like...

Obviously Missy versus any girl or guy would be amazing.

Darkchild vs JD might be interesting...

either! That's the unfortunate thing, really.. that women were mostly relegated to providing vocals and/or eye candy. Far fewer in the production space. Maybe some okps could name some tho

Would female DJs count? lol
