I got in a screaming match with my head of HR and CEO because I didn't think they were treating the corona virus seriously. I think they got it by the end but it has become really hard to do my ordinary daily workload when I feel like no one sees where all this is heading at my job so our work will all be moot in about a few months.

I rather be out helping people deal with the new reality than trying to figure out how to sell a product that will be useless in a few months. SMH.

https://www.ibtimes.com/nasa-warns-3-asteroids-currently-headed-earth-2941791

First one's supposed to go past us tonight.

Then there's the big one on April 29:

Large asteroid will fly by the Earth next month, but won't hit us, reassures NASA: https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/03/world/asteroid-1998-or2-close-flyby-earth-scn-trnd/index.html

NASA & FEMA coincidentally had a drill for this exact situation last year: https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?feature=7386

Same FEMA that just got activated.

I'm worried Americans don't know how to handles this situation. The US has become so anti intellectual, anti science. Its like being an American means you hope to get rich and famous, and worry about you and yours.

ive been staying optimistic, we can get it in control. we can work to minimize the impacts, etc. but thinking about how life is with doing so does suck.

my sister had her baby yesterday. we are planning to fly out to visit her in a couple of weeks. i honestly dont know if we still will, if flights will be shut down by then. if we even should. i know my mom is worried and i want to see her but i dont want to get her sick if i unknowingly have it or catch it on my way there.

doesnt help that my sisters husband recently left her. i want to be there for them.

blah

7 year old is first grade and the schools are all gung Ho about keeping them going with curriculum so they’re sending assignments and lessons and “encouragement” via email. All that does is make us feel inadequate and like we’re never going to be able to do enough since we still have to work full time even if it is telework. The teachers seem to be forgetting that little component..... they aren’t “working” in the same capacity as working parents are during this.

Plus the 7 year old is a typical 7 year old with too much energy, too much mouth and enough intelligence to know how/when to push our buttons to the point of destruction.

The 3 year old is following the 7 year old’s lead. But she needs constant attention because she’s a 3 year old. She’s potty trained and all that jazz but you can’t just leave a 3 year old to their own devices like a 7 year old....

Few of the important tasks will seem that important a week from now or a month from now. That's almost assured at this point.

Meanwhile, your kids need you more than anything right now. To navigate today, tomorrow, and whatever the future holds. Nobody else can do for them what you can.

Before shit went south I was starting to go to bed early to get up early to work on stuff before I got the kids up.

Now with the kids home, I will be going to bed at a hard 10 or 10:30, getting up at 5 and using that time to do any and all deep work until 12 or so. During that time my wife has first shift and phone meetings with her job.

Then, I switch positions to parent and she will use the rest of the day to buckle down and work.

Around 5-5:30 is dinner time and the kids will be in bed by 6:30-7.

Somewhere in that day will be an exercise/activity moment for everyone to get out of the house/move.

It's fucked, but if I can adjust to becoming a father then I can adjust to this.

We're going to get through this, I'm planning on using this time to just be able to bond with family and have a crazy moment we can talk and laugh about in the future.

She was talking about taking shifts with the kids..

But if my boss contacts me I have to be present at my computer.

He has a 2 year old and knows work and toddlers is damn near impossible.

Hate to say it but I’m concerned about my gig. I’m not considered “important” in a time like this. Well, not important enough for mandatory attendance at the office.

Going to prolly knock out these last 2 days and then WFH next week.

Gotta be upfront and honest with the boss

one thing that has worked for me is to have my boss play quarterback for my tasks. I always have about 3 to 5 projects coming my way and I'm the only interactive designer on staff. I don't produce well (accurately, or make good work) under pressure or if I'm not prepared so we work together. A lot. A lot a lot. I say this because its a good way to set expectations up front and work out some hard stop times if you go with a shift style arrangement. That way....what fires?

Why do you have to be at your computer when youre contacted? Skype/Slack?

Oh man. I feel that. Again - have that bald ass honest convo with the boss about how things will go down. Secure your position AND the bag.

I’m prolly projecting a bit.... Hell, I’ve never done it before with him so it may not be that serious as far as being at my desk at all times.

Just concerned because my kids are at the Daddy, Daddy, Daddy stage.

Daycare is still open, might send them in but we will discuss tonight.

I’ve been knocking shit out the park and want to continue on this trajectory. This Rona threw a big ass curve in my plans.

The way it works now is I set Quarterly goals and he reviews and tweaks them. It works but right now a lot of my projects were physical and now we have a bunch of products in the office just sitting here because events were cancelled. Now it’s time to focus on digital projects and online strategies.

sure, corona fucked things up, but it also kinda shook things up, adjust and take advantage of the opportunities it opened up....which wont become clear what those are just yet, just be ready.

oh same, quarterly goals are a bitch to write and hit. are you using a S.M.A.R.T. criteria to make it easier to make a case for yourself?

Specific – target a specific area for improvement.
Measurable – quantify or at least suggest an indicator of progress.
Assignable – specify who will do it.
Realistic – state what results can realistically be achieved, given available resources.
Time-related – specify when the result(s) can be achieved.

I always have an in-depth project in the back pocket. When things slow down I pull that one up and put it out there. No one asked for it, no one was looking for it, I just hit em with it like: https://media.giphy.com/media/xzhqJf1uc2K2s/giphy.gif

Like for example, outside of day to day projects, I'm winding up a research project to build up a clear image of users at the firm. I can technically go to HR and ask for a demographic breakdown but they can only go so far, like, they will not be able to tell me (legally) the age breakdowns or group numbers by age. Senior staff members here are unsurprisingly older folks and they love using iPads, yet we keep pushing PC laptops on them. AND our new crop of associates are...visually extremely different, we got a few with septum piercings, a brother with cornrows, a few bigass zz top looking fuckers....and this in the most corporate of places, like, THE-THE ivory fucking tower.

Whenever I drop these back pocket projects on leadership it puts my name out there and raises the bar. The only bad thing is that it makes it harder to slack off in the future.

I definitely try to keep it realistic but sometimes I over reach or things get pushed to the side due to emergencies or something getting thrown on my desk at the last minute.

Now is definitely the time to use it since there won’t be many outside interruptions.

I like the idea of a project that isn’t on the list when times are slow. I’m def going to use that idea.

the thing about back pocket projects - when they go well, hell, even if they fail they serve a purpose to set the stage to show management and the company how you think, where you want to go and that you're able to think beyond the scope of your role.

As a designer you have to keep upping the bar or else you run the risk of being stuck in a service capacity - meaning, you could get in a trap where you only focus on keeping your head down and doing a good job, but then when you look up after a few years have passed you realize that you've been rowing a boat like fuck and going nowhere. You've become the guy who's really really good at doing that one thing and nothing else.

I would also suggest checking out The Crazy 1 podcast. Its the best design career podcast out there and his angle/approach is pretty candid and amazing.

A lot of the Texas community and my company are coming together in herculean ways to ensure that some things are still running and while I applaud their efforts, some of this stuff feels like unnecessary sacrifice and I'm learning a lot about myself in the process.

Mainly that I'm just not that kind of person. For weeks I've been informing my coworkers about some of the things I was reading, telling them the steps I was taking, asking them about theirs ... and nobody, not a one was taking this as seriously as it.

And now everyone is taking this as a challenge, but some of the things they're doing are also backwards. An example in the name of optics they're still holding meetings in small conference rooms, meetings that could be held by calls. They're also still pushing people to come to the office, in spit of full telework capabilities. And folks are ... because in their eyes "we're all in this together".

And while that's true, it's also not. Nobody else is taking care of you or your family. Nobody else has the range of responsibilities for your life and whatever that means more than you do. So when people put themselves directly in harms way, unavoidably, when there was a different path to take before that happened, and now there's still other options ... I just haven't been able to buy in.

CA schools are canceled until August. No idea what I going to do with the boy but I suppose we'll figure something out. I am not an educator but I think this will be somewhat of a sobering experience for him. He'll learn how to garden as we grow our own food, have more responsibilities with his chores and he'll definitely learn more about community as we drop off supplies to our friends.

i don't know what the world will be like for him and his generation but all i can do is prepare him.

I’m not sure how to digest this while, “social distancing” thing. Like, what does it even mean, will it become the new norm? I be thinking about shit like, the handmaid’s tale. Idk, I’m uncomfortable and fearful of how things are about to change. It’s not for the better...

and can't understand why I am upset. Today her and her sisters (all over 60) wanted to eat some crab legs they had in the freezer so they we to the store to get ... I don't actually know what, but it had something to do with those crab legs.

I am like "Mom! WTF! You got everything you need. Why did you go to the store?" She's like "SuiteLady! Wasn't nobody even in there and they didn't even have what I wanted"

Then we have this conversation where I had to explain to her (once again) that her getting sick would really upset me.

I swear!

for a) basement floor cleaning and b) the basement stairwell handrail that had be removed and set aside. I called him and told him that nothing was wrong with my side of the basement floor and I wasn't the person who removed the handrail - the person who moved out the building before me did (it's a 4 unit building with a shared basement). I didn't reattach it because I needed to get my washing machine out and the person who lived in the unit above me wanted to her washing machine in.

I also reminded him that I requested a walk thru with him on Feb 22 and he told me to just leave the keys in the unit, so Missouri law says you can't withhold any part of the security deposit minus a walk thru.

This man called me and text messaged me literally all day on March 9th claiming that a carbon monoxide detector was missing from the unit and there are several holes in the wall and that I need to call the city building inspector to explain the railing being removed. I was like "Dude, there never was a carbon monoxide detector in there and I aint calling nobody. You own me money. Send me my $75." Finally, I blocked his number because he was bombarding me with calls and texts.

In today's mail this mother fucker sent me a letter demanding $48 from me! LOL! When I saw the envelop I was like "kool. he sent me the rest of my money." Nope! The fucker is now saying I owe him $48 AFTER I have cashed the initial security deposit check.

LOL!! I was actually about to send him a letter that I got from Equal Housing Opportunity Council saying that Missouri code 5-something-something states that if you don't have a walk thru they cannot legally withhold any part of the security deposit. And this fucker sent me a letter demanding I give him back $48! Now he saying I took all the light bulbs out the unit, an electrical outlet plate cover is missing and other non-sense.

All because I called him out on the $75 he took. This is soo damn stupid! I am out $75. I hope that old fucker gets Coronavirus. That would be better than getting my $75 back. And I mean that!!

Not sure if it was an OD or natural.

There were 3 groups of kids in our school. The rich white kids, the Black kids and the poor white kids.

First 2 groups are thriving.

That 3rd group tho... the opiates are doing a number on them.

I'm doing my best to stay in the house. I had to go out on tuesday night to take my mom to emergency and also yesterday morning to get her meds. no corona. otherwise, I'm 'working' from home.

meanwhile, she and her mom have been out daily since Sunday. her mom was getting a car. that took 3 days for them to get done. then yesterday, they leave to get to her uncle's place.

this morning, wife leaves again. no MIL this time. I didn't ask anything about it cuz it doesn't matter if its not urgent.

no idea why she can't see the importance of staying her ass in the house. her mom will be 70 this year. so of course, she's got other issues that make it easier for her to get this mess.

Yes, we've talked about it. I'm tired of talking. if we end up with this shit.....................

Y'all buy those labels, I was born supreme

In response to Reply # 0

people are seriously scared

our healthcare workers are stressed

i've never seen anything like this

it's like the calm before the storm

the screening practices are laughable at best

i am so frustrated

if the numbers from italy are correct, in about 2-3 weeks it's going to start to get fucking real as hell

testing should have BEEN expanded

screening should have BEEN mandatory in all buildings, public and private

masks, gloves will do jack shit if the ever evolving knowledge of covid keeps changing

while our medical temas make light on conferenc calls because laughing is a balm, privately the medical doctors and nurses, MA's etc are really fucking worried.

the patients are shook

we haven't seen the worse of it yet.

the snaky way this virus snakes through communities and can stealth it's symptoms and then cluster is going to fucking rock poorly prepared health care systems

my advice, stay home as much as you can

kids can get it

the immune deficient are at the top of the list, but the young CAN get it

be safe

i'm scared, but I can't act afraid.

i'm just quietly optimistic that we will take care of each other in my circle

Once we get into a rhythm I think it will work lovely.

Real talk. Coworker and I talked about how we could WFH and meet once a week and probably be more productive. Didn’t want it to happen like this tho.

...

my vacation tho.. smh. Can’t believe my first real vacation with the wife was ruined by this pandemic. Just blessed we weren’t out of the country when this went down. That woulda been awful. I feel for those who had weddings or huge plans or put all their money into an event.
