"Let's talk about aging rappers"

Getting old is never not weird.

Hip hop is and always will be music of the youth or music that celebrates youthfulness.

That said, I was looking at a picture of Jay Z and I was thinking, by the time my kids are old enough to know their ass from their elbow Jay Z is going to be a respected black elder like Morgan Freeman or Harry Belafonte

It's a mindfuck and I feel like no one is talking about what it feels like to watch rappers age.

old man rap or whatever some have called it beginning with 4:44. You have David Lee Roth and Steven Tyler performing most of their earlier cagtalogue and that loose content. In hip-hop, there's been that criticism of rappers lyrics with content that does to match their current status as millionaires etc who don't sell drugs or scrounge etc. It's testament that some rappers like Jay have elevated their latter release with more maturity but they seem beholden to the NOW or else face criticism for 'bullshittin'.

And I think the answer is "yes" in most cases. Obviously they're not quite as old *yet* but I think we're at the point where a lot of those listed in this post are considered "legacy acts" as opposed to currently-relevant artists.

And IMO it seems that Snoop, Cube, Jay, etc. are getting the same type of love and respect on a universal level that the Stones et al have always gotten.

Plus when they tour they're gettin similar $$$ too it seems, based on ticket prices haha.

just because a rock group is old means it's loved

some shit is considered mad joke-y or low class like hair metal

but thats not really answering the question

hard to say. I mean, in Rock you do your homework and look at the old greats (to generalize)

and in rap, you say fuck the past, I'mma do ME. and you just burn what came before or your kill the king to become the king

buuuut, then there are lots of exceptions. some new rappers studied the greats and came to a conclusion that while the greats are great, building on what they built is not always the way to paper. I'm like both surprised and NOT surprised when I find out X new rapper, mumble rapper, trap person was known for spitting tight rhymes in highschool or being a backpacker back in the day (ahem, Lil' Uzi Vert, Will.I.Am, etc)

We see how that worked out. So, like Keith Richards said, rock was new and it was the first time it was going to have a generation take it into middle and late age. They seem to have done it respectively. So I guess Jay and them can do the same, even though by and large, the lyrical content of rap back then doesn't always lend itself to later age respectability. But then again, neither does Monkey Man or Midnight Rambler. And those are highlighted in current tours. Billy Eiliish needs to recognize that there's a lot of lying in rock. And for the record I hate having to just use Jay as the representative in these discussions.

But that's demonstrably not the case. We got jada opening an album takking about his son. Jay dropping more and more thoughtful material as he ages.

The Roots are the motherfuckin' TONIGHT SHOW HOUSE BAND.

There are so many artists that are addressing their life and their world, as it is, in real time. Not explicitly saying "yeah I'm old", but there's a notable difference in the music as they age.

We got these older legends giving the rub to the kids coming up.

To that end, your point isn't invalid, but doesn't paint the entire picture. Hip hop is music of the youth and celebrates youthfulness, but it's much more than that.

Rappers can still rap. Meanwhile, I could probably burn Deion on a deep post and dunk on Shaq about now (assuming that *I* could still dunk, lol... I'm old too).

you know how fucking awkward it is as a black man to not know sports?! you got any idea how fucked up the barber shop experience has been in my life?

At this point I know how to fake it,

"Yeah man, Jordan, Kobe. Yeah yeah, uh huuuh, Marshawn Lynch, uh uh, sports. Balls. Touchdown my nigga. Uh huh"

but go beyond my 1 inch depth of knowledge and it's

BURN THIS NIGGA FOR NOT LOVING THE FRATERNAL BROTHERHOOD OF SPORTS BALL. BOOOOOO NIGGA.

I don't think I've watched one full NBA or college basketball game all season, and I spent most of my youth playing ball pretty seriously.

Just grew out of it, which is why almost all of my sports references are from the 80s, 90s and early 00s.

Kinda the same with hip hop & R&B. My girl clowns me because of my old-ass Ja-Rule and Ashanti references, but that's around when I stopped listening.

I tend to be more upfront with it. They tend to shrug and just move on to girls, politics, hood politics, movies, and music. But I feel you though. Some people feel they have to have that mindset due to expectations. I just ignore them and so far it has been working out great.

SHIT. I am tripping. Here I was worried that my picks might be viewed as too biased by coast or era when I managed to ignore and ENTIRE fucking gender.

That said, is there a constructive way to hold a conversation on aging, and women and not have it devolve into misogynist territory?

>
>I hate the idea that people think everyone remains the same.

You're right. I guess for me its very trippy to think about my own aging and then to look at heroes and see that they suffer from the same things.

That would be:

Nas - I think he is the first credible rapper to do it.
Jay-Z - Wins the most Growth award
Little Brother - Have always been the group who raps about the shit I am going through on a daily basis and that still hasn't change.
De La Soul - The first group to rap about life after the limelight which they did way before there time on only their second album.

What I personally hate to hear is rappers who haven't changed in 20 years. Busta nobody wants a club anthem from you. I am going to get heckled for this one but, Jada, no one wants to hear about your gangerster-ism when you get AARP shit in the mail. If you an old Gangsta, you need to rap about the good old days and the patnas you lost along the way, not how you still holding it down.

And for the Ladies, Queen Latifah did a good job of grown women rap on that Rapsody song.

I agree on all of your points

I even loved De La's Stakes is High video long before I became grown for the visuals that broke expectations

i don't get it either when rappers who've been in the game forever are still talking about the same stuff - the only way I can explain it/think about it is that the content is irrelevant and it should only be seen as a medium for the artform, what matters most is the connective tissue tying everything together

I love seeing older black men look healthy and sharp. It is such a turn on.

I think that often black men over 55 look so sickly, overweight and unhealthy, even if they are athletes.

Keep rising beautiful people.
