"The Apocalypse Lockdown Activity Planning Poast"

so, the great 'stay yo ass at home' is now upon us (in the US, for those international okps it may have come already, or is coming soon). in light of that, i'm gonna throw this up, with different categories where we can post ideas, thoughts, and such.

try to do something creative and constructive.

for example

PRACTICAL:
- how much supplies to have on hand, tips for provisioning, prepping, info on how to manage work from home, school closings, business impacts, etc.

PLANNING / POLICY:
- impact on the economy. how long will the impacts be? where are the opportunities gonna be? what resources are available? strategies for navigating the downtime

SELF-IMPROVEMENT:
- learn something? health goals?

NETFLIX AND CHILL:
- good series to binge, etc., books to read

OTHER:
- the gd of this poast.

if you have an idea for a topic, post it in all caps under the main post. for a sub-topic, post in all caps under the topic.

peace & blessings,

x.

just had a chat with my homie and encouraged him to post some of these very thoughts:

"- Prepare for this like you would any major natural disaster. Food, supplies, medicine, clothes, etc. Don’t panic but you have to consider nothing is off the table, including downed power grids and shut off gas and water. Worst case scenario if you over-prepare for this is that you’ll have an emergency contingency plan in place for a natural disaster (the big one) or mass social disorder (ie the LA Riots).
- Be situationally aware of your surroundings and people nearby. When resources are scarce, people/opportunists who have nothing to lose and everything to gain will seek to take advantage. This doesn’t exclusively mean be vigilant as we should also have kind hearts and be looking out for those most vulnerable and in need. Keep an eye out for the elderly especially."

>Food, supplies, medicine, clothes, etc.

this is really important. but we also have to manage the line between prep and hoarding. i was fortunate that i had a bonus and payday that hit and we were able to go out and get about 3 weeks (or more, depending upon how we stretch) of food at once.

we also got medicine (dayquil and nyquil), coricidine b/c my wife has high blood pressure.

we were able to find toilet paper. had paper towels on hand.

thing is, we wouldn't have even been able to do modest prep had this hit within a pay period. for people that don't make that much money this is going to be very trying.

Don’t panic but you
>have to consider nothing is off the table, including downed
>power grids and shut off gas and water. Worst case scenario if
>you over-prepare for this is that you’ll have an emergency
>contingency plan in place for a natural disaster (the big one)
>or mass social disorder (ie the LA Riots).

this aspect is very troubling. i think we're about 2-4 weeks off from things getting apocalyptically bad here, but i think it's within the realm of outcomes. what would be incredibly dire is if a natural disaster hits in the middle of this (storms, floods, etc).

>- Be situationally aware of your surroundings and people

>advantage. This doesn’t exclusively mean be vigilant as we

yep. hence the twilight zone comments. people are already exhibiting wild selfish behavior.

source.

That's preparing if the power possibly goes out.

Car full of gas.

I am worried if we get more toilet paper we would be accused of hoarding.

Fridge stocked with food but so wishing I owned a deep freezer.

I purged my cabinets of expired can goods but that was a tough call because I was so wondering a day might arrive where I wish I had those can of beans that were 3 years expired.

under here, kind of an okp think tank. preface (if you will) with your expertise (health provider, military, IT, finance, etc)

lets brainstorm on some key questions:

- what will be the impact on the economy?
- how long will the impacts be?
- where are the opportunities gonna be?
- what resources are available?
- are there some strategies for navigating the downtime?

"- If you are heavily invested in the market, assess your current financial situation at hand and consider liquidating. Take any profits you currently have and consider it a win. You can always get back in later, and at a lower cost. A shutdown is imminent, I predict midweek at the latest, which will definitely cause the markets to crash. If this lasts longer than expected, which I’ve been saying it will for weeks now, you’ll need to be liquid to pay your rent, mortgage, car note, and to purchase goods. Don’t count on the government to bail you out. Only rich people/corporations get bailouts. The current deal on the table that the senate has yet to pass most likely won’t protect you. See attached NY Times article. Just my opinion but do what you think is best for you and your family.

In response to Reply # 2

just jotting down thoughts here, on industry and impacts

small business dependent upon face to face interaction -
outlook - 3 - 8 week, at minimum disruption based upon increasing guidance (recommendations, then, eventually, legally enforced ) on social distancing.

my wife's candle business as a case study. we had a huge show planned for this weekend. fri-sat-sun. we had to stock up in advance for it. they waited until the last possible minute to announce the cancellation. so that was a big hit. and then we had our biggest spring lineup yet, planned, with another 5 really big artisan and craft events and markets between now and April. this is supplemental income for us, but for many of our fellow vendors, this is a primary source of income. a lot of these folks (and our customer sets) are older or have medical issues.

optimistically if things return to some semblance of normalcy by May or so, it's gonna be really tough.

What are we doing?

we'll do some stuff to increase our online business. we don't want to be crass or opportunistic. we have this one nice old lady who has been asking for our honeysuckle jasmine candle. we're going to call her and let her know i'll drop a candle off to her. (alternative would be for her to visit a place that carries our candles but the shopkeepers are old and medically fragile).

depending upon the length of this thing, there won't be a lot of people with disposable income. for those that do have it like that, i guess a shop small campaign would be cool.

this assumes, however, that the whole postal / delivery infrastructure stays up and active. really not our primary focus right now.

In response to Reply # 10

i don't know how they are gonna make it. there's gonna need to be something done from a state / federal perspective to help these businesses.

in the interim i suppose you could switch to an all delivery model. there are going to be a lot of complications to that, though.

potential problems:

- danger of customer interactions
- trust
- infrastructure (what will be open and allowed)
- laws

in china from what i've read, takeout places posted the temperatures of every person who came in contact with a meal from preparation to delivery.

that's a good better than nothing solution, i guess. but it doesn't address asymptomatic viral shedding, nor does it take into account people's honesty and compliance. in china, i imagine people are MUCH less likely to try and get over than they are here.

this is a problem that needs to be solved though. especially for our elderly.

We have been increasing our webinars

and I’ve been trying to increase our online presence on LinkedIn and FB with more Blog post.

We’ve had to cancel a good 3 or 4 events thus far. While it’s frustrating I also finally get a chance to really focus on the website. Upgrading the home page and changing a few landing pages to help us get more interaction.

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

yep. i really need to be doing that. granted i'm still working. but not having anything outside the house to do in the evenings (bball season and coaching are over), and 'saving' 2 hrs a day on commute AND being able to finesse some time at the crib. (i'm more productive at home anyway, b/c nobody coming to my desk bullshitting), and not having to hear other ppl conversations, etc.

small businesses impacted by this.

some kind of guarantee of continuing payroll (including for hourly employees and tipped employees).

likewise there needs to be some kind of aid to businesses that will be impacted.

it will take a shit ton of money, but they just tricked off 1.5T, apparently, the other day, for a 30 min reprieve of the stock market slide.

73. "what do you think about the CARES act?"
In response to Reply # 17

i think this is still the full bill that passed the senate

https://www.politico.com/f/?id=00000171-1246-d270-a773-775f028f0000&nname=playbook-pm&nid=0000015a-dd3e-d536-a37b-dd7fd8af0000&nrid=0000014e-f117-dd93-ad7f-f9179e060001&nlid=964328

i think its a pretty good step.

i originally thought unemployment would be capped at 100% with a max increase of $600 to what the state provides. looks like its $600 on top of what the state gives you even if that puts you over 100%. im not mad at it but i am surprised.

i wonder if they expect companies to increase the salary for the people that are not laid off.

i also worry about some people that need help that might still not be covered under this bill. im thinking people who have hours cut but arent being laid off. or maybe they have had reduced hours for weeks and unemployment will go off that number for their unemployment. i guess the $600 would probably cover that. what about people on family leave? that is usually only a percentage of their pay, will this help them?

i do think people and companies need to be encouraged as much as possible to stay home. i think the bill does that to some degree. not sure if there is anything in there to incentivize companies to push people to work from home.

In response to Reply # 73

https://www.nytimes.com/article/coronavirus-stimulus-package-questions-answers.html

it answered some of my questions. it made me doubt one.

"Would this income disqualify me from any other programs?

Maybe. The additional $600 benefit would count as income when determining eligibility for means-tested programs, except for Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program, known as CHIP."

i thought i read in the bill that it would not count as income for any of those programs.

future b/c a one-time deal ain't gonna do it.

i think it was what could get done at the time, but it is FAR from what was needed. the original dem plan of 2k / month for a few months is more like what's needed.

and it don't mean shit if people don't get a moratorium / reprieve on rent and mortgage.

if we don't have them for now, they need to be created in the event there's a 2nd wave to this. (if it subsides during the summer and comes back in the fall).

In response to Reply # 2

anyone have a plan in case a family member comes down with it? Like, they’re not “hospital sick” just need to be quarantined from the rest of the family.

mother says, we’re using the garbage.
me: “no bathroom tho”
her: “go outside, behind the garage”

that’s our plan lol
thank God the weather’s warming up...

he's finishing his sr year (graduation pushed to the summer). finishing up his stuff online.

my daughter and her fiance live about 25 min away, but we haven't seen them since this jumped off. talk every day via phone, though.

my son and his fiance and our grandson... they are in va, about 3 hrs away. that hurts. saw them in person last on valentines day when our grandson was born. haven't been able to see them in person since then. they distancing in place w/ future MiL, but moving into apt this week. we see them on video chat.

my mom is up in nj. i be telling her to stay put. she mostly be doing it. my 2 uncles are up there, too.

if any of us here get it, we got room in the crib to iso somebody. but my wife is most vulnerable (high blood pressure). if somebody that's not her, i'm gonna have to be the primary provider. she can't get it. we basically stayin and prayin.

A few years ago I moved to Charlotte and left my home to my parents. They’re older and can’t keep up with the maintenance (other than gardening). Now that I’m back, we’re going to gut the place to make room for everyone...just in case.

My son's high school track season is on hold and could possibly be cancelled but he is still required to do his daily workouts. so we are either running the trails and/or e-biking across town or something else. Last night we went to a track field and ran a couple laps to maintain his conditioning.
It sucks cause it's his first year has a high schooler running track, he wanted to shine. It's cool though, I get to this time with him and keep my health in check, lol.

edit: this reminds me that we have to buy some good bikes so convenient to get around..

South African detective show starring Pearl Thusi. Did feel a bit unfinished though, they need to drop a season 2 asap or they should have had a longer first season.

Started Undergorund for the first time (Hulu). That first episode has me IN. But I think I'm going to not binge it, so it lasts longer.

Already rewatched the first season on Russian Doll on Netflix too and three documentaries in the past few days :/

Roger Guenveur Smith did such an amazing job with Rodney

POWERFUL PERFORMANCE

I was blown away by his earlier huey p one man show, and brings it here too

...out of curiosity, I watched LA92 to compare how accurate his performance was...

Seeing the real images made it all the more impactful

Can’t believe we lived through that, and nothing changed.

weekly one hr medical drama. the twist is that it's based off of the story of a real doctor who took over a public hospital in nyc and struggles w/ trying to find out of the box solutions to our effed up medical system. very good ensemble cast.

A Million Little Things (ABC) - another weekly drama, also in it's second season. about a group of friends. main dude (the hub of all their friendships) commits suicide in the first ep , or they start with the immediate aftermath. they explore a lot of stuff about relationships, depression, etc. not quite as tear jerky as This Is Us, but its a good show. and 'Shawn' from Psyche is on there (james roday). and dude from Grimm.

those are pretty cool regular tv shows that would be worth bingeing if you got extra time. also, For Life, the joint 50 produced about the Black con who took and passed the bar while in jail is pretty compelling. Law drama + a quest type deal. Pretty well acted and written.

oh, almost forgot, All Rise - another second season show. legal drama about a Black woman judge in LA. i like this a lot, too.

we've only done 429 tests. (b/c of the stupid federal govt).

we're experiencing community spread. gov of OH (?) said that community spread evidences at least 1% infection rate. so if that's correct, with about 2.2m in the metro, that would be around 20k infected.

we're on the front end of the wave (this cell was from folks who went to biogen exec meeting in boston. 5 travelers from there have turned into the 14 or so confirmed now). we had a school teacher pop positive, and also a worker in target. and one of the infected ppl went to the lego exhibit 2 weeks ago.

we haven't blown up yet, but if doubling time is 3 days, we'll be over 100 cases by the end of next week.

we've been allowed to WFH for 2 weeks now, but it's much easier for me to come in (no good place to work AT home, kids, etc.)

plus, it's a small office. usually about 25-30 people here depending on the day.

now it's down to 5 since WFH was granted, so even at the office the 5 of us are social distanced by default.

the closest person to me is 2 cubicle walls and a college 3 pointer away.

and i don't have to actually see anyone face to face to do my job per se.

we're headed there due to this. i told them i wasn't coming in. deal w/ it).

any tips you need, let me know.

main thing is work balance. depending upon the type of work, you may need to have defined stop time.

i like the flexibility.

most of what i do, even when in the office, is interacting w/ remote folks via skype/IM and webex conference calls.

It's so crazy being AT the crib. Today I made baked turkey wings, clocked out for lunch, ate, took a shower, watched NFL Live...then went back to work. They might have to come get me when it's time to go back.

fam. if you salaried, you getting paid for x amount of work. if you giving them x, or x+, it ain't none of they business if you also doing y and z.

it was a very big adjustment when i took this job and had to go back to office life. so much of that shit is unnecessary. the commute. small talk w/ dumbass ppl i can't stand. overhearing ppls personal business and dumb convos. using bathrooms that everybody on the whole floor use.

company i work for had just built a new complex out here with state of the art buildings (trying to be on some mini google) to concentrate their worldwide IT .

there's some stuff where f2f communication has been beneficial, but it moreso creates a gossipy, off the books, political environment. i don't care for that.

do the normal needful. keep your receipts. document all your work. shine. you'll be fine.

I gotta run two laptops, because my primary one is so old that I can't use it to connect remotely (I still need it because it's one of the few computers at company that run software essential to my job)

Spent all day in my sweats and t-shirt and some slippers. Actually got stuff done. We can check on a conference call three times a day, so I can't really fuck around.

I'm a clean freak. So, I somehow had the foresight to stock up on all my favorite cleaning supplies. Between Walmart and Amazon...I got a nice little antibacterial cache. On the food tip, Wifey's Costco/Walmart game is pretty strong. Out in the deep freezer in the garage...we have the MEATS! Went to Walmart last night and our plan was just grab anything we like to eat that was available...just for some insurance. Joint looked like a bomb went off. When the last time you went to the soup isle and it was ALL gone. Like...who was the mufucka to walk up outta there with a case of Campbell's chicken with stars??? On a serious note...that's interesting what you said about companies holding on to workers. I'm blessed to be able to do my whole job in my drawls with ESPN on...some of the folks I work with are contractors and since they aren't employed by the company...they can't take home thousands of dollars in company equipment. Therefore, they ain't gettin checks, right now.

That video of all those people lined up with carts made me feel like we’re all doomed.

Edit: yeah, I really hope we’re right with our forecasting. I know dudes out here talking about 10 percent unemployment, and I really hope they’re wrong. Means more people stayed alive.

latest stuff from a pandemic forecast now saying this could be with us until the vaccine hit - in hopefully 18 mos. that says if US and the rest of the world are able to flatten the curve to the point it don't destroy the whole country, we'll be looking at periodic needs to re-social distance during future flare ups.

The one with the 18 month figure that scared Trump straight. I refuse to read the report itself, because I’m terrified enough as is, but I think there’s reason to be more optimistic than that. They can only calculate death rates as a proportion of known infected cases, and we know a lot of people who are infected don’t ever get diagnosed. At least that’s what I’m telling myself.

>PRACTICAL:
>- how much supplies to have on hand, tips for provisioning,

>closings, business impacts, etc.

Starting last Friday, I really started stocking up. Already had TP so I didn't have to worry about that. Freezer is now full. Got pasta and beans. Got batteries, Advil and Tylenol, and detergent (that was the toughest thing to get). Wife wants to get some soup just in case, but we on-the-under spot was tapped yesterday. We know when the shipments are coming in over there, so we're planning according.

>PLANNING / POLICY:
>- impact on the economy. how long will the impacts be? where
>are the opportunities gonna be? what resources are available?
>strategies for navigating the downtime

Wife and I are both good on that front. I work in the medical device/pharmaceutical industry, so my job isn't going away. Especially with where things are headed on the job. Like, people are still going to have diabetes during and after this whole thing, so I'm secure. Wife is a lawyer, and her firm has plenty of business moving forward (even though it's small).

I have enough shit to keep me busy. Like I said below, I check in three times a day, and I'm about to get an assignment that going to keep me busy with busy-work for a bit.

Plus, i need to schedule time to do my freelance article writing. I'm a bit behind.

>SELF-IMPROVEMENT:
>- learn something? health goals?

I just need to make sure I get outside and walk. I have two dogs and they're apt to drive each other crazy. Long walks around the neighborhood are probably in order.

>NETFLIX AND CHILL:
>- good series to binge, etc., books to read

Man, I'm still backed up on my DVR. Plus to much shit to watch on NetFlix and Prime and Hulu. Probably time to jump on Narcos Mexico.

>OTHER:

I really should take a shower tomorrow.

Her sister in law texted her saying that shes like to see us and then she adds give can do laundry.

Backstory. Bro in law and his wife 2 kids are doing remodeling to their home and are staying in a hotel room. Sis in law is still going to work and kids in day care.

Corona Drama.

Wife said no. She doesn't want people coming close she is so freaked out and is completely against interacting with people for at least 2 weeks.

If a fat guy falls in the woods and there is no one around to see it, do the trees laugh?

meh.

this shit is increasingly apocalyptic.

have we thought about that #45 hates NY, CA already, and that WA has a democratic governor, also. i wouldn't put it past him to slow-walk the federal response to those states just to see people suffer and to feel like he's winning at something.

I might be losing my mind
{no really but, you know}

got all these crazy thoughts running thru my mind. Not sure what to believe. the president’s a cleaver bastard - he’s planted the seed about folks being tired of being home and now seeing celebrities singing and dancing about it. I expect we’ll be hitting the streets soon...

I’m scared as hell of bringing it home to my elderly parts and uncle with COPD...

then, there’s the folks who don’t even think it’s real...

the world is changing right before our eyes...

In response to Reply # 0

im a germaphobe myself, so a lot of the basic cross contamination practices ive been doing for years

when you think on it, how often do any of these businesses get a chance to shut down and deep clean?
sanitize the seating
pull furniture and machines away from the wall to clean behind

ive seen small mom and pop places do it but no national chains outside of Chick-fil-a

could the U.S. use a week yearly to deep clean.

is this something the Federal or State government could assist with economically in terms of lost revenue?

how about 2 weeks? once after summer, the other after christmas before new years

i had a healthcare professional tell me once that the hand sanitizer industry is going to get us in trouble because its replaced hand washing, welp here we are

In a weird, hard-to-articulate way, it's kinda refreshing to see animals seemingly enjoying themselves like this (even if it is at humans' expense)

In response to Reply # 90

https://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2020/04/06/la-has-the-cleanest-air-in-the-world-report-says/

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — With so many people staying at home and off the roads, Los Angeles currently has the cleanest air in the world, according to IQ Air’s live quality city ranking.

Following the issuing of the state-wide “Safe-At-Home” orders, many residents began working from home, lowering the number of commuters on the road.

On March 18, L.A.’s infamous rush-hour traffic was moving 71 percent faster than it usually does on a Wednesday afternoon, The New York Times reported.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, last month L.A. experienced the longest consecutive “good” air days since at least 1980.

Experts say the improvement is also due to fewer planes flying and less ground activity in general.

a small closet in my bedroom. Since moving back I haven’t been able to really unpack because of spacing. My son updated the closet and had me help with the painting. Lord, my body hurts, lol. I’m so out of shape.

while working I finally got the courage to ask him if he thought I was a good mother. I’ve always felt guilty having him so young so what his answer might be scared me. His answer - what I thought...honest. I have a damn good mother and son.

I need motivation to be active...
