"OK Gun Owners...what’s good?"
Mon Mar-09-20 12:42 PM by Dstl1

Anything new? Staying up on your skills? Range time, courses? Got your eye on something? Going to be adding a handgun to go along with the home defense shotgun. I know it’s going to be .45, but haven’t decided on a platform, yet. Seriously leaning towards a 1911, though. Questions, comments, concerns...let’s rap.

Got a HD shotgun already, but shotgun ammo is much more expensive than .223, plus the low recoil would make it a lot more fun to shoot.

or stick with the same thing? I went out shooting with a buddy, this weekend. We fired various handguns and his Mossberg. I shot a 3 inch slug, for the first time...joint had some punch to it. Never even considered slug for the shotty due to the fact that I only use it for HD. It was fun to shoot, though.

Haven't shot the slugs yet, but I heard they kick.

The buck shells are 8 pellet ("reduced recoil"), 9 pellet and 10 pellet loads. Don't notice much difference between these in the 500.

It's the recoil and price on shotgun shells that puts me off a bit. ~$1 / shot kinda sucks.

but he said he was gonna bring a few different calibers, so I could get a feel. He brought a Beretta in 9mm, a Springfield XD in 9mm and an M&P .40. So we blasting through ammo, doing our thing (I loved the Beretta, by the way...had the crimson trace red dot on it)...and he’s got this dumb as grin on his face. He goes back into his truck, pulls out a case, pops it open and hands me a Kimber match grade 1911. Joint was two tone, wood grips...beautiful. It shot like a dream, too. So that being said, Kimber is up there on my list. I also really like the Ruger sr1911 and the Springfield XDM full size. I don’t care for the compact joints, especially since I don’t plan to conceal carry.

I can't wait to take it out to the range with my boys in a few weeks. I also just picked up two new Anderson AR Lowers, thinking of building a 10.5" AR for the home defense. The other one I'm just going to hold on to, I only bought it cause the lowers were on sale.

Shotgun for home defense you say? May I suggest the Remington 870 with the Magpul package. It's a really nice shotgun and I enjoy the Magpul stock. It's the perfect length for in-home use and I believe it's a 7+1 so you'll have more than enough shells.

I have a Benelli Nova Tactical for the house and as much as I like it, it's just slightly under what I wanted and ended up buying a mag extension which I would probably just preferred getting that Remington.

I think my next two purchases are a new 9mm and a Remington Semi-Auto for three gun.

I'm thinking of buying a whole rifle (vs. building one) and I see Andersons at pretty good prices, as well as a few other brands.

Thinking about picking up a Ruger or S&W AR as a starter.

Problem with building with their lowers is they typically like to use their proprietary parts (lower kits, buffer tube, etc) you can typically use a different upper. But other than that they're pretty good. Not sure if I'd buy a full AR from them. I'd got with Juggernaut Tactical, or Aero Precision (preferred) there are few others out there that make inexpensive AR's. Check out pew pew tactical, they're pretty good with reviews and insight.

I just so happen to catch it on a closeout sale somewhere. I wasn't about to drop $600 or so on that. I'm still not willing to drop close to $2K for an M2 or M4 so I'm sticking with Remington for my semi-auto when I get it. At least it's under $1K before taxes and fees.

If you read pew pew, then you should also check out LuckyGunner. Given they're problematic since they were in that lawsuit a while back over their ammo sales, they still do good reviews on best home defense and CCQ firearms.

I live in Louisiana so gun laws are not an issue. I am looking for a gun that I can have as a deterrent that my wife can operate as well. I have never been a gun owner before and am looking for something that is relatively easy to use but also has a decent amount of safety features. I plan to take classes and eventually get my concealed carry license.

What do you recommend?

The recoil of 9mm isn't to bad, as long as you stay away from "pocket" sized guns. If you have kids, buy a small lockbox/safe to store it in. Safeties help, but following these 4 rules is really the best safety: https://concealednation.org/2013/11/the-4-rules-of-gun-safety/

Semi-Auto is starting to get tougher to purchase them with manual safeties as more and more are moving to the Glock/Springfield XD model of Double Action Only with no manual safeties.

But Smith & Wesson make an MP that has some Manual Features and has loaded indicators. Then there's the Bretta 92F; it still has a manual safety which these are both come in 9mm.

Or you could go with a CZ, they have manual safeties but are made up of steel so they are quite heavy, which could be a good or bad thing depending.

Mossberg, Remington & Stevens/Savage.

Don't depend on sound to stop intruders. And if I had to pop somoeone breaking in to my house to presumably do harm to my family, IIDGAF about the cleanup.

Edit: My lady literally flinches when I rack the pump in the same room as her.

also agree on the cocking of one isn't going to necessarily stop an intruder. And as far as clean up, it depends on what type of Ammo you use. Buck is going to spread and make a mess, a slug will make a mess but it's just one large mass so it'll make a whole.

Another issue with a shotgun in the house is thin walls that may connect to another room, so you gotta be careful not to hit the kid's room or whatnot.

My build is a BCM upper and Aero Precision lower, and I got a prism sight instead of a red dot because of my astigmatism (some minor starbusting when I use red dots). Did some benchrest shooting to zero in the sight, and I was good to go once everything was adjusted properly. Also did some pistol shooting of my concealed carry gun (CZ PCR) just to not be rusty.

Ammo prices are high, and I've been able to get some "deals" for 9mm for around 17-18 cents per round, but things are probably only going to get worse as we get closer to the election.

A friend's .45 was the first gun I ever shot. Really fun although definitely more notable recoil than a 9mm. There was some Speer Gold Dot defense ammo that I was able to get for 40 cents a round, so I stocked up on that. Decent price considering everything.

as well so some Hornady. I agree, there is definitely a difference in the recoil. With my .45, it’s more of a solid push, backwards. The 9mm that I have fired (Ruger, Kimber 1911), were more of an upward snap. I guess I’d attribute that to the .45 round having more energy, but “slow”...while the 9 is a sonic round.

Gotta check if the ranges are open around here (all indoor, unfortunately). Stripped lower + Magpul kit + PSA upper & a red dot.

Ammo prices & availability suck right now, but are probably only gonna get worse.

The range in my city just opened back up a few weeks ago. It's indoors, so I could only get some practice at 25 yards. The AR-15 was so much fun. After zeroing my optic, hitting the center target was a breeze at that distance. I definitely see the appeal of an AR-15 for home defense given its ease. There's an outdoor range about 45 minutes from here that I'll try to visit this weekend to get some more practice at longer distances. I used Raise.com to buy some discounted gift cards for Cabelas, and I was able to get 600 rounds of brass 5.56 for a little less than 30 cents a round. I kind of wish I had bought more.

Trying to find a Glock or Colt mag lower for a good price. Rather go 9mm for the short barrel because 556 would be way too noisy w/ huge fireballs in a > 12" barrel, and suppressors + tax stamp costs too much right now.

Might also pick up a 10/22 plinker, but only if I can find a few bricks of 22lr at a good price first. Want to teach mini-me to shoot if I can get some range time.

Good luck, it's few and far between and when it's around it's pricey. The best bet is if you live in a state where you can ship it to yourself buy online. Even if you cant buying online and shipping to an FFL is a good idea.

at last check, some places are charging somewhere at $0.40 to $0.50 for certain calibers. I stocked up back in Jan and Feb before RONA and then a bit here and there so I had some. I'm currently at 2k rounds of 9mm and 5.56 and .223. short on 12 gauge buck since it shows up and disappears.

This fucking election cycle and Rona is really killing it for me. I typically sport shoot and do 3-Gun but now I'm just sitting rationing out ammo when I go out to shoot.

Look at the reviews for each shop, as well as the ammo manufacturer (some sell reloads). Get brass (vs. steel) ammo. Most of the big shops like bass pro and academy sell out fast online.

If you have local shops and big chains that sell ammo, swing past a few of those. If they have purchasing limits then the stock might tend to stick around longer. Everything's gonna be pricey now tho.

I put a few orders in from 3 different shops....we'll see which ones ship and how long....

I set up an alert for 0.38/round and got a hit within 1 hr.

.38/round was the cheapest I found and .58/round was the highest. I didn't know what I was doing so no telling on what the quality is lol...

any of these ring a bell?

Remington UMC 9mm 115gr Flat Nose Enclosed Base Ammo - Box of 50 $18.99

NEW Brass 9mm 115 Grain FMJ Norma Range & Training – QTY 50 $25.47

9mm 124 Gr TMJ Ruag Ammotec - QTY 50 $27.69

if you have an AR platform be careful buying any 5.56 or .223 that's Wolf Ammo, the Russian stuff isn't very good.

You can also go to Reddit, some of the firearm subreddits have good info out there on where to get ammo. Like flip said BassPro is a good place, also check you're local sporting goods store and find out when they get shipments and go on those days (early) so you can grab some. they mostly do have limits which is why it's better to buy in bulk online.

anyway for the past year or so, a retired captain who once work for the Bush/Cheney admin and a sniper for the army has been training me how to fire a Remington rifle 700 series w/ a scope.

they were trying to teach, and my mom played along a bit until it was showtime then she lit it up. kinda freaked me out tbh. i'm not actually sure what she even did in the Navy beyond her placements (San Diego, Iceland and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba) because she's very tight-lipped about it.
