I seent this and laughed because two people are making a silly math error. And how it got past both of them AND a team of producers/assistants is beyond me.

and I really think it's fear that keeps people from doing the checking.
there are very few people who think they stubbornly keep to any idea they believe in and yet lots of people who think others are stubbornly proceeding with ideas that are wrong.
there's gotta be at least a few false self-ids in there, why wouldn't you be one of them?

... it's only after I've doubled down, know what I mean ? LOL like in the moment in some cases, specifically in heated arguments/debates, I dig my heels in hard unless someone literally puts like an article in front of me that proves me wrong with hard evidence.
But then later with hindsight, when I'm calm and out of the moment, I'll reach out and admit my mistake(s) if it's warranted. And I really try to be diligent about this because I request so much accountability on the parts of people I argue with about things.

lol for this dude not to fact check at all and just run with a reckless & wrong tweet on LIVE AIR of a major broadcast is basically peak Brian Williams incompetence.

Probably lying to themselves, too.
I'm pretty sure this is a named cognitive bias in the psychology world.
Like most cognitive biases, you can do somewhat better if you recognize the issue and start looking for it in yourself. But you'll never fully get rid of it.
As for me, it depends on the error. I do elaborate algebra at a chalkboard every day, so multiple times a week some young Bernie Bro college student tells me that I misplaced a factor of 2 or something. And thankfully there really isn't any way around admitting my error. Feynman once described math as (paraphrasing) "A tool that humans use to keep from fooling themselves."
On bigger things, or things that are more vague or open to interpretation, I'm sure I'm not as good. Scientists, on scientific questions, are not particularly better than anyone else in this regard. Max Planck said "Science progresses one funeral at a time." Meaning: most individual scientists will typically hold onto wrong ideas for their entire lives. But thankfully the next generation of scientists (or other members of the same generation, coming to things fresh) can conceptualize the arguments better and the ideas with less real support will fall out of favor.
