"How Do You Want It (Tupac) is a really weird song"
Thu Feb-27-20 02:49 PM by Selah

verse 1 and half of 2: sex song

Love the way you activate your hips and push your ass out
Got a nigga wantin' it so bad I'm 'bout to pass out
Wanna dig you, and I can't even lie about it
Baby just alleviate your clothes, time to fly up out it
Catch you at a club, oh shit you got me fiendin'
Body talkin' shit to me but I can't comprehend the meaning
Now if you wanna roll with me, then here's your chance
Doin eighty on the freeway, police catch me if you can
Forgive me I'm a rider, still I'm just a simple man
All I want is money, fuck the fame I'm a simple man
Mr. International, playa with the passport
Just like Aladdin bitch, get you anything you ask for
It's either him or me, champagne, Hennessy
A favorite of my homies when we floss, on our enemies
Witness as we creep to a low speed, peep what a hoe need
Puff some mo' weed, funk, ya don't need
Approachin' hoochies with a passion, been a long day
But I've been driven by attraction in a strong way
Your body is bangin' baby I love it when you flaunt it
Time to give it to daddy nigga now tell me how you want it
(chorus)
Tell me is it cool to touch?
Did you think I come to talk am I a fool or what?
Positions on the floor it's like erotic
Ironic 'cause I'm somewhat psychotic
I'm hittin' switches on bitches like I been fixed with hydraulics
Up and down like a roller coaster
I'm up inside ya, I ain't quittin' 'til the show is over
'Cause I'ma rider in and out just like a robbery
I'll probably be a freak and let you get on top of me
Get her rockin' these
Nights full of Alize, a livin' legend
You ain't heard about these niggas play these Cali days

then the hard sweve into some political stuff (mid verse):

You'se a motherfucker
Instead of tryin' to help a nigga you destroy a brother
Worse than the others, Bill Clinton, Mr. Bob Dole
You're too old to understand the way the game is told
You're lame so I gotta hit you with the hot facts
Want some on lease? I'm makin' millions, niggas top that
They wanna censor me, they'd rather see me in a cell
Livin' in Hell, only a few of us'll live to tell
Now everybody talkin 'bout us I could give a fuck
Like we the first one to bomb and cuss
Nigga tell me how you want it

then finish it off with some gangsta sh*t for verse 3:

Raised as a youth, tell the truth I got the scoop
On how to get a bulletproof, because I jumped from the roof
Before I was a teenager, mobile phone, SkyPager
Gang rules, I'm livin' major, my adversaries
Is lookin' worried, they paranoid of gettin' buried
One of us gon' see the cemetary
My only hope to survive if I wish to stay alive
Gettin' high, see the demons in my eyes, before I die
I wanna live my life and ball, make a couple million
And then I'm chillin' fade 'em all
These taxes got me crossed up and people tryin' to sue me
Media is in my business and they actin' like they know me
But I'mma mash out, and peel out
I'm with it quick that's quick to whip that fuckin' steel out
Yeah nigga it's some new shit so better get up on it
When ya see me tell a nigga how ya want it
How do you want it?

truly all over the place....

most def a jam though (an odd strip club anthem if there ever was one)

he's asking you, the listener, HOW DO YOU WANT IT aka who do you want Tupac to be?

do you want the Lothario (verse 1)?

do you want the political, pro black rapper (verse 2)?

do you want the gangster (verse 3)?

its right there in the song.

i think that's an interesting take but there are too many 90's mainstream rap songs that don't stay on topic and hit different topics in different verses

he was taking in the press and from music fans.

it was either he's too sexual, he's too political, he's too gansgster.

so he said eff it, i'm gonna put it all in one song y'all will love (cuz the hook is fire and as long as the hook hits, ur good).

I really don't remember the talk around when it dropped, but living in LA at the time it was on the radio ALL the time. Never got if there was a deeper meaning. And I was a lyrical miracle lovin' fool at the time.

Maybe I was just sleeping on Pac's meta game.

I wanna believe this cause it sounds so good, but absent evidence I'm inclined to lean this way. Especially considering the 2nd verse was half "here's how I fuck" and half "btw fuck Clinton and shit"

was Tupac known for sex songs?

not questioning his chick-magnet image, but beyond I get around wasn't the mostly overtly sexual stuff on this same record?

Yea it was inferred just cuz the conversation started re: "sex songs" so I made that leap.

But yea you're right re: their feelings for eachother whether sexual or not. They both talked about it a lot obviously. Pretty cool and as you said, beautiful.

I always took it as a reference to the title.. He's expressing himself to you in different ways. He's asking how do you want it.. how can he relate to you? It starts off as and mostly sounds like a sex song because sex sells. It changes because he's not only speaking to the ladies.. Pac appeals to many different audiences. He's also talking about censorship/language/content and he's talking about some street shit/sending a message to his enemies (another favorite topic of his).

It's not totally alone in terms of strip club songs that touch on politics though.. Don't forget "Lapdance" by N.E.R.D.

He always wrote in the moment which is why he contradicted himself often from time to time.

That song, like stated above, was him switching between those personalities in one song.

People always said they didn’t like that song but I always thought it was dope.

Makaveli is clearly his best album imo

It’s often played on the Black oldies station during the rush hour drive mix on the way home.

Never been a much of a Pac fan but this song and Keep Your Head Up are my shit.

Just heard KYHU the other day on my way to pickup my girls from daycare and realized it’s prolly one of the best songs ever when it comes to showing women respect.

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

Some say the blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice
I say the darker the flesh then the deeper the roots
I give a holler to my sisters on welfare
Tupac cares, if don't nobody else care
And uh, I know they like to beat ya down a lot
When you come around the block brothas clown a lot
But please don't cry, dry your eyes, never let up
Forgive but don't forget, girl keep your head up
And when he tells you you ain't nuttin' don't believe him
And if he can't learn to love you, you should leave him
'Cause sista you don't need him
And I ain't tryin' to gas ya up, I just call 'em how I see 'em
You know it makes me unhappy (What's that)
When brothas make babies, and leave a young mother to be a pappy
And since we all came from a woman
Got our name from a woman and our game from a woman
I wonder why we take from our women
Why we rape our women, do we hate our women?
I think it's time to kill for our women
Time to heal our women, be real to our women
And if we don't we'll have a race of babies
That will hate the ladies, that make the babies
And since a man can't make one
He has no right to tell a woman when and where to create one
So will the real men get up
I know you're fed up ladies, but keep your head up
Keep ya head up, ooh, child, things are gonna get easier
Keep ya head up, ooh, child, things'll get brighter
Keep ya head up, ooh, child, things are gonna get easier
Keep ya head up, ooh, child, things'll get brighter
Aiyyo, I remember Marvin Gaye, used to sing to me
He had me feelin' like black was tha thing to be
And suddenly tha ghetto didn't seem so tough
And though we had it rough, we always had enough
I huffed and puffed about my curfew and broke the rules
Ran with the local crew, and had a smoke or two
And I realize momma really paid the price
She nearly gave her life, to raise me right
And all I had to give her was my pipe dream
Of how I'd rock the mic, and make it to tha bright screen
I'm tryin' to make a dollar out of fifteen cents
It's hard to be legit and still pay your rent
And in the end it seems I'm headin' for tha pen
I try and find my friends, but they're blowin' in the wind
Last night my buddy lost his whole family
It's gonna take the man in me to conquer this insanity
It seems tha rain'll never let up
I try to keep my head up, and still keep from gettin' wet up
You know it's funny when it rains it pours
They got money for wars, but can't feed the poor
Said it ain't no hope for the youth and the truth is
It ain't no hope for tha future
And then they wonder why we crazy
I blame my mother, for turning my brother into a crack baby
We ain't meant to survive, 'cause it's a setup
And even though you're fed up
Huh, ya got to keep your head up
Keep ya head up, ooh, child, things are gonna get easier
Keep ya head up, ooh, child, things'll get brighter
Keep ya head up, ooh, child, things are gonna get easier
Keep ya head up, ooh, child, things'll get brighter
And uh
To all the ladies havin' babies on they own
I know it's kinda rough and you're feelin' all alone
Daddy's long gone and he left you by ya lonesome
Thank the Lord for my kids, even if nobody else want 'em
'Cause I think we can make it, in fact, I'm sure
And if you fall, stand tall and comeback for more
'Cause ain't nothin' worse than when your son
Wants to kno' why his daddy don't love him no mo'
You can't complain you was dealt this
Hell of a hand without a man, feelin' helpless
Because there's too many things for you to deal with
Dying inside, but outside you're looking fearless
While the tears, is rollin' down your cheeks
Ya steady hopin' things don't all down this week
'Cause if it did, you couldn't take it, and don't blame me
I was given this world I didn't make it
And now my son's gettin' older and older and cold
From havin' the world on his shoulders
While the rich kids is drivin' Benz
I'm still tryin' to hold on to my survivin' friends
And it's crazy, it seems it'll never let up, but
Please, you got to keep your head up

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

hook in modern century sung by High Point, NC niggas named K-ci and Jojo

How do you want it?
How do you feel?
Comin' up as a nigga in the cash game
I'm livin' in the fast lane, I'm for real (2x)

Most of us know someone or were/am this person in the hook, who's multifaceted.
I know a chick who's the team lead of Eastern Star organization, yet she works at a strip club and boots for the army reserve on the weekends. How do you want it?

Visiting the folks, sitting on the 60 freeway listening to a throwback cali rap mix on power 106 it dropped between Mac 10 and Dogg Pound and it finally hit me.

I need to live there. Just the fact that they play DPG regularly alone makes it the place for me. Everytime I'm out there and get a rental I'm like, why don't I just stay out here lol.

my folks still there.

365 bbq weather.

beaches.

fresh produce.

When Kobe passed I said to my wife, I wish I was in California right now, it would have been sad as fuck but it would have been done in a way only LA knows how to do it.

I'm kinda ready to go back home after 10 years in SF and about 5 in NYC but I think to make it so I won't get itchy to move again I'd have to be able to be on both coasts.

it covers the Biggie - Pac feud and it provides a lot of insight into things that have been missed or forgotten with time.

in it I learned how much of a loose cannon Pac was. I didnt know how paranoid he was and how he even went at Dre for not being down.

the show wasn't good because he kept stopping the show. after every song, he'd stop and start complaining about the sound. people didn't like that.

he also was about to release the album with dear momma. he was doing songs from that, but nobody knew them. crowd got restless and started telling him the show was wack.

him and somebody were talking shit between songs. he jumped off the stage and started fighting someone in the crowd. not sure the outcome as I left as soon as I could.
