Which I thought was a decent concept being it was a Volvo and the new XC40 is a nice lil crossover. Nissan doesn't have a desirable line up to even make this worth trying out

it includes insurance which i guess is around $100 per month, probably more??

do you pay for gas? it says you can switch cars daily, i would think they come fully fueled?

the idea of having a pick up for the days you need it is cool but uh $600 a month for that???

i wonder who they think will sign up for this and who actually will.

Was thinking about copping a used one when I finish with my Bimmer. I see that sales are low and not much has changed since they introduced the 370z back in 2010.

I definitely won't be subscribing. That's crazy!

but i guess you could switch cars when you're close to the threshold
even with repairs and maintenance, i don't think that a new/fairly new car costs would amount to $699 per month

if you have subpar credit this might be appealing, tho ill advised
for business purposes perhaps, if you're writing this off?
i'm sure this could make sense for someone

never really owning anything is the consumer wave

this business model is not for me, is not geared towards me

it'll take off at some point because folks are buying fewer cars.

cars are a huge debt for most folks. with ride services, especially those that won't need drivers, subscription looks like the next wave.

Palpable...
I think Cadillac already backed out...but Volvo is still going...
I think one of the other luxury car mfrs was doing it, or preparing to do it also...

>it'll take off at some point because folks are buying fewer
>cars.

Oh this car sharing model is DEF. gonna be the wave at some point...but I just don't see Nissan starting that wave with their lineup AND at this price tier.

>cars are a huge debt for most folks. with ride services,

>like the next wave.

I'd have to look closer...but I don't see the specifics on contract terms. I'm sure they are gonna want to lock you in to a minimum contract length.

I'm sure there will be some lock-in time. I'm thinking something short term. like a year or less. has to be shorter than leases and def shorter than outright buying.

if you dont have a car and have limited monthly income what is your best bet in a city that doesnt have great public transit?

if you get 3/4k refund, do you cop a used car for that amount? use a portion of it as a down payment on a more expensive car and save the rest for the monthly payments?

if you get that cheap used car what models are you looking at?

Or if it's gotta be a car; Used car hands down.Hyundai or Kia probably best balance between
reliability and affordability.
Ford next up after that...
And older model Toyota or Honda is the best choice but will come at a premium....

My personal choice would be motorcycle though.....
My most economical commuting years where when I rode motorcycles...

it automatically adjusted to my zipcode...scary

is it really the best option to put most/all your money into a car thats under $5k for your only mode of transportation?

i think its what most people would do but i had a thought yesterday on if it might make more sense to use $1 to 1.5k on a down payment, get something in the $8k range and use the remaining balance as a reserve for payments.

car notes for used cars can be higher. the interest on used tends to be higher than new cars. even for those with good credit. plus, depending on the age of the car, the banks may limited the number the terms of the loan, which could mean an even higher note.

I'm for not having a note unless you can truly afford it. they really handcuff your finances each month. if you can do a note, something that's 4-5 years old would make sense.

otherwise, getting a beater is the move.

the more, the merrier for sure. but that range should keep you good for non-emergencies too.

find a mechanic you trust or a shop that'll do pre-sale checks on used cars. one that's not affiliated with the seller/dealer. that can give you a bit of confidence in the car.

and when you make the purchase, get as much done as you can on routine maintenance. tune ups, oil changes, etc. whomever does that work will likely tell you if something else needs to be worked on.

how do you find a mechanic that will do pre-sale checks?

im not the one buying by the way. thinking of what advice to give someone else made me realize how much i do things based on intuition. i definitely do my own research and make the decision based on what i learned in the research but in the end its just a feeling of what i think will work out best for my budget.

just googling for it can be helpful to find chains that might do that pre-sale overview. also sites like yourmechanic.com and others, depending on where you live. they give upfront pricing and come to you.

I feel you. most things I do are also done on vibe. sometimes the timing doesn't work out to go through a whole vetting process. rushing tends to land in bad decisions so I try to take my time.

It’s our 2nd car.... but I wouldn’t have a problem relying on it as our primary either.
Purchased it with well over 130,000 miles on it.

So yeah, I think it’s very reasonable and doable to get a reliably used car in the price range you’re talking.

IMO, stick to Toyota for maximum reliability

<$2k - you're likely going to need to be seriously handy, or have a hook up at a shop, to keep the car on the road. There are some reliable diamonds in the rough, but you're likely getting a car that will need some expensive service in the not too distant future. Chance of getting stranded is high so you only buy this level of car as a spare/luxury or in an emergency where you absolutely need a car (but you should still be saving towards the next tier car).

3-5k - you can find something that should be reliable for a couple years of worry free service.

5+ - you can easily find a reliable beater that will last a long time. I spent $7500 on a Camry 10 years ago and I'm just now getting ready to retire it. Took it from 100k mi to 250k... its probably got another 50k to go on the engine but I don't want to spend 3k to keep a 1k car on the road

With the quality of many of todays cars, you really dont need to spend more than 10k to get aq great, long term car. Above this, it;s all about style and getting the latest tech, which are definitely nice to have but unnecessary if funds are tight.

In response to Reply # 47

didnt see any toyotas in the range. only a honda from 96.

there's a 2007 volvo s40 with 150k miles. i feel that would be good but i dont have experience with volvos. theres a couple other s40s 2006-2008 with miles a bit above or below as well. i think getting any of them for around $3k would be good.

i think the only other alternatives were sonatas with as many miles and only slightly newer.

not much selection under $5k.

id definitely recommend them over the volvo, even if they were at 200k miles.

slim pickings right now though. maybe after more people get their refunds there will be more to choose from. i figure a lot of people will start trading in or look to sell their older cars.

it might also be an option to look at american cars. they'll likely be cheaper. they're not garbage like they used to be.

i'd much rather some sort of unlimited Uber service (and not that Ride Pass nonsense), but i i'll wait till it's autonomous cuz i feel like the drivers would get jerked in that deal.

Everything's a subscription service.

Part of the reason why I resist it. People are so disposessed that they can easily be suckered into it.

Not Dr. Claw.

Parking and ins could be $500 a month itself.

Otherwise wtf

where you can just park anywhere on the streets for free.
And damn, y'alls insurance be high like THAT???
My monthly insurance is like $128 and a portion of that is my life insurance monthly premium. I also roll with a $250 deductible and have pretty high uninsured coverage limits... So I could DEF. get it much lower if I wanted

Home Owner's, Car, Life, Personal Liability Umbrella.
We get billed monthly for everything but the Home Owner's.
I guess we could pay yearly lump sum if we wanted to though.
