DMV you're competing with ALL THE PARENTS from within the region for the most part...
And camp registration opens around this time of year so you gotta wait and que up online or in person or via telephone
There are private camps County sponsored camps Camps at private schools that are open to the public Camps at public schools open to county residents and residents from OUTside the county Camps at churches
Logistics is the biggest issue...
We don't have charter schools in Arlington. The camps offered by the County parks & rec are held at the local schools and a few churches by outside contractors...
Ideally we get into a local camp via the Arlington County registration...but there are more kids than camp spaces for any given week...

I really am so tired of work being the center of everything. We can't do anything with our kids because of work. I am really close to leaving the working world and I can't wait because I am not going to keep chasing this ridiculous culture of competing to pay for some bullshit ass experience that I could do myself if given the time.
I put my kid in camp for 3 weeks and she enjoyed it but for the most part it is low rate daycare.

This is probably the most depressing part of it all.... The money is a PITA...but I get it...watching kids takes time & money and resources for these camps so I don't even trip over the costs most of the time if it's a quality program... But damn...it'd be great to be able to take a month off to just kick it with my kids...

This too... I'd be all for year round school... Shooot...why not just have year round school & rotate in a different group of teachers for the summer months??

Right now it’s just ballet.
But there will be art
There will be sports (hopefully)
Prolly join the Y soon.

My son is a teen now, so the days of sun and fun day camps are done, and the pre-college sessions and sports camps are here. The boy is doing three different week long camps this summer; a lacrosse camp, and film camp, and a college exposure summer session.
I thought I had more time, but after going on the registration sites for two of them, I saw limited spots still available...four months out!
So I had to scrape up the cash for two, and cross my fingers that there are still spots available when I have the money for the third.
Next summer we're pushing for him to get a summer job!

When he was younger, camp was more about keeping him safe and occupied over the summer. There was a wide variety of options and prices. We are Y members so Y day camp and a week of sleepover camp was always the default. The county dept. of recreation had camps, various churches...etc. The Y all-sports camp was very affordable, since my wife taught classes there, and we might spring for a pricier robotics or art camp one of the weeks.
As he got older camp became less about day care, he's old enough to be home alone, and more about keeping him active, fostering his interests and exposing him to things. That's where it gets harder and $$$.
When you're looking for a specific camp held during a specific week, scheduling becomes an issue. For example, my son plays varsity lacrosse, so lacrosse camp is encouraged. There are two lacrosse camps being held in our area. One is at Georgia Tech...pretty affordable, but conflicts with a family trip. The other is Nike Elite, which is actually close to the house, at a better time...but twice as expensive. The other options are hour drives away, at least.
