That’s because the televised trial is captured by Senate camera operators and NOT a news network as is typically done in congressional hearings. The GOP blocked outside media cameras from the trial to deliberately make watching as dry and and uneventful as posssible.

I fucking hate politicians. Every action and posture has an agenda behind it.

no matter how much sense the dems make and how idiotic the cons arguments are they will just keep going for the allotted time. maybe something unexpected happens in the vote but i dont see what good i get out of listening to the same arguments over and over again.

ill keep an eye on it but probably not tuning in again today.

It's been nearly impossible to beat an incumbent in the modern era.

You have to go all the way back to '92 when Clinton beat H.W. Bush - and it's only happened 5 times in history.

Since this Impeachment trial is essentially a formality (an inevitable acquittal is coming) - the efficacy of the proceedings may be judged on whether Trump is re-elected.

Somehow, I don't see Schumer & Schiff being of all that much help when it comes to electoral politics. Schumer is a tired, waning voice in the Senate. His arguments aren't terribly compelling, and he certainly isn't exciting on-the-fence voters to vote against Trump. Schiff - while being impressively meticulous in his methodology - is a technocrat (an effective one at that). In this environment of anti-intellectualism, short form thought, and lack of patience, I don't see how he is going to move the needle for Democrats in 2020 either.

Of course, Impeachment has nothing to do with the election - per se - but everyone knows this has monstrous 2020 electoral implications. After all - this is not a judicial or legal process - it's a political one.

Democrats better know what they're doing with this.

After the Clinton impeachment Republicans failed to gain momentum to earn significant gains in the House - and many pointed to the public’s distaste for the proceedings.

I don’t think this helps Democrats politically, but it is part of their constitutional duty.

All that said, this is a different era and I don’t see anything stopping the Dem momentum if they wise up and support the strongest candidate.

But yeah, it's been a quarter century. Although Trump feels uniquely vulnerable as incumbents go.

But incumbents have a number of losses on the record.

Of course, the "modern era" can be a bit vague so I should've clarified.

It's happened about 4-5 times in the past century or so. It's not an impossible order to topple an incumbent, but certainly a difficult one.

btw: John Quincy Adams is one of the most underrated figures in American history.

i watched some more of it when i got home but didnt keep it on all night.

I watched the whole thing, but I was very high as the night went on. Only way to do it.

But yeah, today starts with the actual opening statements.

Schumer offered to put off consideration of some of his amendments to today. But Mitch was dead set on having his rules agreed to by the end of the session.

Mitch's rules were passed on a party line vote. All of Schumer's amendments failed on party line votes, apart from one Yea vote by Susan Collins on the most technical one.

so i read its 24 hours split into three days for opening statements. thats for both, so each 12 hours right? house will have all of today and half of tomorrow then the defense?

i will watch today. not sure if ill make it though all of it but i will try.

Not that both sides will use all that time. The house managers might. But judging from yesterday, the Trump team will probably just rant about Benghazi for a couple hours and call it a day.
