In the song 'Unaccommodating'

"I'm contemplating yelling 'bombs away' on the game / Like I'm outside of an Ariana Grande concert waiting."

Controversial Em lyrics are nothing new, but this isn't a good at all

The fact that someone would even suggest outrage for this line is proof.

and I hate it this outrage culture.

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

add the album cover and I don’t think anyone can listen to this and get offended.

It’s like going to a horror movie and getting upset because their is horror.

That's hard to hold onto with age, but I really think he could have a lot of fun if he just dialed the performative anger back 30%. I stumbled over this bit I wrote about him after MMLP2 and it really resonated with me:

"For the rest of the LP, in attempting to return to the dark, sarcastic tone of Marshall Mathers LP, Eminem approaches it through the humorless affect of a 12-step addict who always found being an asshole the perfect escape from his own insecurities. In doing so, Eminem reveals once and for all that his success owes as much to timeliness as talent."

Eminem without the Bass Brothers and Dre just feels like self-parody too often.

And Em is handling a lot of his own production.

In response to Reply # 0

1. Who are the producers?
2. How many Eminem beats?
3. How many Skyler Grey hooks? Or hooks in that lane?
4. How many songs does he scream rap on?
5. Is he riding the beats?
6. How many “motivational” songs does he scream rap on while saying all kinds of foul and weird shit, with a hook sung by Em?

If I don’t like the answers to these questions, I’m not listening. Thanks for your time.

.. interesting music anymore. It's all bland, somber production, with Em playing verbal gymnastics and rapping really fast and/or angry. Technically it's wildly impressive, what he's able to do with his pen. But it's exhausting and boring musically.

The problem I see is that this isn't *purely* a "for the spitters" album, as he makes a few plays for bigger, arena-styled songs. So... Stepdad has a dope ass beat and he raps his ass off, until Angry PeeWee screams the chorus. So that's a mixed bag.

But this shit is a rap clinic, and definitely not for everyone. I don't think he has the overall ear of a Jay or 50, or the project window sentiment of Nas.

But this is some pure spitter shit, by and large, even with the attempts to do something greater.

Yea he always kinda does that tho doesn't he ?

Anyway to your point about the beats working for what he's doing - that's kind of exactly my point. Sure, these beats give room for Em to spit but the beats are still boring IMO for the most part. Like in his heyday, even on his "diss songs" and/or straight spitting songs, the beats were strong and interesting, while still giving him room to flex. I'm thinking of "The Sauce" and that type of song.

Yea again that's fine. I just wish the beats had more variety.

even someone like Thought has a hard time making good songs by himself.

It’s truly an art form to spit and edit it down to where you get a dope 16 and a good hook.

I think this is what makes guys like Kendrick special.

I don’t listen to Em for replay value.. I listen for dope lines and dexterity and I guess I’ve gotten better with approaching rappers like him without holding them to the same standard as a Jay.

It’s not something I will have in rotation.

Like I know Em has always been polarizing for everyone for various reasons but IMO in the first part of his career, he was obviously a glorified battle rapper, but he was still able to make interesting and good songs even if he was still clearly just rappity rapping for the most part. The production was a huge part of that but he also flowed with said beats way better at that time.

His last few albums the beats have been mostly somber and boring and he's just Bone Thugz' rapping over them a good chunk of the time.

At least not over the course of a whole album. Some songs demand a little patience lyrically, a little flow. I don't love the theme of the song, but "Darkness" is a great, rare example of him flowing with the beat and spirit of the song.

That when Dre and the Bass Bros were fully engaged they wouldn't really allow him to devolve into this type of sound and highlighted his playfulness.

Hate to say it but I also think drugs had a lot to do with his more upbeat and playful attitude in that early part of his career.

with no producers to reel him in it has just been one long unlistenable ride.
Not that his first albums are classic in my book, but at least that's somewhat debatable.

Yeah I sometimes think Wu should start smokin on dustblunts again too.
It's a selfish thought and obviously i prefer them and Em to stay healthy in mind body and spirit but it does take away from the art unfortunately.

Likely won't get much replay, but ya gots to appreciate his skill and it's always fun to listen to it on display...

so much hate on here... at this point, we all know better... so just enjoy his wordplay and on to the next one....

That said, his first album Infinite is still by far my favorite, so shows were I am at as far as his jarring content is concerned.

63. "Just discovered the original demo version of "Lose Yourself""
In response to Reply # 0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpnmusENHRI

It's a completely different song, lyrically. Refreshing to hear new Eminem from a time period where he was at his best, in my opinion.

Per his annotation Genius:

When we were making 8 Mile, I was revisiting this old CD from two years before, going through old loops. I found the “Lose Yourself” demo on this session where me and Jeff Bass were just making beats. Jeff was just sitting on those guitar chords, and then it went into something different. I was just like “Yo, that section, right there, I gotta make a beat out of that.” I recorded the demo version of it the same day I made the beat. I didn’t like the rhyme, and put it off to the side.

But it’s one of those beats I never gave up on. That beat was definitely a highlight of my producing. I ended up doing the new version on the set of the movie, just writing between takes.

8 Mile wasn’t coming out for another year and a half, and Curtis really wanted music for the movie. He wanted it to be created from the environment, so he was pushing me to make stuff. I think “Lose Yourself” was the only thing I worked on specifically for the movie.

We filmed half of it in the dead of winter. We had a music trailer on set, designed like a studio. One trailer was music, and we had another with gym equipment in it.

We were on lunch break, and I needed to finish the track. I don’t think it was one take all the way down, but it was one take each verse. “Got the first verse, okay, punch me in at the second. OK, the whole third verse.” For some reason, I just captured something there that I didn’t want to change. I remember trying to change it and go back and re-do the vocals, and I was like “Yo, let me listen to the old ones? Just keep the old ones, fuck it.”
