it legit sounds like 6 tracks. for some reason theres 2 or 3 tracks that seem to have 3/4 remixes. i read that it was more of a compilation than an album. not saying dont listen but just temper your expectations.

I'm one of those people that think he still hasn't lived up to the promise he exhibited on The Waters, but I was digging a good amount of this ep.

Seems a little bit darker than the last two, but not beyond what seemed likely or possible for them. Just that if you take the usual adjectives thrown at their records - gospel, gothic, punk, etc. - then this one leans harder on the gothic angle.

In any case, I like it very much. And it takes awhile for Fisher's (I assume he writes the words, please correct if I'm wrong) lyrics to sink in for me since he is very smart and I am rather thick, so I expect to enjoy it even more once it's had a few more runs for me.

All told, I haven't enjoyed very many records as much as "The Underside of Power" so the fact that I'm already sure that "There is no Year" counts as a perfectly good Algiers record is a good sign, considering how high those standards are.

Haven't listened yet but plan to shortly. Definitely some of the best ears for music so I have kinda high expectations.

Saw Mumu Fresh do a couple songs at Roots Picnic last year and her voice is something special

Mostly stuff from people I've never heard of but maybe I'll do some discovery work...

A few singles that popped up in my Release Radar that I enjoyed:

Gary Clark Jr. feat. The Roots - This Land (Remix)
TOKiMONSTA feat. EARTHGANG - Fried for the Night
The Leonard Simpson Duo (Guilty Simpson, Leonard Charles) - GUILTY

UK hiphop..apparently "afroswing"?

i have a hard time listening to rap with a uk accent but this is pretty good. some variety in the production. some good features. id say its 3.5-4 out of 5. worth a listen.

6/8 tracks sound good off the rip, I feel like one of the last 2 is some detroit techno that'll grow on me

songs don't seem unnecessarily long with a lotta out of place features. Will check it out this weekend and report back.

overall it's a dope project.

Back and Nue U are the stand outs for me. Dream and Relax were pretty cool too.

In response to Reply # 0

This dude is the grandpa to all of today’s publicly deemed hottest rappers. Too bad, his off-spring’s offspring don’t have the same skill and ability this dude has.

I used to shun anything from the South, when I first left there back in the 90s, because it wasn’t hot on the MTV Raps or Rap City. The. These dudes came through in ‘97/‘98, and I started to slowly shift. This cat done grown and turned into one of the illest to ever do it.

I wonder what he would have turned into with Jay’s (and his team’s) influence instead of dealing with the shiggidy he’s dealt with as the star in Baby’s camp.

It would be bananas if he worked with many of the other elder statesmen in the game. I wonder what he and Black Thought would sound like on a track or three together. Him and Styles and Jada. Him and the Griselda cats would be sick. What would him and 50 or Nas or Pusha or Roc M or Mos or Rozay or Lupe or J. Cole or Kendrick. There are a few others I’m sure he’d go dumb with. Him and Jay Rock went crazy together on “Bing James” (track 8).

Anyway, I’m on track 19 (Piano Trap) and have only heard one or two songs with subpar beats but the lyricism was still ridiculous. Enjoy this because we may not get another one.

In response to Reply # 34

It was a chore getting through all 24 tracks and by the second half of it I was skipping to the next song after hearing a verse/hook. The only song that stuck out to me as enjoyable was Mahogany, and who knows if that only generated a positive response from me because my ears weren't already feeling defeated after 1+ hour of this album. Wayne just doesn't seem like he's saying anything anymore, and even back in his mid-2000s prime he had plenty of verses with absolutely no substance but at least he seemed like he was having fun and his charisma overshadowed his weaknesses.

In response to Reply # 35

The second half wasn’t bad. I think the shortness of the songs helped to keep me from just turning it off because I hate albums stuffed with too many songs. The features were spaced out enough to help as well.

I did think he was having fun. It seems like rapping is easy to the guy in spite of the fact that substance has never, per se, been his strong suit. He’s never really stuck to a theme other than just rhyming for the sake of rhyming or maybe his metaphors/similes just went way over my head.

In response to Reply # 35

has at least partially prevented me from getting into him.

I was probably to closed minded during his prime to check honestly.

And now that I want to check, I have no fucking idea where to start and I can't take a vacation or some shit to get it done.

All I know is that verse he had on that Solange album was fucking fire...not sure if that type of track/verse is rare as far as subject matter or what.

So...if anyone wants to point to the essential release or the essential tracks, I'd be very grateful.

In response to Reply # 47

Carter III prob has the most tracks you've already heard.

Then there are just a shit ton of mixtapes from that time period (Dedication 1, 2 and 3, Da Drought 3 and one of my favorites, No Ceilings).

The mixtapes might be a way to get into Wayne the rapper over instrumentals you're already familiar (these are mixtapes in the classical sense, rappers rapping over other rapper's beats, not the "mixtapes" of today which are more like actual albums).

Thank you

Yeah, I know he has a ton mixtapes too which adds to the "where do I start?" feeling I've had.

I think I've seen a couple of his on "greatest mixtapes of tall time" lists.

Thanks again

Also, there's a song called "La La" on Tha Carter III that is pretty bad, but that's not to be confused with "La La La" that was leaked before that is a great track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YXXAuBy2UQ

i really liked the first half. the second half kind of started reminding me of spearhead and not in a good way lol. still worth checking out. theres a variety of styles and overall has a pretty good vibe.
