"Talk me into or out of joining the military"

I found out today the cut off is 42. I thought it was 38. I’m 39. So now I’m thinking bout all the benefits of military. I’m a military brat. So once I turned 23 shit got real. The benefits alone would be worth it. So the hard part would be basic training of course. But I’m sure I could find something chill to do that wouldn’t require me being in combat. Maybe it would be good for me. Money and benefits wouldn’t be such an issue and I can travel. What day you?

I'm serious - you have to be able to have your brain malleable and be willing to let them take control.

They tell you what to do every fucking second of every day in the beginning - I could go along with that when I was young, but now - I get mad when anyone tells me anything.

This would be like having 18-25 year old roommates NOW - I'd kill them. When I was 22 I could do it - but now it's unthinkable.

And then you're in the FUCKING ARMY - the worst branch - at least with the Navy you get near the coast most times.

Have you considering becoming an Instagram hoe??

Maybe she's thinking Air Force?

I admit the whole idea sounds weird but I have heard of people doing it as far as joining the military at a late age.

Looks like the Air Force does too?

But if y'all have this level of push back to an internet posting how ya gonna react when some 28 year tells you to do 100000 push ups and to clean your toilet with a toothbrush for 6 hours?

AF punishment is more paperwork, taking away privileges, or giving extra duty

that corporal punishment drop down and give me 100 will get you in trouble QUICK in the AF.

There was one story about a contractor who was supposed to handle the plumbing who let untreated sewage recirculate back into the same water troops used to take showers. No thanks, bro.

Not to mention you never know when the President will decide to send you to the next impossible to win quagmire.

-Is there a particular branch or function that you're interested in?

-Do you have any skills you've accrued/nurtured up to this point that might be relevant?? Like from a line of work you've been doing or a nerdy hobby/interest you have?

-I vaguely remember you posting about being a (single?) mother. Do you have a good support system to help with your child(ren)? I'm thinking about if you had to go away for training, deployment, etc. And also, to the extent that you know your child(ren), do you think he/she/they would adapt alright to having a parent in the military? (Note: I'm not well-versed on anything military-related at all... so if this is a dumb question I do apologize but also feel free to educate me on whether the military provides adequate supports for parents, single or not)

-This question might be tough, and please feel free to not answer: I also vaguely remember you posting about your struggles towards sobriety. I've heard/read how difficult being in the military can be mentally, emotionally, etc... do you think enlistment/ training/ deployment/ post-deployment could trigger substance use and/or pose a risk to your ongoing recovery?? I ask this with complete respect and sensitivity for what you've overcome and, again, feel free to not answer.

Tbh I don't think I know enough about you or the military to advise. But these are honest questions/concerns that came to mind after reading what you shared.

If this link is correct: https://www.thebalancecareers.com/us-military-enlistment-standards-3354001

… the max age is 39 if you wanna go active duty. Either way, handle has valid points and I couldn't personally do it myself. BUT if you can get in, keep that tunnel vision (even for just one term), you'll have a lot more resources on the other side than you do now. Maybe Air Nat'l Guard is an option?

that has benefits.

Do you have to go through basic training and all that physical shit at 39?

Can you run a few miles and do push ups?

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

healthcare for life
free career training
plus you dont have to worry about down payments when you buy a house

Air Force puts the most money into quality of life over other branches by far

pick you a chill job in healthcare or IT, and be set for life

OKP dont know shit about the military but will quickly tell you some falsehood so and so cousin nem years ago told somebody else

imagine The Jacksons teasing other kids in school because their parents DONT make them stack bricks at home like Joe Jackson.....yeah.

its the Army and Marines that join for every reason EXCEPT to benefit them personally.

they join, then let their respective branches finesse them into believing no other branch is better than them and everything is a competition.

meanwhile, you’re going to and from work, minding your business. they looking at you jealous that all you have to do is work and go home while they still get treated like basic training.

time to get out of the military and they discover that all that rah rah tuff guy military bullshit they fed into equals zero dollars on the outside.

I have a close acquaintance who endured multiple deaths early in life, a painful struggle and he really was not cut out for a regular 9-5 or college life. The military gave him brotherhood, global experiences, security and structure. He was prepared for anything and served in Afghanistan, Eastern Africa and traveled throughout Europe.

Today, he is an amazing man and financially secure. I notice most black men who serve are ver healthy, stable, structure, honorable and overall very financially comfortable men.

I have yet to see one downside to joining the military if the person is not cut out for college at 18. Not many other options except for FedEx, Amazon, some tech fields or certifications in healthcare.

"We got paid the same amount of money to sit inside."

I know this because I was my AFSC was 67052 - Financial Services Specialist. Essentially, I was the dude who handled all of the money. I've briefed generals (in the Pentagon) and lower ranked airmen about the financial entitlements - military pay and travel pay.

Why would I go to any other branch if all I'm motivated by is seeing the world, getting paid, and taking advantage of the benefits?

I've also reminded him to not be mad at me because he couldn't get his ASVAB scores up.

to make your bed only to tear it up and tell you to do it again, polish your boots for them to see they teeth or phuck with you by stating they your "family" only to psychologically throw your problems in your face during bootcamp?

gurl, if you say yes, go for it. just dont get ASMODE.

I've dated military and work within the military-DRAMA!!! from marines ready to beat the blue out of navy personnel to attending a recent Navy Christmas Ball when all hell broke loose, the wife and the boat boo got into a fight, its posted online somewhere. If you can stomach that, go for it.

And since you have a child and single, oh man. Cant find daycare or anyone to babysit your kid when you got on duty watch. you better not go AWOL.

And, you drink too. CSADD if you go NAVY.

Why'd you wait so late to do this?
Dont let them know how old you are 'cuz if they smell blood they going in for the kill especially the females.

Just be a contractor with your specialized skill.

There are other options such as Diplomatic Security or Foreign Service that have the same benefits as the military. Positions at all levels.

I think by the age 40, she would have developed some transferable skills. Start looking into contracting options, get a security clearance and go work for the U.S. government.

Can't be that hard. Unless she has a spotty background, no degree and no skills. But most people by 40 have something to offer.

Do you really want to put your life in the hands of Orange Crush and a group of Congressional leaders that do not care about your well-being while enlisted (people getting electrocuted in showers, etc.), will allow for contractors to provide you with crap equipment to save a buck (faulty body armor, etc.) and then will play games with your benefits (VA benefits, housing, medical, etc.) when you leave?

BTW, I am not anti-military. I have family that are currently serving and deployed and my family has served in every major conflict since WWII (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines).

From viewing their experiences, talking with them and providing them with resources over the years (buying body armor, etc.), it just doesn't seem like a good time to enlist.

it might've been better in your youth. basic training isn't the worst thing in the world...if you join the AF. the others will be way more rugged and longer.

you might actually go to war. you don't know where you'd ultimately end up living once basic and tech school are over. your children will be away from you while you get trained up. eventually you might have to uproot everything to join.

AF is prolly best if you do go. way easier physically during basic and afterwards you typically have a non-combat job.

Major trigger warning if you watch the article's video. You may not want to watch if you are sensitive, a victim of sexual assault, etc. It haunts me to this day and I never would have watched it if there was a trigger warning.

Veteran or not, no one deserves to be treated this way.

But yeah, the country is mad disrespectful to veterans.

My friend passed away and his wife is trying to get into IT and I pray she sticks it out because there is money out here. I ain’t even on the tech side but I’m making money at a faster rate than any other field I’ve worked in.

I have a buddy who's in the Guard doing cyber (he has his TS/SCI...don't think he has Poly). I had to endorse one of his certs that he got and he was like, could he come work for me...I laughed and said (and he was being deployed to do some cyber stuff), he'd make more money elsewhere.
