And it always made sense to me, even if I can't *personally* understand it. But I think the portions that most resonated with me were when he was saying that the fact that he has such a history with his art, and therefore high expectations (both from himself and from the fans/critics) makes it hard to figure out how to move forward making *new* art because of the pressure.

I can sorta grasp that and understand it. Even if, as a fan, it's still frustrating not to have new music from such a transcendent and important talent.

he's definitely mentioned things about the pressure before. that bar is high. it would be really hard to have 'success' relative to what he's done before.

sux for us, but sux even more for him to battle the mental aspects and not feel like he can do much. I hope this convo helps him see that is ok for him to at least make the music rather than thinking about it so much.

..I expect nothing less from Rubin & 3000.

Hopefully, this helps fans/critics recognize that being a professional creative is much larger than desire (you, me, & everybody). That even when you want to continue, there are things (personal standards, integrity, LIFE, etc.) that effect your creative process that simply can't be ignored.

*That said, if you haven't checked out Shangri la (https://www.sho.com/shangri-la), you should.

>some things were a bit weird but it was some cool insight.

That's just it: life is weird.

But life for a working professional creative is extreme in ways that most people never acknowledge. The simplest task can often become the most challenging aspect of your day, for reasons completely outside of your control.

The impact of that can be astounding.

Which is why as much as we might crave something new from our tried & true favs, we might be better served by returning to their previous efforts. Learn to listen for things we've never known or somehow long forgotten. Everything we need to know is right there. Life is in the music.

yeah but with The Love Below.. he had already primed us for it.

It wasn't a complete left turn (for me).

He had slowly built up to it from ATLiens through Stankonia with the increasing amount of Dre-sing sung choruses, the cross-genre instrumental experimentation.. even Southernplayalistic incorporated a lot of soul/funk/rock elements.

Essentially, The Love Below was the next logical progression. It was new, but it wasn't totally unexpected.

>It was new, but it wasn't totally unexpected.

But there's a difference between slight experimentation on otherwise very hip-hop sounding albums full of rap verses, like he did from Southern through Stankonia; and almost *completely* abandoning hip-hop all together, and singing about love for 20 tracks.

The leaps from Southern to ATL to Aquemini to Stank were incremental. The leap from Stank to TLB was MASSIVE. Know what I'm saying ?

So even if in hindsight it was *A* logical progression for his career, I'm not sure anyone (besides you, apparently, lol) heard TLB and immediately thought "yea, that makes sense." In hindsight, maybe. But right away I have a hard time believing that there were a lot of people nodding their heads like "yep this is exactly where I saw him taking his sound."

Pretty sure it was jarring for 99.999999% of OutKast fans to hear not a single rap verse until the very last of 20 songs.

There were rap verses on a few earlier tracks. But point taken.
