"That Peloton ad..."

I am so glad that I'm not the other person that is alternately perplexed and furious when this ad comes on.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pShKu2icEYw

Apparently there are tons of articles about it and this twitter thread about Peloton ads in general that I though was great.

Real talk, ain’t nothing wrong if your wife asked for one...

but the commercials hilarious because it’s always on some “surprise!!!”

Plus she is all “it’s my first day, I’m scared”

Just another ridiculous commercial.

Hey Boo I know you like to ride a bike at the gym so I got you one...done.

But all of the stupid cellphone vids of her say "uh can I do this?" Im so insecure about myself...

Then a year later going "this has changed my life!!!" I think people are a lot more aware of what these messages mean now.

You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Maybe I'm the target?

Edit: Yeah...everyone else is crazy lol (i.e. Twitter doesn't represent normal people)

https://www.cnn.com/2019/12/03/us/peloton-ad-controversy-trnd/index.html

Social media is awash in critics who have seen the ad and are confounded by its aims, accusing Peloton of peddling negative body image, unchecked privilege, and gross marital dynamics.

I straight up sold bikes for several years. I sold everything from the $300 townie bike to the $13,000 racer.

While it might be somewhat inspirational to view a weight loss journey through riding, not all folks have a magical transformation through riding. You just become a more refined version of yourself and it makes your booty and thighs grow so....thats a thing.

I guess I'm trying to say, in my years of being on the floor, most of my interactions were with people who were not overweight but were definitely out of shape. You can be a piece of shit out of shape person and still be slim as fuck (speaking from direct and personal experience here).

in another response here I was saying that I sold bikes for a long time

i just see peloton as a rich persons thing / cycling geek play thing / toy for people who spin but HATE the idea of actually cycling outdoors.

I saw that shit years and years ago and just thought "aint for me, cool idea...." and kept it moving.

I guess part of me is seeing this as someone coming into a bike shop and getting mad that a thing as a 10, 15 or 20 thousand dollar bike exists and being mad that there are lots of people who buy them

the big difference is that peloton is selling this is in the public space and its being taken as / they are positioning it as something everyone can have when its really like a porsche advertisement on primetime.

heard from someone else, but those 'live instructor' shows they're selling in those screens telling you you're being virtually motivated by riding with all these people all over the world, are a separate subscription/membership type thing you would apparently have to keep paying for to get. I'm not sure if it stops you from being able to use the bike otherwise lol! jk

That's still a lot for an exercise bike but I think that's in the general ballpark of home gym equipment like Soloflex.

Than biking...
So that’s my gauge.

I feel like you’d have to bike at least 3 times what you’d run to see the calorie burn benefits. So what I can burn in say 23min... I’d have to bike for over an hour or more on a stationary bike.

riding makes you enter a (pardon the pun) cycle where you tap into that part of your kid brain thats going "wheeeeee! wheeeeeeee! fun! this is fun!" which after sometime changes to "wheeeee...wait a second, if it's fun riding, wouldn't it be more fun to go faster?"

so you start adjusting small things to go faster like eating better or having those days where you feel sluggish as shit because you're hungover and so you start cutting it back a bit. and then that kid part of your brain keeps saying "faster! faster!"

before you know it, you're wearing fucking spandex on the weekends, shaving your legs, judging people for not wearing rapha, and start pretentiously dropping Italian in casual conversation "I'm really more of a Campa-N-YELLOW person really when it comes to grrrr-OOO-pos"

Then you grow a beard and start acting like a jock.

I'VE SEEN THIS SHIT HAPPEN.

heh. kidding about the last part about becoming a cycling jock, but, riding will make you think differently which is a major part of losing a beer gut.

Bought a Specialized Sirrus Elite Carbon two months ago and I recognize this transition. It's like I want to increase my mileage in a way that I used to remember when I was in shape and the feeling is getting stronger every time I ride.

They had the one were the couple laid down in the bed to watch tv and it was mounted on the ceiling?

I went to Audio/Video to get a Phillips cd burner and walked into the video room and they had one of those TVs in there, and it was 10 grand. I chuckled about it and walked out. Told a co-worker about it and she was all like "why would they advertise that on TV if it costs so much?" I said "Because Michael Jordan watches TV too"

Yeah...shit is targeted like a mofo..but so are car commercials...appliance commercials...everything

This Peloton ad is a dystopian fitness inspo hellscape

By
Brittany Shammas
Dec. 4, 2019 at 7:49 a.m. EST

The woman wears an eerie expression as she climbs onto her new Peloton for the first time. She’s sort of smiling, sort of grimacing. She looks like she might burst into tears.

“I’m a little bit nervous. But excited,” she says, not at all convincingly, at the start of the pricey stationary bicycle company’s new commercial.

It was a look that spawned a thousand Twitter jokes. To some, the young mother — who spends the majority of the 30-second ad toiling away on the bike after her husband gives it to her for Christmas — looked like a hostage.

To others, she bore a striking resemblance to the possessed character who delivers the titular line in the horror movie “Get Out.”

I *knew* I'd seen that #peloton face before! pic.twitter.com/LCtn81FyOR
— Honorable Rod Shaw (@aswadrodz) December 3, 2019

An Internet that rarely agrees on anything was seemingly united on this one thing: The Peloton ad was downright dystopian.

And accidentally hilarious.

“The Peloton Ad Woman Is Absolutely Not OK,” said a Vice headline, accompanied by a Photoshopped image showing cartoon tears flowing from the woman’s eyes.

“Someone please help the woman from Peloton’s awful new ad,” USA Today implored.

“My husband got me a Peloton for Christmas, nothing weird about that!” comedian Eva Victor exclaimed in a widely shared parody video. “Thank you, you get me!”

Peloton, a New York-based start-up now worth billions, makes luxury indoor bicycles that start at $2,245 (a price point CEO John Foley called “crazy affordable”) and streams subscription-based workout classes.

The company has a cultlike following to rival SoulCycle’s. But it’s been panned in the past for its ads — most notably due to a penchant for showing its bikes in opulent settings, as highlighted last year in a lengthy Twitter thread.

I put my Peloton bike in the center of the panoramic living room window in my New York penthouse pic.twitter.com/ol0B3Kavif
— Clue Heywood (@ClueHeywood) January 28, 2019

The Christmas commercial, however, reached a new level of Internet infamy, and investors reacted negatively: The company’s stock tumbled Tuesday by 9 percent. (“Peloton Stock Is Pummeled on Backlash From ‘Gift That Gives’ Ad,” Bloomberg blared.)

The ad made its debut last month, just in time for the holiday season. On YouTube, where the comments are turned off, the ad carried an innocuous title: “The Gift That Gives Back.” The caption urged viewers to “give your loved ones the opportunity to discover their strength, whenever they want it, all year long.”

But to many watching, the star of the commercial didn’t seem to want it at all. After the Peloton is foisted upon her, the woman, identified only as “Grace from Boston,” films herself reporting to it day after day. “Five days in a row,” the already thin woman tells the camera. “You surprised? I am.” She pries her eyes open in bed, groaning, “Six a.m. Yay.”

At the end, in a twist some found to be a little too “Black Mirror,” she plays the montage of grueling workouts for her husband the next Christmas, turning to him to watch his reaction. The Peloton looms in the background.

It was spousal abuse, viewers cried. It was sexism, a descent into wellness hell, society’s “nightmare before Christmas.” Many ascribed misery to “Grace,” imagining she had been forced into spinning her days away on her husband’s behalf like some kind of millennial Rumpelstiltskin story.

“She would rather be anywhere else in the world than here,” mused Vice, “in her glacial home with the husband she loathes, putting on this sick pantomime of wellness and marital bliss; she’d even rather be back on the dreaded Peloton.”

I’m gonna marry the peloton wife and let her do whatever she wants and bake her garlic bread every night and give her scarves for Christmas
— Sophia Benoit Blanc (@1followernodad) December 2, 2019

Despite all the ridicule, Peloton just might have the last laugh. The commercial has brought plenty of attention. And then there’s the company’s reaction to its previous brush with online mockery, the Twitter thread of bikes in fancy locations.

“That thread demonstrated that Peloton has officially become part of the cultural conversation,” a company spokesperson told CNBC earlier this year.

right during the holiday season.

its moments like this that i feel mad detached from society cuz i honestly have no idea why this commercial caused such a (likely profitable) shitstorm.

i swear shit like this has to be intentionally a/b split tested in some marketing dept somewhere.

based on strong holiday sales forecasts.

that stock price will rise again once those strong holiday sales roll in.

dicks stock price plummeted when they stopped selling guns. then they started posting 6yr record sales quarters in the aftermath.

the widespread coverage of this commercial didnt do anything but increase brand awareness and put eyes on their product. earned media 10x more valuable than their official promo campaign.

their target demo didnt do anything but relate to the people in the commercial more and see a new toy for christmas lol.

Yeah, she could have invisible health challenges or whatever, but that’s not expressed in the commercial.

So, instead, what you have is a privileged person talking about their struggle in the faces of people who actually struggle.

Leave out the ‘changed my life’ shit, make it about a rich woman who loves her bike, and it’s fine.

I bet that they were even more miserable last night. I’m watching a little bit of the ‘Hawks/Rams last night and they were one of the ad sponsors for last night’s game. I’m like I know that they lost about 20 viewers due to that Peloton ad.

Like she came home to a big-ass box of Popeyes chicken sandwiches. These same online folks would be like "that's REAL love!"

Don't see an issue with this commercial. She gets on the bike, works hard, becomes a top-level MILF in her social circles. Stunting on chicks half her age. She's happy. Hubby's happy. Kid's happy because mom & dad are happy.

Only thing wrong with this commercial is the husband should've bought two bikes or a set of weights for himself. She's gonna leave him when that dad bod grows and she realizes he isn't on her level.

i know when i saw the ad i thought to myself "uh what?" but its definitely not an ad that i kept thinking of lol

it came on while i was getting my hair cut and the hairdresser said thats a stupid commercial and i chuckled.

ive ignored this post and didnt connect it because i thought it was about an ad on this site that i totally am not blocking.

ive seen more media coverage for it than people complaining about it.

in general what ive seen is "this is another example of people being too sensitive now"

a thing happens. a percentage of people in comment sections or twitter are offended/oversensitive/whiny over it.

even though a larger percentage of this are just people who find it kinda lame or make jokes about it, but it gets reported in the media as "people are outraged"

which sparks a counter of people who are SO TIRED of everyone being so oversensitive which seems to contain a much higher percentage of people who are actually mad than the original group they're bitching about.

is because it's easy.

certain groups see it as beneficial. so they help package it for an easy media hit. it eats up minutes, and it ticks the emotional reaction boxes.

good, bad, whatever. media is tuned to show things that people react to and discuss. claiming there's a controversy does it every time.

my loose interpretation was

- he knows she's into fitness, maybe she isn't motivated to leave the house and work out

only weirdos (no offense if it applies) loosely interpret it as

- he feels like she needs to lose weight

if there's some other reason it would be offensive to surprise someone with a bike, please explain

to be fair, its a rock and a hard place if you're not trying to make a typical weight loss ad (with the cheap looking before/after tesimonials)

Most equipment gets away with showing it building muscle, so they can start with an already fit person

i mean, whether or not its sexist aside, she really didn't seem 'improve' at all. They could have had her go from regular clothes to wearing fitness stuff at the end eating fruit or something to at least symbolize a lifestyle change.

>- he feels like she needs to lose weight
>
>if there's some other reason it would be offensive to surprise
>someone with a bike, please explain

aint nothing to explain if you can't figure out why somebody might construe that as you telling them their fat and why that might not go well

those headlines misrepresent tweets tweeted by people who you can't even confirm exist.

no one has broken a peloton, or stormed their office, or even boycotted their $2,000 exercise bikes.

there can be a gap between people saying "I don't like that" and outrage.

This was CLEARLY a very well executed ad campaign as previously mentioned in this thread.
Step 1:
Release goofy commercial that no one would likely ever bat an eye at.
Step 2:
Reach out to the typical media outlets and start some buzz about people being "upset" or having "issues" with this new "controversial" ad.
Step 3:
Give it a few days to REALLY peculate.
Step 4:
Have partner company (Aviation) release part 2 of the ad creating MORE buzz and attention for both brands...

C'mon people...wake up. smh.
I'm outraged at how gullible everyone is....
Ryan Fckin Reynolds is not some sort of marketing genius for putting out that Aviation ad as some sort of "response" to the Peloton ad.
