"40 and up Folks, What's changed (diet, sleep, health, etc,) in ya life?"

I can't eat the same as I use too, even from my 30's. This new gut seem to want to pat rent. I don't have patience for tomfoolery. waking up with something not hurting is unexpected. Oh and my eyes have turned in their 2-week notice - every two weeks I seem to have worst vision... LOL

my gut is trash, even when I try to eat right. And vision? in restaurants I usually have to use my cell phone light to see the menu and the bill lol.

Oh and my patience is trash too, I've literally become a grumpy old man lol.

These young kids make it hard.

After work and picking up the kids from daycare and fixing dinner it’s tome for them to go to bed.

But I have to find the time to get more exercise in. I’ve started walking at work when I get tired of sitting.

In response to Reply # 2

For me it’s beer. I love IPA’s.

It’s also my new job. Less movement, more free food and drinks. Happy hours and lunch meetings. Also have an endless supply of sodas at work. I don’t drink soda at home but since it’s in the fridge at work I was getting it in. So now I drink a diet soda every now and then but now it’s mostly water.

Also cut out the sugar in coffee and cut back on my intake.

Have to cut back on those and cut out the carbs

Already dropped 10 pounds

Shit happened so fast tho. I didn’t like my term life quote so I got another physical 6 months later and my blood work and that’s when my bloodwork came back ugly.

I was always a skinny shit who could eat whatever I wanted. Shit, I used to hit KFC after the gym and still maintain a six pack just fine. now I'm looking preggers in the window reflection, and trying to suck it in for photos.

I had 20/20 vision my whole life and waited a good couple years too long before copping glasses but they were life changing.

Ultra spicy foods come with a price

No pain really, but occasionally I'll just wake up with some random injury caused by nothing

I was a skinny cat that worked out all the time. If I sneezed I'd open my eyes to a 6 pack. My Metabolism was crazy. My boys said ai had a tapeworm. When I hit 42, I was still rocking the 6 pack, and my friends use to call me the forever Male Model. Now, m gut is taking selfies...lol

Taking off these glasses just to read is the pits. I'm gonna have to get some $300 + progressives. I ain't ready.. LOL

13. "@ two recent conferences I ran into a couple IFers"
In response to Reply # 4

One conference this summer and another last week, two different older and bigger guys who both dropped a lot of weight.
Not sure if either knows each other, but both had scares that they were being kicked off of their life insurance policies. So they decided to get it together.

Summer conference guy is typically an asshole, but he talked my ear off about how he lost over 120 lbs in about 10 months (I hadn't seen him in a year). Explained that he read The Plant Paradox, and sticks to those suggested foods--in addition to only eating Kosher animal products. But he also swears by an intermittent fasting lifestyle too. Not only did he look good, he was a happy cheerful person. I was amazed.

The conference that just passed, a different guy who was noticeably slimmer, told our group that all he did was stop drinking beer, when someone asked/complimented him. After he walked away his colleague told us he was just trying to be cool, but that he definitely lost the weight by intermittent fasting.

My gut has flourished to it's maximum size, since 40 this year. I now realize that I need to hop aboard the IF train.

i just started going to bed earlier, another thing we’re supposed to do

plus eating right before bed was already bad anyway

pretty much, an eating window of 12-8 and going to bed around 10 is really what we should be doing sans the late breakfast

once i came to that conclusion it all just became easy

i lost 10lbs in 2 months and havent even started exercising or calorie counting yet

Like seasoned vet above. But I often move that noon starting time back, if I'm not hungry, I don't eat.

I work out while fasted - barbell focused weight lifting and high intensity interval training cardio.

Don’t really see results like some other people

Lately I’ve cut down on the carbs and that’s been more impactful as far as weight loss.

16. "SUGAR!"
In response to Reply # 0

Never had much of a sweet tooth, and I actually still don't. Not like I dislike sweet stuff, it's just not a go-to snack for me. But since I turned 40, with an odd specificity that was almost to the day, eating anything sugary has a profound and immediate impact on me. Like, if I have a single, small sip of a regular non-diet soda I can *feel* my pupils dilating like a horny cartoon. It hits like a powerful, but very brief-acting drug.

I don't really know what to make of this, and since it was always a minimal part of my diet it doesn't really have much effect. But it was noticeable, very weird, and like I said, started occurring almost at 40 years to the day. Like my warranty just lapsed or something.

Sugar is worse than meat and I will run on this platform forever. Small doses or sprinkles is all we need.

I notice my hands swell, feet itch and my lips get crusty if I eat too much sugar. I don't want anything to taste sweet. Just give me flavor over sweetness any day!

I use to try rescuing too many of them while trying to keep my house intact. my house never really suffered, but it was draining for me trying to spend time/effort with folks outside my house. I backed way up and only talk with few of them occasionally.

health wise, I hate wearing glasses. mainly for driving. my cardio needs some work and so does this gut. I feel like I look fluffy. not like fat, but not real solid.

I had to quit the work gym because work got in the way lol. so I'm not lifting nearly as much as I was before. gotta make use of the equipment at home.

was out of work in Jan 2019 and figured "if i'm not working i at least have a bunch of time to work out" so i started working out 4 or 5 times a week until i started working again in March.

but...i tried keeping my good habits that formed back then (drinking more water and less soda, portion control, etc.) and doing intermittent fasting and most of those habits have stuck.

since i've been working i've not gone back to the gym which isn't ideal but since i'm a big dude my body is naturally shedding lbs. still as long as i'm keeping my calories under my BMR.

the reason i JUST realized it was 45lbs is I bought a scale back in August and weighed myself. then i was telling my wife stuff to get me for christmas and told her the size i thought i needed but we were out shopping and i was like "lemme throw this smaller size hoodie on and see what's up" and the smaller size fit so i weighed myself and had lost 13 lbs since i got the scale so i had to do an accounting of all that i lost since Jan.

fuck, i gotta get back in the gym though. i miss being strong.

5'11", 157 lbs. stationary biking about 70 miles/week, averaging 16 miles/hour. lifting every other day. yoga a few times/week. cooking a lot. rarely eating out or getting fast food. eating beef only a few times a month. working towards a 50% vegetarian diet. trying cut out sugar or at least get under the RDA

i had to make some lifestyle changes in order to raise the floor of my mental health, improve my self-image, and make the transition into middle age easier. i'm in the mid-south aka the stroke belt so i see a lot of very unhealthy people (obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure) and i do NOT want to be like them at all. getting older is hard enough just from a mental standpoint. i don't need additional anxiety about aging from being physically unhealthy

they say when you're young you can play sports to stay in shape.. when you're over 40 you have to stay in shape to play sports ...i hate stretching and cardio, but it has to be done because those injuries will keep you from doing anything.

How many guys in this world really want to stretch? But the older we get, the more disastrous it can be if we don't.

When it first started, I didn’t know what it was and didn’t take care of it. For me, getting a cortisone shot worked best since I was late figuring it out.

Now I have it in my other foot. I can deal with it better now that I recognize it. youtube has a bunch of vids on it. I won’t rule out a shot it the other options aren’t working or are too slow to relieve it.

Someone mentioned fucked up sleeping patterns...bruh that just hit me OUT the blue this year!! I mean I'm waking up at 3-4am every night during the week and then up for kids/work the next day. It's been the worst - although I will say now that it's been 8-9 months, it's amazing what your body can adjust to.

Another thing has been the actual reason for staying in shape. My whole life it's been either due to playing sports or pure vanity. This year was the very first year I've had to do it for "health reasons" - It seems like whatever runs in your family seems to start coming alive. For me, it was blood pressure so I had to change up the eating habits and a ton of water.

in an unrelated matter. Messed up my pinky on my right in a freak accident. As a result, the body at 405 doesn't heal as fast and the fact that I'm right-handed slowed the healing process. I'm finally back to 90%, so I'll take it back up. I need to find a new gym by the hose that offers both or at least the boxing.

61. "Colon health & Bowel Movements Matter! "
In response to Reply # 0

LOL! I refuse to leave the house in the morning without a healthy bowel movement. That might mean tea, aloe vera or a tall glass of water when I first wake up. But that first colon cleanse of the day sets the whole tone for how I eat, how I feel and my energy levels.

I must have a bowel movement every day or I begin to feel bloated, gassy and overall cramped up.

I now incorporate dried prunes into my weekly diet. Sometimes castor oil pills. But I refuse to eat foods that will back me up.

Stomach health, colon health and digestive health are deal breakers when it comes to food. Rather starve than have a messed up stomach!

the other option is to not do anything and hope for the best

at some point in the past few years i decided that spending several hours/week getting healthy by exercising and cooking is a good time investment for the future. there is an argument to be made that if you aren't proactive you're going to spend endless hours in doctor's offices and/or hospitals in your 40s and 50s dealing with stuff that is preventable. i'd rather spend those hours getting healthy now — hopefully being preventive and reducing the need for engaging with medical professionals — because it's easier to develop good habits and discipline while i'm relatively young. trying to turn it around at 50+ seems like a lot of work and i'm a very lazy person so i'm just going to become healthy and maintain it now while it's relatively easy to do

Now I actually have to think about it before I even order food... dang...

IN my 20's I survived on pinto beans, hot dogs and nachos. I remember I used to order 2 medium pizzas and a 2 liter soda and that was dinner.

Now I can even pick up a container of milk without getting bloated.

You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.
