"you ever get denied a raise because of budgeting reasons?"

For the first time in my damn near 40 years of living I finally went to bat for a raise.

I'm not sure what to do. I got a soft "no".

Essentially, I'm doing good and kicking ass but the budget for 2020 has already been set so a raise aint happening.

They write out budgets for the new year in the middle of the current year.

A raise or big bonuses eats into the pool set aside for everyone else.

I was told "you're killing it, buuuuuuuuuut, we aint got the budget for you"

I was also told "keep killing it and lets talk about making a plan for next year so you can get that promotion/raise"

2021 ya'll.

But, I was also told the ask was going to be run up the pole to the next boss and that bosses boss.

So maybe shit could change, or maybe I'm just going to have to keep pushing to find a new gig. Nothing wrong with the place, I've just outgrown it.

You ever experience this sort of thing?

first off, 2021?? man i would definitely not just accept it. hopefully they really are following up on it.

my first "real" job i think i went two years without a raise. it was right in the middle of the recession so they were cutting hours and letting people go. as soon things started getting better i started getting mine. during that period i was also one of the few that didnt get hours cut regularly. i was really going out of my way to show my value.

this year i got a reduced raise because they decided to give bigger raises to production employees so there was less room for middle and up. supposedly. my workload is so relax that i wasnt too bothered. in the end it was still a raise.

bigger picture, 2021 while a long ways off makes sense in a weird way since this is the place where people routinely join the fuck up, sit back and coast for 20, 25, 45, 50 years. No lie. They even have clubs and celebrations for it.

But, yeah, in the current reality I would not want to call this place home for a long time. Its a dead end in a lot of ways but also a life time opportunity in others.

Last year, I was denied my full 3% routine raise because I’m in the 90th percentile of my salary grade and the full amount would have taken me over. I got 2. somethin’, somethin’.

The company is trash. The correct response would have been to move me into a new salary grade.

My manager had been pushing for a salary grade change, especially because I took on more responsibilities, but now everything is in a flux.

I’ve never asked for a real raise largely cause I didn’t think I deserved it or I was more interested in a better position that paid more.

and flaunted how much the company was making and then fronted I’m giving me a raise.

Gave that dude a to day notice when I found a better gig. Woke up and sent him an email. I resign from my position, TODAY!!!

It’s been over a year and he was on my LinkedIn last week. I helped build that company and I know for a fact my renderings helped him sell a ton of large projects.

Most companies also fuck people who are loyal and been with them a long time. The annual merit increases never equal the wages they raise to bring new people in so a new guy often makes more than someone who has been there 10+ years. Its extremely frustrating and suggest people learn what they can and bounce around if want to make proper doe.

that the employee can't really argue. its frustrating because there's no good way around it cuz we simply don't know.

but basically it means you gotta bounce. companies don't pay for loyalty. real raises come from jumping ship.

...of some retaliation b.s. in me calling my former employer out for never hiring or promoting black men into managerial and corporate positions in my region via an email I sent to H.R. back in Jan.

I gave TEN AND A HALF YEARS to this company.

Long story short, probably the best move I made in my professional world and I'm in current litigation with my former employer as the EEOC found that I had grounds for them to be charged with multiple civil rights violations.

in that I've hit the standard 3% increase year over year and I've done ok with bonuses....just ok. I've never hit 100% or anything above - but in doing some covert research I've learned a few team members have reached 110%, 150% and so on.

Back story is that I was having a fucked up time two years ago but I turned everything around.
During that time, I asked "what is going to take to hit next levels and reach a point where we're able to talk about some increases?"

I was told "keep getting better, have a good year"

So I put my head down and got to working.
Now I'm like, shit together, output on smash, team moving as a unit, timelines are down...

ya'll gonna meet me in the middle or....nah?

Sumer of 1999, me and two other friends just graduated high school and while walking around one hot ass day we all applied for the same retail position as a joke.

I got the call back and eventually the job.

one of the guys went into the air force and has been living the moving-my-family-to-a-new-location-around-the-world-every-few-years grind since then.

the other guy is in prison for some sad shit I would rather not mention. total piece of garbage.

I started as a temp after I got laid off from IBM. The staffing service started me at $10, then someone actually read my resume' and was like "Oh, you have technical experience? We'll make you Level 3 support instead of Level 2 like the rest of the seasonal people and bump you to $11."

I got hired on permanently and it went:

$12.60 > $13.60 > $13.70 > $13.70 > $13.70.

It was funny, the times they told me I wasn't getting a raise, they went from "Hope y'all niggas can afford to work these 10-hour shifts and survive from teh vending machine" to going hard on catering multiple meals a day for no real occasion.

A call center job doing customer/tech support for a tax prep software. I was gonna just quit out the blue but I got a call from a recruiter to work at the Chick-fil-A help desk. I worked for CFA for 3 years before more weird advancement issues made me leave last year.

The kicker for the job where I didn’t get a raise was that my supervisor sat me down for review 2 years in a row telling me I outperformed my peers by taking and resolving more than double what the next closest person did. So, I got praised for performing well but told that wasn’t worth a raise.

They changed the rules on what constitutes an performance increase. It used to be that the top two or three tiers of performance got a cash award. They changed it, so that only the very top tier got cash, the next two tiers got time.

I missed top tier by a few percentage points.

Shit, I have more vacation/sick time than I can use already, and I telework two days a week.

I need that $$$$!
