its very unlikely the cop in either situation could tell the race of the person they were shooting through a dark window

I'm saying its unlikely race had anything to do with it in this situation and it is more likely that this idiot cops walk around thinking everyone is out to get them in every situation

but hey sure tell me how i should comment on this post its fine

Because the cops went to the wrong address

Their defense; he's an illegal, so he doesn't have any rights

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.usatoday.com/amp/3822559002

I'm not sure what ignoring similar stories helps

WE know there's a disparity...but that's for every injustice in this country

We need legislation that makes these shootings mandatory sentences

Than trying to win the tragedy Olympics

Remember BLM

Never even got to a real convo about solutions

Because this country is so racist...they wanted to debate and argue...FACTS

FACTS you know, facts I know

You want to keep educating yt folks about their privilege....here's your gold medal

This shooting and killing people in their own homes feels like an escalation

I don't think excluding people is helpful.

You want to keep the focus exclusively on black suffering...these racist MFers will continue to turn a blind eye.

How is being dismissive and defensive helpful ? All lives matter is not a better strategy or solution.

it might not be. for teen to 20s black men, about 1 in 1000 will be killed by law enforcement. that's insane. but for whites it's about 1 in 2500. disproportionate but not negligible. if people knew that and were exposed to the most extreme cases, they might start realizing it could be their kid next and get off their asses.

of families that live in that neighborhood. You a fool if you think cops would be going into fancy white neighborhoods and start shooting into random homes.

This is 100% a race issue. Cops don't value black lives so they shoot first and ask questions later.

i think if the media started framing it as an everyone problem, it would get more traction. but framing it as a race issue is more comfortable for all parties involved. the news media creates more buzz. it becomes a more polar issue. and the cops can keep getting away with it because most of the viewing audience just wants to be "on the right side of history" rather than actually doing anything to ameliorate the problem.

that said, it's hard to talk about this in a serious and accurate manner while ignoring the racial component. cops kill out of fear and out of disregard for human life. they fear black people more and value their lives less. those are just fucking facts and i don't encourage people to ignore them.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

because i could be on either side of this situation

i know my neighbors kinda

immediate neighbors left and right but a few houses down? if i saw their doors open in the middle of the night i might be concerned and could see myself calling the cops in some situations

i live in dallas
own lots of guns, am up late and have done stupid shit like forget to close a door or something random so i could have been on that side too

shits fucked up man

and i know this should be a standing rule but every day makes you reconsider what exactly the cops are good for and only under the most dire circumstances should they be getting involved because when they do show up and fuck up thats your problem to deal with not theirs. to them its just another day

We as citizens, especially black citizens shouldn't sit up here and try to legitimize their go to excuse for constantly murdering unarmed civilians

This isn't a issue of individuals with the same job being too frightened to do that job; it's who and how the job itself is systematically operated by, for and against

Or even excuse it.

They don't value black lives. That's the crime and problem that this cop should go to jail for. Cops should think, If I recklessly take a black life, a may go to jail.

It does sound like an excuse because we all know “I feared for my life” is what they are trained to say to get away with extrajudicial murders.

They are not simply scared, is the point. That’s just their excuse to murder people with impunity; let’s not repeat it for them

We need the name of this cop so we can do a social media check on his background and then this cop must be punished. Fuck a transfer, fuck a leave.....jail is the only justice. Fuck police reform. Real consequences for these cops will reform the police.
A paid family settlement with no jail time for the perpetrator sends a message of no consequence and they will just keep doing this. Shooting someone while doing a wellness check? And who cares if a gun was found in the house. She was not holding it. Also....it's Texas!!!! Every home has a gun....well should according to gun rights advocates.
Ridiculous.

Aaron Dean fired the shot but he was not alone. I trying to figure out what part of a "welfare check" consists of sneaking around to the back yard with guns drawn instead of just knocking on the front door.

The screen doors were closed so it's not like the house was just wide open....

it's crazy how in most criminal cases the conviction rate is probably around 80%. but this shit gets before a grand jury and they almost never convict. the charges are usually just damage control by the city (or state if it's a state trooper), and in the end they don't mean much. his resignation is the only positive sign so far because sometimes these fuckers end up back in law enforcement in some capacity once the dust settles.

Atatiana Jefferson pointed gun at window before Fort Worth officer killed her, nephew told authorities

The police chief says it made sense for the 28-year-old to arm herself if she thought someone was in the backyard of her home.

https://www.dallasnews.com/news/crime/2019/10/15/atatiana-jefferson-pointed-gun-out-window-before-fort-worth-officer-killed-her-nephew-told-authorities/

By Dana Branham

11:07 AM on Oct 15, 2019

A murder warrant for Aaron Dean, the Fort Worth officer who killed Atatiana Jefferson, tells what led up to the shooting from the perspective of her 8-year-old nephew, who was in the room with her when she was shot.

The boy told a forensic interviewer that he and his aunt were playing video games together about 2:30 a.m. Saturday when she heard noises outside. She took her handgun from her purse and pointed it “toward the window” before she was shot, the nephew said, according to the arrest-warrant affidavit.

The 8-year-old saw his aunt fall to the ground. Jefferson, 28, was pronounced dead at 3:05 a.m.

Interim Police Chief Ed Kraus said at a news conference Tuesday that it “makes sense that she would have a gun if she felt that she was being threatened or there was someone in the backyard.”

That sentiment was echoed by an attorney for Jefferson’s family. Lee Merritt said Jefferson had every right to defend herself. The officers did not announce themselves as law enforcement.

“It’s only appropriate that Ms. Jefferson would have a gun,” he said at a news conference Tuesday, noting that the gun was legally owned and she had a license to carry it.

Merritt accused the Fort Worth Police Department of providing a defense for Dean by writing that Jefferson had pointed a gun at the window before Dean fired.

Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price, speaking at a news conference a day earlier, said the gun was irrelevant.

“She was in her own home,” the mayor said of Jefferson. “She was taken from her family in circumstances that are truly unthinkable.”

Kraus said previously that the department’s decision to release a still image of the firearm found in the room where Jefferson was shot — without any further information about the weapon or what it had to do with the case — wasn’t the right call.

Dean, 34, was arrested at his attorney’s office about 6 p.m. Monday on a murder charge. He was freed from the Tarrant County Jail after posting $200,000 bond shortly after 9 p.m., court records show.

Kraus, who spoke before the affidavit was released, said it’s still unclear what Dean was thinking when he shot through a bedroom window, striking Jefferson.

The former officer, who resigned Monday, has not provided a written statement nor answered any questions, the chief said. Kraus had been prepared to fire the officer Monday morning, but Dean quit before he could.

Dean and another officer had been called about 2:30 a.m. Saturday to Jefferson’s mother’s home in the 1200 block of East Allen Avenue. A neighbor had called a non-emergency line to report that the home’s lights were on and its doors open.

An arrest-warrant affidavit for Dean released by police Tuesday said the glass storm doors to the house were closed, but the front and side interior doors were open. Officers peered into the residence through the storm doors but did not see anyone, and they did not announce their presence, according to the affidavit.

In body-camera footage of the shooting, Dean walks around in the backyard of the home. About a minute and a half into the recording released by Fort worth police, Dean swivels toward a window, shouts at Jefferson to put up her hands and shoots her, all in a matter of seconds.

The chief said the shooting has been trying for the department.

Kraus got choked up as he likened the aftermath of the shooting to ants working to build an anthill, when “somebody comes with a hose and washes it away and they just have to start from scratch.”

“We have a great many officers who work extremely hard every day,” Kraus said. “I ask you please do not let the actions of one officer reflect on the other 1,700. There’s absolutely no excuse for this incident.”

Staff writer Jennifer Emily contributed to this report.

But yeah, they're going to use that to say he had legit reasons to shot smh.

And the demographics of Ft. Worth are different than Dallas (the venue for the Guyger case), so a jury may be sympathetic to that argument.

This is precisely the argument the NRA makes for gun ownership.

And why is nobody centering on the fact that this was supposed to be a welfare check. Why didn't the officers trying ringing the fucking doorbell first?

Meanwhile if she had fired first the other cops would’ve unloaded on her.
They thought they were walking up on a burglary and responded as such because they love property protection more than they love black people.

I mean, the cops found the gun anyway, and made SURE to film it sitting on the ground after the shooting was over in order to justify it.

But from what the family's lawyer said, the cop wouldn't have been able to see her holding the gun from the angle of where he was standing. Which I'd hope the prosecution would be able to prove.

even if she did point a gun at him, that should not be a mitigating circumstance and much less to that extent. she is in her own home. they did not identify themselves as law enforcement, park in front of the home or attempt to enter the home in a straightforward manner, such as ringing the doorbell or knocking on the door. for their lack of protocol and proper conduct, she paid the ultimate price, and this guy should pay handsomely for his mistakes, too.
