Here’s an only slightly exaggerated point though. There’s zero upside in debating externally the points made by neo nazis, or a serial killer, or a fanatical Islamist, or a Christian dominionist ... their words aren’t made in good faith, so responding to their words on good faith not only legitimizes a bad faith argument but also gives even slight validity to their ideology. Nothing else is accomplished from engaging with them.

You can’t respond to an ideology via its arguments, because it’s arguments aren’t extensions derived from the ideology, they’re just means to support the end goal. The ideologue will say whatever, do whatever, to meet their end goal.

In this particular case the ideologue will say sports aren’t all about winning and then also raise hell about losing. And so to the original post “bleh”. Nobody is being reactionary. I have legit thoughts about trans women and girls in sports competition but there’s no point in working them out externally in opposition to a pathos that doesn’t have any “thoughts” just a goal and words to get to their goal.

I'm saying half of that is true... and my response to this will show you exactly why I disagree with what you're saying (and how your perspective on this can lead to lazy thinking and/or a passive existence).

It it is true that idealogues use arguments as a means to an end, but it's not true that there's no value in responding, because your response can serve as a means to your own end while delegitimizing theirs, provided you articulate yourself well (my example of how to properly respond to Trump saying black americans are poor is a good example). Even in this conversation, I just agreed with half of what you said, but I don't agree with your overall ideology on how to engage idealogues... but there's value in engaging you. And here's another important point... that value is often the fact that onlookers will either learn from you or simply see that you're consistent and principled. As I said in my initial response, changing your acknowledgement of truth depending on who states it makes you look unstable. I think the better option is to acknowledge with the necessary caveat, if need be.
