Maybe he simply evolved. I think his *response* to this (I haven't looked to see if he's already responded) is what'll tell you a lot about who he really is. If he goes the deny/deflect route, or anything close to it, fuck him forever.

Even if it IS genuine, even if it IS true, it comes off as making an excuse to some folks. And considering the rightful outrage over the fact that he did it in the first place, it's not smart IMO to give additional fodder.

I'm definitely skeptical due to his already having been involved in politics, but otherwise I'm with you - I can speak from experience, both personal and 3rd party.

But yea either way - your point is valid. We're all just speculating, but what you're saying is definitely possible. It'd be pretty stupid for him to do something he *knows* is reprehensible in front of work folks. But then again, if it was an all-white school, maybe he felt comfortable enough with his co-workers and thought he was in "safe" company. Which is obviously UBER fucked up, but not outside the realm of possibility unfortunately.
In other words, knowing white people ... I know several who, like me, would've never done that type of bullshit even in "safe" company. But sadly I also know several white people who would've been happy to do the type of bullshit Mos Def talks about in "Mr. N****", and therefore would've been more than willing to do this type of shit.

In my personal experience it's not that a social group thinks it "OK" it's literally that they do not have the historical knowledge of what blackface actually means. It's deplorable either way but you have to make room for folks who have good intentions but just don't have the historical knowledge base. If no one ever tells you, how would you know it was bad ? You're not born with knowledge. Someone has to tell you things. And so long as they correct the behavior once they're made aware of how bad it is, how can you *totally* fault them ?

If you're superior, you don't feel a need to stack the deck via redlining, Jim Crow, systematic racism, all sorts of discrimination in employment, housing, education, access and opportunity etc. You'd just be flat-out superior. You stack the deck when you're not confident you'll get the outcome you desire if things are equal.
