and Black self-respect through the ability to present a "black normalcy" of sorts and how this is very often at odds with what sells... and why. No disrespect, but what you've contributed here seems to completely miss the point. It's news to anyone here that Lizzo is popular or *why* she's is popular. We also know she's actually talented (at least I do, as I was the one who posted her Tiny Desk concert in praise of said talent). Ask tho, why in 2019 is there no black version of Adele who's loved by all those races as Adele is? Why don't white folks fuck with that? No, we're not begging them to or saying we need/want them to... but we notice that they don't unless there is some kind of (usually niggerish) novelty attached to it. Homely Black woman in a flowing dress, getting all the awards for just being a good singer/songwriter. That ain't what they want from a Black woman. That is the critique for the most part. *I realize I've spoken to you about industry manipulation before, and you always seem to deny it, so if that's the road we're going down, please just say you disagree and we'll save alotta time.*
>is she over the top? Hell yes... she was playing the flute and >twerking years ago... But people see that "I dont give a fuck" >attitude and want to live vicariously through her confidence.
Right, and that'd probably work no matter what race you are... but if you're a heavy-set Black woman, you almost have to do that instead of just being... Adele. No, we're not saying Lizzo shouldn't be herself or whatever wild "but why can't black folks" shit ppl gonna say in response. Just saying we notice the double standard. If you're fine with it, that's on you. If you wanna change it, how you do so is also on you. If you don't notice it, again, let's just agree to disagree.
