First off, he says that you pretty much need to know about the Clan to understand what's going on a lot of the time, and that newbies would be lost. If for no other reason, it helps to know who becomes who.

He said it's at its best when it focuses on the process of them making music, like RZA learning how to use a drum machine without the instruction booklet. But there's also apparently a good deal of material about the crime/drug-dealing they were involved in, which he said is pretty much a lot of other shows that cover the same subject matter. He also said that of the ones he's saw, the eighth is the best.

Personally, I can't see myself not watching it, even if there is a lot of wheel-spinning.

I think if you don’t know the Wu, you could watch this like you watch The Wire, except with drum machines. I’d like to hear from someone who knows little about the Wu who doesn’t enjoy it. I think knowing about the Wu would actually distract you, because they fictionalize certain parts of the history

All members ('cept Dirt, of course) were there together, correcting each other on shit, co-signing on other shit.

Footage of their first ever performances.
Interviews w/ Dirts' momma 'nem.

Footage of their "Summerjam" incident.

Stories from them about how they messed up and caused the group to fall.

Stories from them about the "Once Upon a Time..." fiasco.

The dinner scene with all members was kinda heartbreaking.

Really don't need to see anything else.

Partly fictionalized like the NWA doc.

Pacing is pretty decent. I’m only four episodes in. So far it’s a pretty good street crime series with a couple of shots of Rza making beats LOL

I watched the first episode of the Wu on Hulu and it’s a little slow. They trying to make a Get Down or whatever that Netflix show was called.

really liked this convo with Joey Bada$$ (who plays Deck) and RZA at Angie Martinez' show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgJ7W7Lhu-4

I don't know how true much/most of it is, but the stuff about the process of making music is entertaining. I always find that fascinating.

I don't care as much about the Park Hill vs. Stapleton crime angle. Or the brewing Staten Island vs. the Brooklyn drug dealer, but I realize that it's important to their story, no matter how fictionalized RZA and Alex Tse end up making it.

I like Ashton Sanders as RZA and Moore as Raekwon. The guy who plays ODB is also really good; he has the voice and mannerisms down damn near perfect. Not digging Dave East as Meth.

But yeah, I'll keep watching, if nothing else for the music content.

Feels like this project being released, immediately on the heels of 'mics and men', is unnecessary

Wu-Tang suffers from delusions of grandeur

What impact can they really claim?

Weird gangster mob gambino sounding nicknames?

The 9 member crew, splintering into solo deals, etc...what did that really culminate in?

They didn't change the record game

2 great albums =/= GOAT rap group.

I'm not even a Wu hater

Just confused why they are held in such high esteem decades later

?

Would rather see some of this attention paid to actual seminal rap groups

BUT honestly im down for more and more shows based on hiphop. its definitely been increasing so im for it. i might not watch all of them but im glad theyre being released.

ive never been huge into wutang. definitely love some of their songs and there are some solo projects i love. i would not wear their logo as i would feel as a poser. i know i have not listened to all of their best solo stuff and need to check it out.

i say yes to more wu stuff and yes to more hiphop stuff in general. i would love to see de la soul and native tongues get some shows. im sure theres plenty of people that are all for the wu shows that wouldnt care about a native tongues show.

if this wu show was on a platform that i was already subscribed to i would probably check it out.

this WAS the game changer. nobody had done this before, as I recall. in hindsight, it doesn't seem like a big deal to some because its became the norm. but at the time, it was ground breaking.

and let's be all the way honest

the reason they had to form a 9 member collective, was because they couldn't get record deals on their individual merits

RZA and GZA had contracts prior to Wu...and got dropped.

Decades later, it's not like that is a blueprint for success

IMO, the relationships that members like RZA and Method Man were able to cultivate with hollywood...is helping drive these projects

They figured out a way to form a group that was never going to stay a group, and enabled individual members to eventually get solo deals

...cool...

in the DIY era, is that even relevant...?

"its became the norm"

Hunh?

I must have missed all of these 9 member rap crews that they inspired and the industry moving to that as the norm.

being able to get individual contracts for the members at other labels was the groundbreaking part. of course, it seems trite in this day of internet stardom and diy, but at the time it was new ground.

you don't have to create a new wutang to have influence. it was unique for its time. Master P had huge industry influence too, but nobody really cares about No Limit music like that.

...by a major network, followed by a series on a major streaming platform...

that's the question?

NWA, NAS, BIG and Pac got their hollywood treatments, I'd like to see literally any other pioneering, seminal group, from hip-hop's formative years...get the same treatment

a hollywood level quality project for;
PE
Boogie Down Productions
Grand Master Caz
Cool Herc
RockSteady Crew
Lee Quinones

I just went to a 25th anniversary party for Fat Beats

I'm not dismissing their legacy and impact, I just think it's not equivalent

That logo is an enduring symbol that people are still tattooing onto their bodies to this day. They had their own slang, and an ethos that incorporated martial arts, comic books, crime tales, Five Percent teachings/spirituality, wrestling, etc. that endeared them to many different demographics. Each member was distinct in style and voice, RZA's production was unique and tailored to match, and their initial releases contained incredible music. They presented themselves as larger than life characters unified by brotherhood and purpose, and they were regularly introducing new talented characters to their universe. And honestly, you can still hear (and see) their influence in a lot of the popular indie hip-hop being made today, especially beat/production wise. The relationship between Roc Marciano and KA can be traced back to the GZA giving them placements on his Pro Tools album. Raekwon is on the intro of Westside Gunn's most recent project.

Their legacy and impact can not be minimized.

They have Raekwon, before he’s actually Raekwon and before RZA has started any group planning, spitting a ‘freestyle’ that already mentions “Killah Beez” in the first episode. -__-

That’s a good indicator of the actual interest in accuracy the series seems to aim for.

The Genius has only been in one episode (as Gary/Allah Justice). They're hinting that he's drawing interest.

The 8th episode is supposed to focus on the music side of things, so I suspect it's going to be about Genius' brief run at Cold Chillin' (they've already introduced Easy Moe Bee in a brief cameo).

In fact, I’m four episodes in and Rza still doesn’t have a deal yet.

They’re fictionalizing quite a bit. It works in a “Based on a true story” kinda way

It really give you the true story and tells all the good bad and evil without the acting.

What makes it so dope to me is I was there. Not there, but there.. lol.

I was in Philly for the Greek in 92 and the crew I was with had a dude working for Flava Unit. He wanted us to go see some group called Wu Tang playing that night. It was $20 at the door and we were broke niggas. Dude offered to pay for all of us but we were like nah, let’s just holla at girls on South St. But the sounds coming from inside the club were crazy. Banging beats and sword and king fu sounds. WTF was that?

A few weeks later I’m in BK listening to Bobitto and Stretch and Wu comes in the studio. It was controlled chaos. Then I turned to another station and heard Method Man and it was a wrap

Went back home and told everyone in Pittsburgh about this group and next thing you know they were on Yo MTV scaring the shit out of Ed Lover for joking them earlier in the show.

He said the second season is going to focus on recording "36 Chambers." And bring in the other members of the group, like U-God (Masta Killa was in one of the last scenes in the last ep of the season).

I think focusing on making the album is very much the best idea. Like my homei suggested back in response #1, the stuff about the process and the record business was by far the best stuff about the last season. And it did turn out Episode 8, with the stuff about RZA navigating his record deal, was by far the best ep of the season.
