"Welp, looks like the UK is heading over that cliff"

The no-deal is happening.

"Queen Elizabeth II approved a request by Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday to shut down Parliament for several weeks ahead of Britain’s upcoming departure from the European Union, a startling maneuver that will rob his opponents of time to thwart a no-deal Brexit."

facebook might be the most destructive invention ever.

none of these people would be in power without massive disinfo campaigns and online radicalization by cambridge analytica, the psy group, fsb, etc.

brexit was the trial run for trump, bolsonaro, etc.

rupert murdoch was a pretty bad invention too (and works hand and glove with the aforementioned forces).

There are a lot of ignorant racist ass people in the world. They want to return to glory.

Also a lot of uninformed people who are trolling the establishment by voting for idiots who aren’t “bought and paid for”

Denny was a lot of things but that dude was right about Trump because he watched the Farley dude get elected in Toronto.

People have always been stupid and ignorant of what's going on around them. Even supposedly "smart" people are stupid in their own ways. But when ignorance and misinformation are distributed in a mostly random way, facts might have a means of bubbling up out of the noise.

Social media gives the most satisfying types of misinformation a mechanism to spread, grow, streamline themselves to satisfy the largest possible population. It's like it presents a change in the intellectual climate that makes us more susceptible to the spread of retroviral memes.

apart from having the same actors (e.g cambridge analytica)
it's also been about the gutting of the news media
i just read this article recently about a study that shows that a county that boycotted an EU-skeptic paper their attitude to toward the EU became more positive.
I think people underestimate just how misinformation does shape attitudes (and misinformation from the various sources including facebook bubbles)

"Sun boycott reduced Euroscepticism on Merseyside, study shows"
https://www.ft.com/content/ffdb6e8c-c5c8-11e9-a8e9-296ca66511c9

if that's paywalled, there is this: https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/brexit-sun-boycott-helped-to-cut-euroscepticism-in-merseyside-study-suggests/ar-AAGpTtJ

about the EU, making up new regulations out of whole cloth, for newspapers targeted at low-income, older, conservative white people. Then whenever he was called out on the facts he'd say it was jokes or satire. This was after he was fired from the Murdoch-owned Times for making up a quote.

Maybe this is common knowledge, but I only recently learned it, and it seems like it ought to be reported more. A lot of Americans, even relatively well-informed ones, just know him as a British politician with funny hair.

History rhymes.

He said Trump wasn't racist he was a blank slate. Yeah he said people were anti-intellectual and Trump would win off that, but he was wrong. Trump won cause Dems didn't turn out in the electoral college states.

He changed with the wind. Some bad report came out about Trump and he posted yeah he was doing too much and everybody who disagreed with him about Trump was right, then the next week he was back on the Trump train.

hatred, racism, mental illness, ignorance, etc always existed. its a little different when someone is holding a knife vs holding an ar-15 tho isnt it?

why do dictators/authoritarians set up their own sycophantic media/information outlets when people are already ignorant anyway (as you put it)?

fb is a weapon of mass disinformation where anyone anywhere in the world can lead *highly* targeted campaigns of propaganda aimed at anyone anywhere in the world. they can completely shape large segments of public opinion based on alternate/augmented realities.

it allows people to be misled, radicalized, and mobilized by the millions in short amounts of time.

this is why fringe extremism is now mainstreamed to the point that its the basis of major political parties.

this is why cambridge analytica and various black hat intelligence services across the globe are raking in money from their clients for elections in america, europe, canada, africa, south america, etc.

this is why far right leaders/movements around the world continually thank facebook when they win elections and come to power (trump, duterte, bolsonaro, salvini, etc). they dont thank ignorance.

seriously...if you have some time...you should search around and research how much facebook has aided anti-democratic entities, extreme movements, genocidal campaigns, etc. its far too important an issue for you to continue to overlook/dismiss.

heres a light intro/explainer if you wanna give it a quick skim.

all they have done is say "we dont want this"
and provided no solutions, no proposals, nothing

most who voted leave can't even articulate why
someone i know did... and i asked her why (she's kenyan-british... an immigrant!)
and she was like, tbh i dont even know. i called her an idiot, lol

only for vague reasons like it's better to be in than out, travel across Europe is easier, etc.

Economically and socially? I couldn't say.

Folks who voted leave had some serious concerns about immigration, European bureaucracy, tariffs, etc.

Bottom line for me though is that I don't think Brits consider themselves European and a lot follows from that.

austerity measures from the tories...

i think the bulk of the vote leave thing was immigration (even my friend said this and i was like but how? and you are an immigrant?)
the correlation to the U.S is "they are taking our jobs"
basically blaming the results of austerity on the EU (in my opinion)
also.. apparently the U.K could've restricted immigration, no?

EU bureaucracy- this i find interesting. i'd like to hear some examples of this
so far i haven't heard anything that makes sense.

tariffs - i guess zero tariffs is the goal now? WTO rules are brutal.
giving up all those trade agreements?
its why im on a wait-and-see what happens nov 1st. when the # of FTAs will essentially be zero.

Immigration was the headline grabber but my gut feeling (not based on any facts) is that people were just generally unhappy with the EU.

People have never been happy about the European gravy train and also rules and laws set by unelected people that affect the UK.

My mistake, I meant quotas, not tariffs. Fishing, farming, etc. quotas.

The universal fool who needs not even be named, in America at least.

The sum total of American nihilistic greed, gluttony, rage, fecklessness, envy, and sloth, embodied in an orange carcass in an ill-fitting suit, with a tie adjusted to make his dick seem longer, who says "believe me" after 2% of his most obvious lies and it still seems like a lot.

(Not meaning to speak for legs, of course. This is just what I took him to be referring to.)

Even just a few years ago if someone had told me Trump and Johnson would be heads of their countries I would have laughed.

I guess the laugh is on me.

It seems like the Tories have been falling on their asses for a decade now and Labour has gotten nothing out of it.

It's basically a more realistic "Black Mirror," which makes it scarier. I dug it, but the ending felt tacked-on and sudden.

mos def planning a trip to london/ UK
its been ages since i've been - i was actually trying to remember when was the last time i was there
i used to stop-over whenever i was headed to kenya

all that to say - i really wonder what the economic impact of #brexit will be
the predictions are all dire - and i wonder if at all it can be managed
i'm also looking forward to seeing how the relationship with the EU will be after leaving without a deal
i think most people are assuming that no deal means that's the end of it
even the withdrawal agreement was just the *start* of negotiating the future relationship
and if bojo goes through with *not* paying the £39b - or however much it is now- that's going to be incredibly difficult

oh well. WTO terms!
