Unless college athletes get paid, I just don't see why a kid would want to play.

Most parents now see through the sports addiction hype and refuse to put their children's bodies up for sale for a few years of local town glory.

The head injuries, dashed hopes and broken promises from the sports industry is another bubble waiting to burst. So many people at the top make so much yet so many black and brown athletes' families remain poor. Something is twisted adn I am so happy people are leaving football.

From little league to professional football. Yes, football is an option but why should black people's interest in sports only be relegated to playing? Why not have little leagues for agents, sports announcements, team management, marketing.

Sports is an industry, yet we feel like blacks only role is in playing the sport.

Short sighted, ignorant and racist.

did your brothers, uncles, nephews?

I ask because you seem to be asking why would anyone want to play football which would make a lot of sense as a question if you never played a team sport.

Other than that the idea of little leagues for agents, sports announcements, team management, marketing sound horrible to me.

I agree that sports is an industry which is part of the problem and I think the way to address that problem isn't to make it more of an industry by adding all those roles but rather to make it less of an industry and return to more of it's roots of being a local activity for kids for fun. Year round travel teams that forces kids to play only one sport and focus on it like a career sucks for kids these days.

I would really like to see a deep analysis of how many black kids get rich playing sports. Then I'd like to see those stats broken down by sport. Is football worth the long term mental and physical pain?

How does that so called wealth translate into long term generational wealth for that kid's family?

In response to Reply # 7

Even if make the practice squad you make $129K

Now is it worth it for the physical punishment? Maybe not.

As far as generational wealth. Well, that is up to the player. Hell, I don’t make anything close to 480K and I’ve prolly saved more money for my kids in 3 years than some athletes who live check to check and take out dumb loans to keep up with other players who are balling out.

I’m not saying the system is perfect, it’s far from it BUT these players have chances to make moves and pimp the system while they are in it if they want. Do they want to party and bullshit or take classes that can help them manage their assets?

This thread is about high school ball.

Saying you’re going to make it to the league while you’re playing high school football is almost a punchline at this point.

Seems a bit like saying a lot of people have gotten rich playing the lottery. Doesn't make it a wise investment.

but I wasn’t trying to imply playing HS sports will make you rich.

I was speaking to the college paid athlete angle. Even tho it’s still a tiny fraction of them that make it pro... the risk to them is worth it because you can make generational money inna short amount of time.

and it’s not like the lottery because you have more opportunities to push your numbers up.

Most of us didn’t go pro or even play in college and the majority of us are fine physically and stable financially.

My boss’ son is on the spectrum. I watched my boss break down when discussing his son lying to him about eating lunch with friends when he was sitting alone.

Fast forward this year and he plays football for the first time and his confidence, social circle has exploded.

“Overall sports participation was 7,937,491, a decline of 43,395 from 2017-18.”

Would have to break it out by sport to see if the football participation drop is steeper than the drop in other sports, on a percentage level.
