But that first episode was not great.

Takes awhile for sketch shows to really get going and I love all the people involved. I hope it takes off.

And co-sign that it takes a little while for sketch shows to get going. So I'm definitely giving this one a chance.

it was almost there a few times but the corniness was too strong.

Maybe it’s not for us tho. I wonder how women felt about it.

I can’t front, it kinda reminded me of early K&P

Not sure about the framing device and the sketches tended to run too long but I'll give it a few more episodes.

I can’t believe they are still running that end of the world skit every week. Let that go.

Just feels like some of these skits needed to be shelved but they are going to run them all season. That spy shit def needs to go.

I agree that spy sketch is not working. They should replace that and End of the World with something else, use that time to try out more stuff.

somebody said it last week that there was something special about ol girl doing the dancing at the beginning of ep 3. she gotta be top 3 funniest dancers right now and shes not 3. i dont know who else is in the category i just wanted to say that cuz i hear it a lot. anyway i agree, but you can see that level of talent in all of em (the managing gangster in the monster commercial, thede as standup, etc.)

227 was great. i was never really heavy on it, but this was well done. i like how it was super meta but still true to the show (227 and the sketch).

in 2004/2005, that shit was groundbreaking and anyone saying they didn't laugh is lying.

yes, some of them shits didn't hold up over time, but that goes for LOTS of things.

The riff on it's a wonderful life with boobs? The great new york boobs? The white lady singing opera?
Or was it Redman in a toilet on a jet ski, or was it Dame Dash pushing tampons?
Maybe it was the "zapped" Ashton Kutcher knock off?

By 2000 Dave had already given us Killing Em Softly. Sprinkle some crack on em was magnitudes better than Tyrone Biggums
His "I didn't know I couldn't do that" was better than "zapped" and "nat king cole" in reference to Black White relations
Etc

He could've taken that entire special and made multiple skits out of it and it would've hit harder than those first six episodes

But just in case you felt this was memorable, please watch it again
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-emlb2_jdI
He finishes the skit by saying "that's a wrap"

I think yall are conflating his overall body of work with who his humor evolved to after Chappelle show. He was always Half Baked (legit funny). But his show came after "Killing Em Softly". He tried to dip back into the stoner/def jam humor. And THOSE skits that you love simply didn't hit at the time.

Chappelle's show season one DVD has collected dust in my house since 2007. There's a reason "I'm Rick James Bitch" is the most memorable part of that entire season and that white folks still do Tyrone Biggums impressions.

People were saying "Wrap it up, b" with that skit as a reference.
But you say it was forgettable. That's the complete opposite of forgettable.
Keep the agendas alive tho.

You said...other than a handful of sketches...the first 6 eps were forgettable

Why would people buy it after airing if it was forgettable?

...and in record numbers...

Hint, Rick James bitch was S2...but I know youre smarter than that.

I think it's some sucker shit to try revisionist history with the chapelle show...because most of the initial reactions to the black lady sketch show are not positive

After ep1 of chapelle show = dedicated viewer

After ep1 of black lady sketch show = I'd have to force myself to watch another ep

Muthafukka, the DVD's went on sale AFTER the season was syndicated.

What can we glean from that?

We can glean that a respectable portion of those consumers(50+ percent) were individuals that watched the syndicated season.

Im refraining from giving my thoughts on A Black Lady Sketch Show, but people have the free will to opt out of anything that doesnt strike them, they don't have to even sit through a whole episode

There are only so many comedies that I would scoff at people for not laughing at (Martin, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Arrested Development)

everything else is on a scale based off of sensibilities. I know some people who don't get Seinfeld, and I've seen people laugh at Amanda Seales, which is unfathomable to me

so yeah A Black Lady Sketch Show will touch whoever it's meant to, and no one is obligated to support/like it just because it's us on screen

In response to Reply # 16

I remember being struck that it was something different from when he showed the behind the scenes and the woman's boob popped out. That was not just something you would see in a sketch comedy show. Having known hood celebrities pop up in sketches, that was new.

mOST sketch comedy doesn't age that well. The best ones have their finger on the pulse of what's going on THAT week and isn't that timeless. Shit the first sketch on Chappelle Show is making fun of a commercial no one remembers now. In Living Color is pretty much unwatchable now.

I can see it not seeming like a big deal if you were young at the time or watching it now, but to watch it as a grown up and knowing all the shows that came before it, Chappelle Show was the shit from day one.

First two episodes featured two of the most famous sketches out of the history of the show.

Black Lady is 0/3 in terms of memorable and amazing sketches.

You’re comparing two albums with 1 mega hit each versus three albums of absolute duds.

Bad comparison from the jump.

She is Amanda Seales unfunny. In fact I get the two confused often.

I put them both in the light skin attractive girls who think they are funnier than they actually are because guys laugh at them even attempting humor. Also see Tyra Banks.

Qunita is funny AF though.

The hate is strong in this post but yeah. It will get reviews like "I am glad it exists" or so it can survive my hating.

I think it is brilliant. Even though it isn't funny, it offers some strange social commentary and I like to see different looking black women on screen. Not because of their weaves, size of their butts, athleticism or ability to sing.

There was no shucking and jiving for white audiences.

Brave and outside of the box comedy.

Some of these sketches are so flawed in their conception/writing that I think they're going to need to bring in some new people to the writer's room. Long sketches with abrupt endings is the norm for the first season so far.
