my suspicion is that the corporate entities running these newsrooms are scared and don't want to lose their White House access.

I don't think the Democrats don't care about winning, it's the fact that their base is composed of minorities, liberal whites, and white supremacist-lite (i.e. middle ground voters). They need enough of those 3 to be all in to win.
They have to be careful though because if they say 'the wrong thing', those middle ground voters are swaying to the right and voting 'R'. ADOS and reparations is a good topic for that to happen. But the Black establishment is doing a good job swatting it down.
At the same time, the pursuit of middle ground voters shaves off a portion of the more progressive votes. People get tired of Democrats not standing up for real shit due to fear of scaring off the middle ground so they end up not showing up.
White supremacist-lite might be a harsh term for those middle ground folk. But wait, what Republicans represent now in this present day, and people 'might' vote for it; nah, the term sticks.

If the Me Too movement were about anything besides attacking black men this would be an issue and Trump would face consequences. It's good to know that all this publicity about Me Too falls apart in the face of white privilege.
