"Uber IPO: Should I Buy In? Drivers are invited"

the IPO is May 9th

the email I got says I have until May 7 to open the brokerage account at JPMorganChase and declare how much I intend to spend

I've asked a couple friends to go in with me and so far we only have $1500 LOL but fuck it whatever i can scrape up over the next few days, I'm in.

As this will be my first ever sorta major stock purchase, is there anything i should be wary of?

Good luck.

Lyft IPO was disappointing. Not sure what that means for Uber.

I really want to start buying and holding stock, not sure if I got the stomach for it tho.

I have all my stuff in aggressive portfolios and rarely look at them out of fear I may react.

I think it dips shortly after IPO but then starts to climb in the following weeks.

The people SELLING into the IPO (i.e. the founders and private equity funds) are going to get paid. The people BUYING it will also... eventually.

So really, how long do you plan on holding this investment?

If you're trying to make a quick buck, I wouldn't buy the IPO bc there's a good chance it's going to lose value pretty soon. It may be better to buy in a couple days or a week (depending on how far it falls).

If you're planning to hold long term, then you might as well buy at the IPO price and forget about it for a long time. They're a big player in a huge global market... the stock price will eventually appreciate, even if the company isn't profitable, if they show they're still growing by some measure.

At least a few years?

>If you're trying to make a quick buck, I wouldn't buy the IPO
>bc there's a good chance it's going to lose value pretty soon.
>It may be better to buy in a couple days or a week (depending

so gather the funds, but hold it for after the price dips?

>If you're planning to hold long term, then you might as well
>buy at the IPO price and forget about it for a long time.

ok but if it's likely to dip right away, is it better to wait and not buy at IPO? Like is there any real benefit to getting in at the beginning?

argh, this is so nervewracking LOL

>They're a big player in a huge global market... the stock
>price will eventually appreciate, even if the company isn't
>profitable, if they show they're still growing by some

this is what i'm thinking, but homey below is saying the opposite.

Like he says, there are very high hurdles to Uber's long term viability so there's a high risk of them eventually going bankrupt.

This is a risky investment.

And I'm not a financial planner.

But my feeling is that their stock will likely progress like Facebook's... an initial, significant dip as the market shows it skepticism on the overall valuation of the company... and then a gradual, long term climb as the company starts to prove itself profitable.

People were pretty skeptical about Facebook being profitable and sticking around so the stock was down 50% 3 months after IPO...and here we are, 5 years after the IPO and at 5x the IPO price. I think that's the best case.

The worst case is Snapfish (SNAP). It's been 2 years, they're still below their IPO price and likely headed to zero unless someone buys them out for cheap.

The ipo price estimates puts the value of Uber at around 90-100 billion. That is insane especially given the fact they are losing about $2 billion a year, burning cash, and they flat out said in their prospectus that:
"We expect our operating expenses to increase significantly in the foreseeable future, and we may not achieve profitability"

I don't see path for their growth that brings them the future growth that justifies that valuation (same with Lyft).

Feels like the dot com bubble again where hope is pushing these prices way above their values

My first best option would be to avoid it completely.
Second best would be to by at the IPO price and try to sell shortly afterwards.
My thinking is that in the long term the hopeful exuberance surrounding a lot of these companies will disappear, bringing their prices back down to what they are actually worth. Again, think back to the tech bubble of late 90s.

In the short term, I guess it is possible to capitalize on people's overly optimistic feelings about the future of Uber. But eventually patience will run out.

These are just my opinions though. Obviously people have different outlooks on the future

I see Uber as different than alot of those other kinds of tech companies for two main reasons:

1. they have already made traditional taxis obsolete. There is a whole generation of kids growing up that never heard of a taxi, and see no reason to buy a car. They use Uber and ZipCar for everything

2. Uber isn't just in the rideshare business. they are also developing (and likely stealing lol) other technologies specifically around driverless cars and who knows what else. i see their brand moving into other things, and they may already have those things up their sleeve. their are a worldwide brand like FB, whereas Lyft is only US.

>In the short term, I guess it is possible to capitalize on

I feel that. I'm generally optimistic about them but not overly so.

Seriously thank you for giving me these insights. they are very valuable. I think I'll do a small buy in...that way if i'm only risking 500 (along w/a few other folks), its ok.

I don’t see it.

But what do I know?

Uber is the Facebook of risesharing so it might be a good buy.

Just make sure this isn’t money you need in the next few years.

Today it's around $60.

Twitter, was around $70 a month after it opened. Since 2015 it's been in the $20s or so, up until this summer when it popped up to near $45. Today it's at $38.

On the other hand Facebook, opened at $38 and everyone said dont buy. It's in the $190s now.

That forthcoming Uber pay strike might work in favor of early IPO investors though.

It closed at close to IPO opening price. But like others have pointed out, it's unclear what the strategy is to reach profitability (or break even). And now that they're publicly traded the market expectations are going to impact the stock price.

Devil's advocate: you and your friends have scraped together a pool of money, do you need to invest in Uber specifically? Have you thought about putting all or some of that in a mututal fund?

peace

A lot of mutual funds trade for 10-30/share. Look for no load, no fee funds if you go that route. Morningstar is good for research.

1500 initial investment in a fund or stock that has a good rate of return will blossom well over 10 year period (esp. if reinvest dividends to buy more shares).

Good luck!
