edit: actually i don't think he is free to say what he wants. he is subject to public backlash which i'm sure creates a filter.

the key to happiness is not being rich;
it's doing something arduous and
creating something of value and then
being able to reflect on the fruits of your labor

When has Dave been in some real drama? He seems super lowkey.

Meanwhile, Eddie was WILD. There's questions about his lifestyle that will never fully be answered, but somehow he's maneuvered well enough not to have that one close former associate that wants to destroy his legacy.

You can't talk to a nigga about tranny allegations or "Johnny Gill" when Boomerang or "Coming to America" is on, point blank period.

….that he went crazy and moved to Africa because he didn’t accept the “behind the veil” contracts.
All because he was making satire about racism and didn’t like that people might have just been laughing AT the racism and missing the point of the jokes.

They literally took his whole platform and smudged his image in show business.

He then climbed his way back to superstardom and surpassed his previous level by going back to stand up and just doing him

That’s drama.

because he knows his words carry weight and he can't just talk shit.

lets say hypothetically he has what would be considered a less than progressive opinion on there being too many gender pronouns. he's likely to not express that because he can see ahead to the fox weaponizing that against the trans community.

but it really could be anything. atheism, global politics, race... most things he says even since leaving office are carefully crafted and thoughtful.

just my theory here, being president exposes you to soul of the country, I think in some ways he is freer than some folks we would consider to be the common man but in a lot of other ways hes seen and experienced too much to not be thinking the worst of humanity after seeing the worst of humanity.

Aside from that OUT magazine cover?
All the WWF/E controversies about workers rights and all those wrestlers dying young, he's never spoken out about that either.
Dude is working to maintain and build his brand. To me, that's not free.
Compared to a Chapelle, who actually freely does whatever he wants.

and his brand is very carefully curated. 95% of his posts have no strong opinion being made. i wasn't even aware of this "Finding Justice" effort, they should have promoted it within Black news and social media.

but nah he ain't "free" in that sense.

Evident by that Ebony article.
Which is why to me...he's not the most free.
His priority is his brand as a business. Which is work, that's not free.
Plus, dude works out for at least 6 hours a day...that alone is opposite of being free.

few famous people can live how they want to live..
they can live a certain lifestyle, but many yearn for
moments of obscurity free from bother at times and cannot

Or move about safely with no bodyguard/protection

Or espouse an unpopular viewpoint and not fear reputational
damage or financial loss

Or not have leeches and hangers on etc etc

Riches and fame come with shackles that make a person
less free in my opinion because of the obligations and
responsibilities that come with managing and maintaining it

The most free black person in America is probably someone
off the grid with no debts and enough to comfortably manage whatever
expenses they have and can comfortably move about pursuing
a true passion of theirs.

In response to Reply # 61

In her hospital room the week she died. The last thing she told me "beyond my family, the thing I'm most proud of, is never having had to work for a white man".
She graduated from IU and pledged Delta, on campus, in her 50s. After traveling the world and sending her son to medical school, working a series of jobs--from plucking chickens to various duties at a mortician and being a midwife.
That old woman never weighed over 100lbs and drove until she was 90something and only lived in an assisted living facility the 1 year before she died.
She was free as shit.
Cleaned out her house after she passed, 6 loaded pistols hidden in odd spots throughout he house.
If they had IG back then...

There's a reason why Cameron Terrell, the white Crip from Palos Verdes, got away with being an accessory to murder.

There's a reason why celebrities who commit crimes get away with it. Or get a slap on the wrist.

Money is power in America, and freedom to do as you please and get away with stuff is a perk of that power.

>money is comfort and access to luxury
>
>neither of these have a thing to do with freedom

Even though we've all read the stories about how the famous are much more controlled by expectations and obligations than regular folks. Half these people y'all naming can't even walk down the street without being harassed, or walk away from anything because of commitments/obligations/owing someone.

Fame, by definition, means that they are beholden to those that give them fame (the fans), or allow access to fame (the execs).

I see I have a different meaning of "freedom" than many here as well.

I am fascinated by him. We all knew he probably left a ton of money an the table, by being flaky and having an on-again/off-again football career, but anytime I have seen him interviewed, he seems at peace.

While he messed over a ton of money, he appears financially secure...non extravagant lifestyle, NFL pension, announcing work for the Longhorns, and a foot in the cannabis and new age wellness markets.

I imagine a day in that dude's life is just meditating, doing yoga and smoking the best weed, with a little work and family time mixed in.
