Afropunk Brooklyn 2019 Lineup

Tom Breihan, Stereogum // March 27, 2019

We’ve gotten used to seeing slight variations on the same festival lineups over and over, so it’s always refreshing to see a music festival that has some sense of identity. The Afropunk festival — which has grown from a Brooklyn phenomenon to one that takes place in a handful of cities around the world — has always had a sense of identity. Even as it’s moved further and further from any restrictive definition of the word “punk,” the festival has taken in a bunch of different discursive examples of music that reflects black experience, grouping them all under a single umbrella. And today, the Brooklyn version of the festival has announced its 2019 lineup. It’s a good one.

This year’s Afropunk Brooklyn festival is coming to Commodore Barry Park 8/24-25. FKA twigs, who really doesn’t play enough shows and who has gone a long time without releasing music, is one of the headliners. That’s a good thing since she’s a great performer, and it’s also a good thing because hopefully it means she’s got something new on the way. (The M3LL155X EP came out way the hell back in 2015, and LP1, her sole album, came out a year before that.) Twigs will share headliner duties with Jill Scott, the veteran neo-soul powerhouse, and Kamasi Washington, the astral jazz traveler.

The rest of the bill also features genuine famous people like Leon Bridges and Gary Clark Jr., and it cuts a wide swath across a whole bunch of genres. Santigold, Danny Brown, Death Grips, GoldLink, Lianne La Havas, Toro Y Moi, Nao, Tierra Whack, J.I.D, Rico Nasty, Ravyn Lenae, Leikeli47, Earthgang, Kari Faux, Junglepussy, and many others are slated to perform. Check out more info here.

...or even rock at all. I get that the event has grown, but it seems a step away from Essence Fest levels of black mainstream-ness now.

I like his work but he's markedly different than most of the acts in the lineup this year.

Why? Too mainstream now? It’s not free no mo? Doesn’t feature enough actual punk artists? Too much look-at-me shenanigans?

They issued a cease and desist letter to two friends of mine for something that would be a dope part of the festival. They have totally abandoned the spirit of punk, the spirit of the Black Rock Coalition.

I understand. Speaking of the Black Rock Coalition, I met Greg Tate the year D’Angelo was a headliner. Nice dude.

You must love the spirit of the Black Rock Coalition more than Greg does, since Greg has no problem playing there this year, BRC spirit there or not.

”In 2019 Burnt Sugar The Arkestra Chamber will celebrate two decades of ‘never playing anything the same way once’. As always we give tribute to our sonic Sensei, The Maestro Lawrence Butch Morris (1947–2013) for showing us THE WAY of Conducted Improvisation. Over the course of 18 albums we’ve covered a broad panopoly of styles and genres. Consider BSAC’s “20th Anniversary Mixtapes Groiddest Schizznits Volume One, Two and Three,” as 2019 invitational samplers–AstroBlack stargates to our many-splendored darkly energetic & celestial realm of cosmic riddim, esoteric rambunction, eclectic blue cheer & Oh …The Utter Negrocity Of It All..."

are already sold out. Advance VIP tickets for Sunday are still left, though.

Sunday always seems to be less popular, though I can think of times when top headliners played that day. Last year, it was Erykah. In 2014, it was D'Angelo. He was late and I missed my bus back to Boston, where I needed to be to catch my flight back to Michigan. Lots of folks were pissed because they had buses/trains/flights to catch to get back to work the next day.

It felt like Halloween. Also it was way too crowded. They either need a bigger venue or to sell less tickets.

It's been going downhill, though I think food truck and retail product vendors have probably improved over the years.
