"How often do you play hooky from work?"

My wife and I plan "sick" personal days so we can spend a day BSing together. We plan them like every 2 months. My favorite excuse, is an upset stomach, I just tell me boss and co-workers I'm like the guy from America Pie, can only go at home.

I used to work for a huge insurance company and you could accumulate paid time off. And every year or so you accumulated another half day a month. I couldn't take it fast enough haha. And I used to rent summer houses from Memorial Day thru Labor Day in Newport every summer so for the 5 years I did that I legit took 3 full consecutive weeks off and just fucking lounnnnnged on the beach.

And even with those 3 weeks and various other long weekends, etc. I'd still have time to kill at year end so I wouldn't lose it. So I'd typically just take the holidays off.

Then when I left the company I had so much time built up that I got a check for the unused time a few weeks later for several thousand dollars haha. So that was fucking dope.

Now I am able to work remotely much of the time, then I got a few weeks vaca for the year and "unlimited" sick time, tho I rarely use it. Nice to have tho, but typically if I'm not feeling right I just plug in from home. Obviously considering all that, my freedom isn't all that much different than it was at that old gig, but I do miss looking in the system to see that I have like 11 weeks of unused time lol.

we have 5 days paid sick time but they arent considered "Excused" unless its FMLA which is ridiculous

so i just use my vacation days on a whim when i dont feel like going in

my team is flexible enough to where its not impacting anyone negatively if i dont come in

That's *WILD*.

Every company needs to offer unlimited sick time. I'm sorry but 5 days in a year ? Fuck you. What if I am just prone to illness ? (I'm not but I'm sticking up for the guy who is ! Haha)

That's fucked up.

Most PTO days I’ve ever had at a gig.

I need to start planning them out wisely.

It’s a good idea to plan them with the wife.

too short handed, and being out requires someone else to extend their shift to cover mine, so I'll only call in with good reason.

If I request time off, I pretty much always get it, and I'm on 4 weeks vaca per year, but as far straight hooky days, I probably wont do it unless we're slow, and I'm not putting it on someone else

I'm curious how much time I end up taking off. My mentality was always to stockpile PTO, carry over the max into the next year and always have plenty just in case I needed it, but usually just ended up cashing it out when I left the company.

The big difference to me is that when I want to take a vacation, I don't have to count days here or there or worry about having enough left. Like I used to come back from a trip on a Thursday and go to work Friday so I wouldn't use an extra day. Now? Fuck that. I just go for however long I want to go for (within reason). I don't really ever just take random days off though. I probably should.

I think I took two last year, we don't have short term disability anymore so they gave us the equivalent in sick days and those roll over every year to a 45 day cap.

Right now I'm sitting on so much annual leave its ridiculous. It just keeps rolling over from the previous year and that's even with me taking a few vacations a year. At this point when I retire I can buy about an extra three years to add on to my percentage.

Sick leave I can only cash in half of it, and I have so many hours in that I'd be a fool not to take me a day here or there. I earned it so I'll just use it.

Of course you don't say that when you let them know you won't be in. You do the old "My stomach is jacked up I won't be into work today".

Its good to sometimes just chill on that day, or go out and do something cool on the hours you'd normally be at work. It's refreshing as hell to have that middle of the work week day off.

Matter of fact, I may take me one off next week just because.

All coughing and feeling gross laying in the bed on a day off from work when I could be out there doing something fun. I'm more likely to just go to work at sick and use a sick day later to call out when I'm perfectly fine.

you can add sick leave to your time for retirement

and cash out on your annual leave..

I'm currently in use or lose status so in essence I have to use that time before they take it away..

I use it whenever I feel like chilling or working from bed watching TV.

Like, I still be working if it's something important, but then i can do whatever the fuck I want during downtime without the pressure of 'looking busy.'

I got 23 days to take for the year. I tend to hold onto them because I know the kids will need me to do something with school or if they get sick.

good thing is I can work from home if I have to, so I need to take more random days for nothing.

i'm rarely sick but i have days where my anxiety and/or depression are wrecking me. i should call in on those days but i don't. today is one of those days as i had a 6 hour anxiety attack last night and maybe got a few dozen minutes of sleep. the issue is that our tardy and attendance policy are one and the same. i have 2 call-ins in almost 3 years but since i was late (like 2-3 minutes) 7 times over the past 11 months i'm on a write-up and can't call in sick without risking disciplinary action

I wish you well with your anxiety.

How much does the attendance policy add to that anxiety? (don't have to answer, just curious)

it doesn't. i'm just on a bad schedule: 1:30 PM to 10:00 PM - 1:30 AM depending on several factors. really unpredictable and not great for sleeping (or anything, really). trying my best to manage my anxiety with exercise, mindfulness, diet, etc. but since i'm not on any meds i occasionally have really awful days

Think that would help a little? Playing with some friendly people to maybe take your mind off things?

Just checking to see if that's something that would help a little.

Hope shit gets better dude. Let me know if it's anything I can help with.

In response to Reply # 38

Working from home has revealed what a joke office culture is. Whenever I go into the office, I spend so much time ducking non work conversations and fruitless social interactions.

Working from home is truly for the self managed. I know that some people can't work from home but for those who can, the world is brand new.

I feel like I can really be a present parent and take care of my life without rushing back and forth into the office.

In response to Reply # 0

I kind of feel out how the month is going/what our bookings are looking like in the upcoming weeks, pick out a video game or a series of movies/restaurants I want to check out, and ask for the week off. I don't always get the whole thing (last year I wound up having to come in for a Friday night) but since I never go on vacation the people I work with understand even if I'm staying in the city I'm just asking for the same thing they do when they go to Chicago or Vancouver.

Usually when the weather is nice and I need a break from the passive-aggressive office nonsense.

Just took off kinda randomly last Thursday to go skiing with mini-me's class.

I wanted to do Black Friday with my mom one year and called out like "Oh man, I'm like, throwing up all over the place." Came home after being out in the cold & rain and was lay-on-the-bathroom-floor sick as shit for real.

Another time, I went to the dentist on Thursday and didn't have enough money to pay for the procedure. I went the next day to pay the rest of the money and was like, almost crying that I wasn't making enough to get my teeth cleaned. I called out of work like "Fuck y'all niggas" and spent all day at like, 3 movies.

most of my work is done "in the field", I just have to show my face in the office between 8-830 and I can disappear the rest of the day if I want, as long as my work gets done and I reply to emails nobody questions me. If you spend too much time in the office it is assumed that you don't have enough to do and you get stuck with bullshit lol.
