I know white people arent really to be trusted but somehow I still can’t imagine all the “good” whites people siding with the alt right right now at the explicit expense of everyone else ... but now that I’ve typed that out ... it could totally happen.

Anything to keep from being haunted by a fear of indiscriminate violence. What sense of community they must have developed in order to stay vigilant in the face of indifference to suffering.

So the rampant racism of Reconstruction was actually a step up from the Antebellum. Black people were immediately attempting to assert themselves in different areas to gain representation. That's not much--but I'm guessing that that was something to those people.
Having said that, I most definitely would've ended up a dead Negro if I existed back then.
