Was really the only time he's been at all interesting to me. Like handle says below, I think he's too redundant for me. Mid-tempo, monotone, auto-tune ... pretty boring for me in terms of replay value.

But I recognize how talented and savvy he is, no doubt. He's lasted this long in the business for a reason. He just isn't for me, besides SFG.

Sees someone else with a style and adds on to their energy.

I remember people being very on board with ovo at the time though. Maybe it was in other circles.

Asking SINCERELY.

Because all I've hear (and I haven't listened to a whole album) is that slow rapping or poor singing with auto-tune effects over repetitive beats or faux-chipmonk trap.

I know he's one of the most sucessful and popular of all time - not denying that.

Do you have recommendations on what to listen to for people who think rappers like Kool G Rap, Q-Tip, BDK, KRS-ONE, etc are the greats.

Links to proof?

Like does he have an amazing song or 5 that I could listen to? because , honestly, everything I've heard on the radio (mainly in the gym) has not been all time great status.

I won't deny I could be a Sintra lover who's trying to tell a teenager that Michael Stipe is not "one of the greatest singers ever" in 1988.

hes not a lyricist. he is at his worst when he tries straight up rapping or singing. his sing/rap songs are where he is at his best. if that is not your style then you wont like him.

ill leave it for actual fans to recommend his best songs.

is it "respect" of peers (even then on what level)?

is it sales (that seems problematic because the defintion of a "sale" has even changed)?

is it awards or critical praise?

can greatness REALLY be objective, or it is ALWAYS subjective (you like what you like, and I don't have to - right?

be it sports, music, whatever

In response to Reply # 8

I don't know if there's a more influential hip-hop artist (and this is all tough to say, considering his latest antics) than Kanye.

Drake is easily one of the biggest 3 hip-hop artists in the new millennium. And Drake has probably had more hits. But I feel like they come and then go. They don't have the cultural impact that some of Kanye's things have had.

This isn't to say that Drake isn't huge. The cat is consistently coming #1 hits. I just don't think he's had the all around impact that Kanye has.

...I have a producer friend who likes him and he told me I would like 'em if I heard him over some boom-bap beats, and I told him I've already heard him over a few traditional hip-hop beats and it was decent, but me changing my mind that he's dope is whole other story.

He told me he was going to make a greatest hits remix album just to shut me up but still haven't seen him do it yet; he said he was going to take all his hits accappellas and edit out the singing and put them over his own boom-bap beats, I wouldn't mind hearing it, but when I bring up this conversation, he always act like he's working on it, lol.

I'm like Handle, that's good y'all like Drake but for me, he's not my cup of tea.

music, especially once the Millenials get old enough to become nostalgic (the older ones in their mid-30s already are). And I say this as someone who's not in love with his stuff at all. But he's had nonstop success for 10 straight years. Always has big, popular songs in heavy rotation, constantly. No other male in black popular music can say that since maybe Jay-Z's prime between '98 and '08.

Nobody needs to validate whatever it is you're into.

But you really got clowned back then? I feel like the general sentiment towards Drake was mostly positive on here back then? Could be remembering wrong.

I'll never think he's THAT dude, but we can't deny he's solidified his place in the pantheon as much as anyone else.

First saw him with Lil Wayne perform "all the girls" in like Miami heat with a winter jacket on: cornball. he's been trying too hard ever since in my opinion. Some nice lines here and there, but I wouldn't be caught dead with any of his catalog in my rotation.

The Drake run is one of the most unprecendebted runs in history. He checks all of the get blackballed boxes from a decade ago yet he still here.

actual stans say Nothing Was The Same was his last great album

I'll never take away from his ability to write a song and cook up a melody, but mans only raps well when he feels like it, which hasn't been frequent in I don't know how long

rapping about the shit women and certain men like to hear doesnt make you an all time great, it just makes you very popular
