"Poll question: At what price do you cancel Netflix at?"

Link: https://www.theverge.com/2019/1/15/18183602/netflix-subscription-price-raise-us-streaming-plans

The service’s most popular plan will increase from $11 to $13 per month for HD streaming. Netflix’s most expensive plan, which offers 4K content and up to four simultaneous streams on different devices, will increase from $14 to $16. And the service’s basic plan, which doesn’t offer HD, will raise from $8 to $9.

---

Netflix is spending money recklessly/smartly (you choose the word - I choose recklessly) to get A LOT of low quality AND high quality content.

Then they pass this cost to you.

Are things nearing a tipping point for you?

For me, I sub to the 4k 4 device plan and my mother and a poor friend are on it - so I'm stuck subscribing unless I want to hear people complain.

But I find that - for me - their content is hard to discover - too many things are being placed on it with little promotion - and too many things leave without me every knowing they were there in the first place.

Alfonso funded half of it and found the other funding to complete it.

He went with Netflix cause he said in addition to a theatrical release, everyone everywhere could see his film which is a hard sell.

In response to Reply # 0

im trying to see if i can still pay for it using google credit, if so im set lol

i only need it on one device at a time so its all good. im happy with the resolution it has.

the price increase news did make me think about it though. i am probably okay with it creeping up to about $15 eventually. after that, maybe before, i would pay for a month then cancel for a few.

its the streaming service i mostly rely on but i will go weeks without watching it, especially after i got this switch.

i really need to look into canceling prime.

This makes no sense to me, but I have cable and tired of seeing reruns of shows I hated when they were originally out, I'm just surprised how much viewership this show has on a network that has so much more to offer.

Next they will be saying that their 2nd highest viewed show is "Everybody Loves Raymond" or some dumb shit like that.

The women are bananas level gorgeous - and they round robin screwed each other until the brother and sister were up next ---so they brought in outside "talent' for both the girls and guys.

It's a shallow show that goes down easily - with lighting and production values that don't look 100 years old. Cheers is a much better show for most of the run but it looks less "shiny" and deals with darker themes like alcoholism and being alone.

Parks and Recs is up there - and that shows goes down easy because it's funny.

If Scrub was shot in HD - or remastered it'd get higher up too.

Parts of Season 5 and the beginning of Season 6 is bumpy at times, but it gets back into form in the back half of Season 6 and finishes really strong in Season 7.

It seems like they're going to have their own streaming service this year and going to have all the stuff they removed from Netflix, but you right, now that these companies see how much money can be made, they're jumping ship and creating their own mini-yachts, before you know it, it's going to be so many of them, they're going to end up going right back to a doing what a cable service is meant to be, a way people can get all in one package instead of having to pick which streaming network they want to pay for.

Stranger Things season 2 was kinda lackluster...
Bandersnatch was some overhyped bullshit....
They STAY suggesting lame ass stuff for me to watch and eventually I cave and watch the bullshit because I get tired of browsing for some good shit and then they suggest MORE bullshit because they thing I actually LIKE that bullshit they suggested last go around because I clicked on it out of desperation to actually watch some shit on an Friday night instead of browsing aimlessly for 2 hours....

i've seen a lot of Netflix's best stuff over the last few years, and it might be time to see what some of the other services offer as a change of pace. That's not really even related to price, though.

I don't watch that much stuff on it. 90% of it is garbage and its overwhelming to sort through. Honestly if they could just somehow hide that 90% I would be fine with the price. They need to open up their API so that Apple TV can put Netflix content in the TV app too.

I’ve seen all the old shows on there that I want to see at this point. A few others that I’m mildly interested in, but don’t care that much. It kinda sucks for movies. I have yet to enjoy one of their original series. I’ve got Amazon Prime video, and Hulu/Showtime for like $6 a month. I’m not going over 10 for Netflix.

Still cheaper than Hulu and HBO, and the increase now matches Amazon's monthly prime service.

I can't say when too much is too much. But for now..... its cool.

The increase allows Netflix to make more original programming I wont see anywhere else. The Chappelle and Chris Rock specials were a reason for me to stay with them this long. Then there's Black Mirror and other programming I cant see anywhere else short of Kodi.

so this price hike... i'm okay with it.

Basically. Until Disney takes over Hulu with a 60% majority stake once the Fox merger starts.

As long as it's cheaper than what I was paying for one premium cable channel, I'm good.

HBO's retail cost is like $15 to $20 if I remember correctly. You get all of the NetFlix library for less than that.

I should’ve months ago, it’s a luxury I keep around mostly just so I can scroll through what they’ve got before going back to Netflix, HBO or YouTube.

So I guess my answer is, once Netflix costs more than Netflix + Hulu.

We use it almost every day for at least 2-3 hours. I have no major complaints (4k plan). We don't use it often to watch movies so the random, changing selection doesn't really bother me and the combination of originals plus shows we'll never tire of (Park & Rec, The Office), kinda guarantee it would take a lot to go wrong for us to leave.

especially in comparison to what I was paying for Direct TV for over 10 years. Even with Netflix and Hulu it's only a quarter of what I was spending for that. And before you say Kodi, I use that too, but sometimes I want to get right to shit and I appreciate Netflix's ease of use and also lack of buffering at times.

entertainment streaming services combined. Not as bad as I thought, so I'll keep Netflix and try to use it better.

Netflix $10.99
Google Play Music $7.99
Amazon Music $7.99
YouTube TV $40.00

My internet service is $86 and that's because I've been too lazy to buy the FiOS Quantum router and stop paying that stupid monthly rental fee for it...

So all in i'm at around $153...technically if you back out the $16 for music streaming services, it's a little better....around $137. I would still like to get the TV portion lower though....

I have to get better at curating my watch list.

Plus you can download a lot of shows/movies to your phone and watch offline. Which is great for long road trips

I also need to buy a router or find a way to reduce my internet bill.

Why do you have both google play music and Amazon music?

I have Spotify and it covers all of my music needs.

Is Youtube TV worth the 40 per month?

to that, have no adds on YouTube is the Bees Knees! I was on the cusp of dropping Google Play Music until they added YouTubeRed to the deal..
I ended up getting Amazon Music because we have Amazon Echo device in the house and it's really the easiest way to just play music without a bunch of fuss. The kids music selection also seems to be better on Amazon Music than on any other service....kinda weird.

So far, yes, YouTube TV seems worth it. The ONLY downside is that it doesn't work on FireStick so I had to get a Roku. It's got all the channels I normally watch and the interface is top notch. I think their cloud DVR was the most robust of the bunch. The only other service i'd tried was Sony's...and they just got crazy with their pricing.....

https://www.polygon.com/2019/1/15/18183611/netflix-subscription-price-increase

The basic, cheapest plan, which allows you to stream movies and television shows on just one device in standard definition, will increase from $7.99 to $8.99 a month. The standard plan, Netflix’s most popular option — which allows you stream simultaneously on two devices and in high definition — will increase from $10.99 to $12.99 a month. Netflix’s premium plan, which allows four devices to stream simultaneously and in 4K, will increase from $13.99 to $15.99 a month.

For me I've watched Netflix very little in the last few months - Prime has better movies, and hulu has a lot of TV - I'm going to talk to the other folks on my account and see if they'll flip if I cancel.

If I'm being honest, I'd pay $40-50 per month for Netflix and be fine with it. I'm paying $45 per month for Playstation Vue to watch live TV (still way less than I was paying with cable) and me and my family still watch way more Netflix than anything else.

I'm sure we aren't the only family in that position. Netflix knows that. They are WAY underpriced vs what they could be charging...the game changed when all the streaming services came out, charging 3-4 times the amount of a Netflix subscription, and I'm sure their market analysis is giving them hard numbers on this fact. They likley have a specific price point they want to reach and will gradually keep increasing until it gets there.

There weren’t enough things there that I was interested in watching. Canceling the Marvel shows sealed the deal for me. I have at least one friend who obsessively goes on deep dives to find interesting stuff on Netflix, but I’m not a treasure hunter, I’m not gonna spend an hour looking for something to watch LOL. They used to do a better job recommending things but their algorithms seemed to go to shit the past year or so, almost nothing they send me alerts on is something I want to watch and their percentage system of gauging how much I want to watch any given piece of content is always WAY off of late.

Honestly I don’t care that much about TV anyway, if you can even call Netflix TV (it’s just HBO via the internet to me LOL). I did get one of those OTA antennas for those rare occuasions that I decide to watch something, if I’m at home and actually remember.

Peace,

Spirit (Alan)

In response to Reply # 0

They added a bunch of soccer mom channels I never watch like HGTV to justify the need to increase. At this point YTTV (and I'd bet other streaming services soon to follow) are just becoming cable. The whole point of streaming services was to cut cable due to all the useless channels we were paying for. YouTube TV already had all the channels I needed it for (mainly just the channels for live sports) so this is just a 25% increase for me with no added value. I'm out after the NBA playoffs.

Keep it up and i'm switching back to Sony...their interface was better IMO and the only reason I stuck with YouTubeTV was the lower cost.
The fact that they don't have a Amazon FireTV app sucks too...

have 0 interest in any of the new channels. What I'll probably end up doing is cancelling YTTV once the NBA playoffs are done, then pick it back up in the fall. My boy hooked me up with the free mlb.tv (he's got t-mobile) so I'm kinda set for the summer.
I do love the UI and DVR features, so I don't think I'm switching to Vue or Hulu to save like $5. Sling is tempting but the quality was mediocre last time I tried them

Don't get me wrong its still cheaper than cable, but I don't like where this is heading. The good thing is I'm not locked into a contract with any of them. If I don't like what I see then I'll switch in a heartbeat .

launching November 12th. already hinting the price will increase. it will have all 30 seasons of the simpsons at launch. 10 years ago that might have been enough for me.

i need to see what series they will have. i dont rewatch movies often and most movies that they might make exclusive i would probably see in theaters. it is interesting that theyre under cutting netflix on price. they own enough content that they could make it a must have once the current deals expire.

especially the original content. they wouldn't be able to justify the higher price out the gate. but the potential that Disney has is astounding. they've already announced at least 3 or 4 Marvel series, 1 Star Wars series, 1 Disney live action film and some Disney animated stuff including Pixar. not to mention they're talking about possibly bundling a package with ESPN+ & Hulu. looks like they got a good start.

Hastings and Co are not dumb enough to just price people out. They know who their clients are. They know who shares their plans with their siblings/kids/friends. The algorithm keeps churning out just the right thing to keep someone in your fam addicted. There will be people that jump ship for this or that reason, but its not like they're just gonna go from $15 to $30. The price jumps are just incremental enough to test their users. If they see a big enough drop-off after a jump, they'll scale back. I wouldn't be surprised if they even launched a $5 Ad-supported version, or a version the limits binges to x episodes a day for like $1/month. Just for the fuck of it. I also assume a massive merger is on the horizon with either hulu/disney/amazon/apple one of the other big players to make the stream even MORE convenient and even MORE attractive. I actually wouldn't be surprised if one of the big cable players got bought out or vice versa by netflix so they can finally offer live sports or channels...

The days of $150/month standalone cable are probably over, but the average consumer is happy spending 40-60 a month for Netflix+++ rather than actually go OTA. OTA is still too complicated for the average person. Even if its not actually too complicated, it FEELS like a pain in the ass.

I want to institute this model for a bunch of services I'm getting 9.99'd on. Netflix is the one where it is most viable FOR ME. But my wife and daughter stay up on Netflix so they might not be down. We shall see. But I'll the idea of having it half the time and not the other half. I need to do the same thing with WWE network while I'm at it.

Especially since I stopped caring about the current product enough to want to watch the new PPVs in real time.

About once or twice a year I’ll get the desire to watch a bunch of old stuff, so I’ll reactivate. After a month, I’m more than good for awhile though.

Now that MLB is over, I even dropped my Hulu Live. There’s no way I’ll be getting my $50 worth, until NBA starts again.

Right now I have the full ride on the big streamers; Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney/Hulu/ESPN+.

It works because I just subscribe to Netflix Basic; Prime is worth it for the shipping and other services: and the Disney bundle is at a break off price for a year, since I have Verizon.

That's it for me. There are some other streamers I wouldn't mind; DAZN, UFC Fightpass, Crunchyroll, Britbox, NLF...etc. But, no way am I paying for more than three streamers at a time.

Once my Disney deal is done and/or Netflix goes up even more, I may start juggling. Prime is the only one worth consistently keeping.

for my primary use of Amazon Prime. We literally buy more than 75% of things from Amazon. Groceries, Stuff, Goods, Gifts, etc... bout the only thing we DON'T buy from Amazon is gas...
And we take full advantage of the shipping & Free Returns perks.

Disney though...good thing i'm getting it as part of Verizon...that'd be the one service i'd drop with the quickness. The interface is trash and it seems like a lot of the kids shows are missing episodes and seasons.

We def. watch Netflix the most....
I probably don't NEED to keep YouTube TV...but the interface is the best of all the services that offer network TV....that works best for when the technology challenged parents come visit..

I’m not getting rid of anything because I get what I want when I want it for the most part but after this. Verizon deal ends.. we’ll see.

Yeah, I might have to be more mindful of my subs here shortly. There are entire months I go without logging into Netflix, but it always gave me piece of mind having options between them, Hulu and Amazon (through an ex), but now that my mom's canceled HBO I've been paying for Max since it started and also not using that for much beyond a John Oliver delivery service half the time...which I can just watch on Youtube...

Might just switch to Hulu exclusively for Fargo and the other FX stuff I still need to catch up on and let the movie chips fall where they may...though Netflix's is pretty strong right now...but I don't use it...lol I always knew streaming would get more complicated than cable at some point!

especially when all the major studios have their own app and more exclusive deals happen they will HAVE to raise prices in order go stay competitive and bid on those exclusive properites, actors, directors etc. It’s heading that way and we most likely see commercials similar to how they are on YouTube because Netflix won’t be able go continue not making money. No different than talk radio going from terrestrial radio to streaming podcasts having commercials. This shit is cyclical

You cancelled cable for the price.

You’re not cancelling Netflix, likely your preferred method of binging shows, for a 15-20 dollar price point. You’re not. You’re the people who SAY you’re gonna move if Trump wins, but you won’t.

Will you are SOME price? Yeah. But under 20 bucks is not that price. Especially if you’re a cord cutter. Stop lying.

Kids are morons and need quantity over quality - so Netflix is gold to them.

Some people will watch whatever Netflix recommends in the first 5-10 lines. If they get to the Romantic Comedies section and Netflix shoves Space Force there then they'll consume it. Perfect for them.

Some people want to view all the available selections, determine what we want to watch and then actively watch it in the order we want.

I'm the third type, so I can cancel for a few months and re-up for a month - consume what I am interested in - then cancel again.

Disney+ too, but their library doesn't appeal to adults much.

Hulu, Amazon and HBO are trash in that regard.

The extra dollar doesn't bother me all that much. I just feel like I'm using it less and less, and the gets higher and higher.

The price is creeping up on being looked at as an actual bill instead of just some unconscious spending

103. "not sure what i would sign up for anymore"
In response to Reply # 0

pretty much all their must watch shows are over or not as good anymore.

im sure at some point in the year there will be some new show everyone is raving about. might sign up for a month at that time.

having disney+/hulu for free should be enough once the marvel and star wars shows start rolling out.
