"these ‘self serve’ checkouts and the people that dont like them"

i dont get the hate they receive

i dont mind checking myself out but have come across a few that loathe these things

i see McDonalds has gone nationwide with their kiosk systems. i used one the other day (they STILL got my order wrong), its just a matter of time before the other fast food chains follow suit.

my aunt swore McDonalds was going to have to pay their workers more money, how much longer until your food is all made by a machine with only a skeleton crew there to make sure the machines are working?

using the kiosk at McDonalds was cool, would of been better had the food been right.

jobs. the automation takes them away. I get it. I worked in tech. we're all doomed lol, but I hate seeing lower payscale workers have the rug pulled from under them.

walmartz doesn't always have them open. what's the point, especially when you only have 2 cashiers and 87 people in line?

with that said, I use them when I feel like it. I actually like the interaction of a good customer service person.

there are times when i will go with a cashier instead. if im getting clothing or electronics with those things they have to take off.

mostly i will just pick the shortest line. it isnt always cashiers or automated.

universal basic income has to seriously be considered.

i couldnt stand going into the walmart anymore. just know that you need to order stuff a day ahead. cant order same day. at least not in my experience.

also, they might substitute an item. they send you a notification if they do so you can review if you want to accept it or just refuse the item.

more of my business with the whole Pick Up In Store option.
I spent way more than normal at physical stores than at Amazon this past holiday season. And i'm not talking gifts, just ordinary stuff that i'd been buying on Amazon over the past few years out of convenience and novelty.

Best Buy & Home Depot have notably stepped their game up in this regard. I had virtually written Best Buy off 4 years ago. But their new business model and store arrangement seems to be on the right path. I actually enjoy going in there again...a

i was able to use it on black friday (thursday) and avoided all the lines and got to go once i felt like it lol

if its at best buy i will usually still walk around and browse to see if anything catches my eye. target or walmart though, straight to the pick up section. i like how my target has their section right in the front as you come in.

something i havent tried but im curious about is albertsons doing grocery deliveries. i tried to do it a few weeks back but it said it wasnt available even though their app keeps pushing me to do it. *shrug*

I love going to Walmart or the grocery store by myself. Shit is entertaining.

I keep saying I will try the online grocery pickup but it feels like some isolation type shit. Not trying to have someone else pick my produce. Especially at Walmart. Also seems like some “I hate people” shit.

youre not wrong about picking produce though. i dont buy produce at walmart but yeah i dont know that i would be okay with having someone else pick it for me.

i dont mind the grocery store. it doesnt get too full. i am anti-social though so an empty store would be perfect lol

and we've tried all the delivery services over the years...none of them left me 100% satisfied so we always reverted back to traditional grocery shopping...

even parking is a big hassle. i feel like barry sanders when i go to a walmart. constantly juking folks. a late night trip when its mostly dead isnt bad.

not to mention i always end up spending at least $100 no matter what i was planning on buying.

im limiting walmart to once a month or two.

but I have heard folks.. mostly old heads on my timeline saying they will never use them because they aren’t trying to do the stores job for them.

The new McDonalds by the house has the kiosk. Shit is weird because I think I still had to pay a cashier for my order. It was new so maybe they weren’t all the way up and running. Felt like an extra step to get the same thing done.

The one by the crib gives you the option to pay at kiosk or at cashier

The REAL trippy shit imo is the drive through.. You get a voice that starts talking to you and when you respond you realize that aint eeeeennn the drive through person there is a whole OTHER person you now have to talk to..

Think it has to do with their drive through call center experiment

Did this at Taco Bell a little while ago, and I was the only one in line. I put my order in and get to the point where I choose to pay at the kiosk or the register. And this is all happening maybe 4 feet from the register itself, so the guy can see me. Either I'm choosing to tell the cashier "sorry, I'm going to go ahead and complete my order without having to interact with you" or "I could do this myself, but I'm going to make you do it." Either way I feel like I made the wrong choice.

I try and think back on my days cashiering and what I would've preferred if this had been around, but honestly I would've been mad at whatever the customer chose.

Used to be, to make a phonecall, you needed Myrtle at Ma Bell to patch you through. Used to be that filling up your gas tank was Petey's first job out of high school. If you change your own oil or windshield wipers, you're 'taking somebody's job.' If you're using an ATM, you're 'taking somebody's job.' If you use TurboTax, somebody's job.

Technology is always gonna change how the workplace looks.

We'll end up paying one way or another for those people (who by definition don't have the education and skills to be doing something else) to be suddenly out of work.

In response to Reply # 0

Didn't have too much otherwise, and the checkout lanes were crowded

I go to the self-check out terminals

...but I can't buy a gift card...

so I had to buy all of my stuff

and then get back in line to buy a single item

FOH.

26. "As they install these we SHOULD increase government aid"
In response to Reply # 0

Each of the self checkouts need to be taxed at the same rate per day as a average wage worker's payroll taxes and pay for aid of people who are put out of a job.

Also, when you have 5 items it's fine - but trying to buy $200 in groceries is a bad experience.

In response to Reply # 0

are still staffed by employees, at least that's been the case for the majority of times I've used them. In former Parkmark stores I've been in that used them and the BJ's that currently uses this device, a store employee oversees the four or six machine station and provides assistance if the machine for some reason doesn't work. The self-check out machines I've seen in Home Depot don't have that human worker, at least from what I've noticed.

I have no clue what you're referring to. At all. Then again, I'm rarely in Home Depot and when I am, I'm strictly focused on getting my items, purchasing them, and leaving. The quicker the better.

Basically, right above the machine, there's a screen that says "ANTI THEFT RECORDING IN PROGRESS" in flashing letters and shows video of the machine watching you ring up your stuff.

Now it makes complete sense why I never saw it or paid much attention to that screen; my eyes are strictly focused on the display monitor to ensure I correctly scan the items and correctly place them on the trey so that I can quickly purchase my goods and leave the store as soon as possible.

In EVERY fucking aisle of the "grooming"/makeup section.
They make a beeping noise at you when you walk past them. It's in a nice rural area. I want to smash them. If they were just there I wouldn't notice or give a shit. But the beeping noise pisses me off. Makes me want to steal the damn toothpaste on principle.

44. ""Poo found on every McDonald’s touchscreen tested *swipe*"
In response to Reply # 0

https://metro.co.uk/2018/11/28/poo-found-on-every-mcdonalds-touchscreen-tested-8178486/

Traces of faeces have been found on every single McDonald’s touchscreen swabbed in an investigation by metro.co.uk. Samples were taken from the new machines that have been rolled out at restaurants across the country – every one of them had coliforms. Senior lecturer in microbiology at London Metropolitan University Dr Paul Matewele said: ‘We were all surprised how much gut and faecal bacteria there was on the touchscreen machines. These cause the kind of infections that people pick up in hospitals.

Every McDonald’s screen that was swabbed was found to have poo bacteria on them

The machines have been rolled out in McDonald’s branches across the UK ‘For instance Enterococcus faecalis is part of the flora of gastrointestinal tracts of healthy humans and other mammals. It is notorious in hospitals for causing hospital acquired infections.’ Unsuspecting diners choose their food on the touchscreens then head to the server to pick up their burgers more often than not without washing their hands.

A screen at one branch was found to have staphylococcus, a bacteria that can cause blood poisoning and toxic shock syndrome. Dr Matewele said: ‘Seeing Staphylococcus on these machines is worrying because it is so contagious. ‘It starts around people’s noses, if they touch their nose with their fingers and then transfer it to the touchscreen someone else will get it, and if they have an open cut which it gets into, then it can be dangerous.

‘There is a lot of worries at the moment that staphylococcus is becoming resistant to antibiotics. However, it is still really dangerous in places like Africa where it can cause toxic shock.’ Metro.co.uk’s study with the university’s school of human sciences involved swabs taken from eight McDonald’s restaurants. Six in London and two in Birmingham. Listeria bacteria was found in Oxford Street and Holloway Road branches. It can cause listeriosis which can lead to miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women. Dr Matewele said: ‘Listeria is another rare bacterium we were shocked to find on touchscreen machines as again this can be very contagious and a problem for those with a weak immune system.’ Three quarters of the screens swabbed showed traces of the bacteria proteus.

Dr Matewele said: ‘Proteus can be found in human and animal faeces. It is also widely distributed in soil. It can cause urinary tract infections and is also one of the hospital acquired infections where it may responsible for septicaemia. ‘Klebsiella is also from the gut and mouth, they are associated with urinary tract infections, septicemia and diarrhoea. Some species can infect the respiratory tract resulting in pneumonia.’

Dr Matewele added: ‘Touchscreen technology is being used more and more in our daily lives but these results show people should not eat food straight after touching them, they are unhygienic and can spread disease. ‘Someone can be very careful about their own hygiene throughout the day but it could all be undone by using a touchscreen machine once.’ McDonald’s does clean the screens with disinfectant but Dr Matewele said it ‘could not have been strong enough.

He added: ‘These bacteria can be on touchscreen machines for days on end. A McDonald’s spokesman said: ‘Our self-order screens are cleaned frequently throughout the day. All of our restaurants also provide facilities for customers to wash their hands before eating.’

46. "I use them if I have like 3 items AND theres a wait for a regular line"
In response to Reply # 0

Otherwise I'm good. I love ordering food using apps IF it means I can order ahead of time and just walk in and pick it up skipping the line, and the app is good and makes it easy. The Chipotle app is a great example.

I've never used the screens at McDonalds. It doesn't save me any time and its easier for me to just say "#2 with a Coke" to a person rather than trying to navigate some interface. And I'm young and tech savvy. I imagine theres not a chance in hell any older person is going to use that given the option. It's also been a long time since I've actually gone inside a McDonalds rather than using the drive through.

They make more sense when you have a really custom or complicated order, like the ones for sandwiches at Wawa. Then its easier for you to see all the options and pick and choose what you want.

Also there's nothing worse than using the self checkout and getting the "Wait for associate" message, completely negating the time savings and making you interact with a person anyway.

thats what i liked about the taco bell app. i could upgrade my cheesy gordita crunch with steak and see how much more it would cost right there. let them know im there and bam!

if you have multiple people ordering then its the only way to do it.
