"Poll question: You're in the bathroom, you hear someone else violently throwing up."
Mon Jan-07-19 10:17 AM by shygurl

Last night I'm at the gym changing from my work clothes into my workout clothes, and I hear somebody a few stalls over throwing up for a good 5 or 6 minutes. As I was dressing, I debated to go and ask if they needed help once I was completely dressed, but by the time I was leaving the stall they had already left.

I know if it was me, I would have wanted to be left the fuck alone, but the way I want to interact with people I don't know is probably not a good standard to go by. I'm pondering what should have been the right move.

I figured since it was the beginning of the year, it was just a newbie who went to hard in the paint and whose body was reacting to that.

So I wouldn't take the results of this survey as what normal folks would do.

But the right answer is to just least ask are they ok or need anything.

A simple "Are you ok sir/ma'am?" would be good enough. They may be ok, but what if they're not?

I notice a lot of people on here don't seem like the type to help a stranger or at least be kind enough to ask if they need assistance. Weird.

About someone having a different opinion.

But won't take five seconds out of their day to ask someone violently throwing up if they're ok.

What's that tell you?

Ehhh. It’s not that simple, tho. LOL. I admit to being introverted and anti-social but I’m the type of person to ask people if they’re good. I’d love to hand folks wipes, tissues, plastic bags, pain killer or whatever they need, if I have it.

I was at my boy’s wedding reception. It’s after dinner, after the first dance and the DJ is warming things up, trying to get people on the floor. There’s certainly been a bit of drinking but like I said, it’s very early in the reception.

I hit the restroom and I hear a dude throwing up in the stall. Dude sounded like he was in bad shape. I didn’t ask who it was but I did say, “Hey man, are you alright?’

He replied, “Yeah, I’ll be fine.”

I shrugged and KIM.

As I stepped out of the restroom, this chick I know (but don’t particularly care for) asks me if Joe is in the restroom. I told her I don’t know who Joe is. She said he’s her date to the wedding (that still doesn’t help me).

I tell her to hold on for a second. I go back in and ask the puking dude if he’s Joe. He mumbles that he is.

So I tell her that he’s in there and he’s puking. I told her I asked if he needed help & he said, “No.”

She said she would handle it & I didn’t stick around to see how that happened. But Joe was the talk of the wedding by the end of the night.

This, but after asking if they need help first. I wouldn’t try to stick around. I am overcoming a fear of vomit after breaking a 15+ year streak of not vomiting last year. I think I got food poisoning from the Whole Foods salad and hot food bar.

and no one asked me anything or tried to help. I managed to get to a chair in the locker room and passed out in it for about a half hour (I was blind at this point - it was like someone was shining flashlights into my eyes. I did a full body workout, plus 40 minutes on the treadmill, to make up for having missed the gym all that week - all on a completely empty stomach. I think I was there for maybe 3.5 hours doing all that).

Because I'm an anti-social introvert I never thought anything of that aspect of it, until reading this. My big takeaway had always been just not to work out so hard, especially on an empty stomach.

Years ago I was in the gym getting it in listening to music. The same gym employee kept walking back and forth past me as if they were looking for something. Finish my set, look over and there's a guy laid out on the floor at the foot of a treadmill. Shit, so that's what that was about. By this point several minutes had passed before I got up, took off the headphones and saw what was going on. I run over to him, take his pulse and feel for breathing... nothing. Lifeguard shows up from downstairs right after, starts CPR (was like 5 minutes by this point, according to people that saw everything). I wish I'd have been there to see everything form the beginning. Not sure what happened, but it didn't look good (still wasn't breathing when EMS got there). Still haunts me, and makes me take that extra second to ask people if they need any help.

Gonna have to change my answer above to "ask if they need help", your reply put things into perspective for me.

was going to be the very last thing I did before leaving. I cut them short and stood up and my legs felt like wet noodles. Then my vision started getting blurry. My big fear was falling and hitting my head on some bar or plate. I started to move towards the locker room and bumped into a guy because I couldn't see anything. I was surprised that he didn't get mad. I had to feel along the walls to get to the water fountain, which was next to the locker room door. I just now did some Googling and I'm guessing I was going blind because the blood wasn't flowing to my eyes. Had no idea until 10 minutes ago (this happened in 2003 or 2004).

That person could be so shook with what's going on with them that they're not thinking about that.

That's like saying someone choking at a restaurant should write "help me" on a napkin lol.

Normally if you see or hear someone in distress you ask if they're ok, they'll give you some type of sign that they need help or they'll let you know its ok.

Looking at it again I assume that you mean you’d say that to them and tell them to knock if they need help. In that case then good, that’s enough for someone to have done their part in asking.

I assumed that you mean you’d wait to hear the person banging on the door first before you said anything lol.

than a person that's going through some things and wants to be left the hell alone to get through what they're going through.

i've been with my mans & nem while they were going through alcohol poisoining. we called the AMBALANCE that night.

i've been with my peoples when they ate too much or came to practice and went hard after a long ass night and they called earl. ALOT.

they didnnt need an intervention. they needed space and time. leave em the hell alone and let them get through what they're going through.

Hit em with a "you good?" and keep it movin

Da fuck does being antisocial have to do with anything? If someone's health is at risk you should care about it. It's called being a decent human.
