"Mad Dog Mattis: "This dude's crazy! I'm done.""

Prepare for defense secretary Mick Mulvaney.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/20/us/politics/jim-mattis-defense-secretary-trump.html

From his letter:

"One core belief I have always held is that our strength as a nation is inextricably linked to the strength of our unique and comprehensive system of alliances and partnerships. While the US remains the indispensable nation in the free world, we cannot protect our interests or serve that role effectively without maintaining strong alliances and showing respect to those allies."

stock market tanking, pulling out of syria (maybe afghanistan), lifting sanctions on a russian oligarch directly implicated in mueller investigation, kelly out, mattis out, govt shutdown, etc.

basically all at once.

shit is gonna get even crazier in 2019.

seeing/hearing repub reactions to all of this...i think even they know a lot of their constituents are thinking about getting off the trump train.

That kinda shocks me, because it seems like the most blatant scandal of them all right now. But I guess the Syria thing forced some friction with GOP senators, so of course that's what gets covered.

I almost think he announced the Syria thing to distract from the Deripaska thing. But if so, right now it looks like that backfired.

and/foundation stuff but i don't even know anymore only because they tend toward reaction rather than anticipation

There's so many narratives to change at this point we'll have to pull out of Ft. Benning shortly just to keep shifting focus

Turkey has wanted us out of Syria, too, and apparently Trump spoke with Erdogan just a few days ago. (Remember that the administration just left Turkey hanging, ignoring their case on Mohammed bin Salman.)

The talking heads, as they flail around for an explanation to this Syria pullout, are trying to avoid conspiracy theories. But I think they're giving this President too much credit.

As we speak, his base is averaging $3 million dollars a day in fundraising for his xenophobe wall. And as long as his base rides for him, GOP gon ride as well. Its spineless but it's politics. It'll take a lot more for the party to turn on him in a meaningful way.

My views on treating allies with respect . and also being clear-eyed about both malign actors and strategic competitors are strongly held and informed by over four decades of immersion . in these issues… Because you have the right to have a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours on these and other subjects, I believe it is right for me to step down from my position.

So I don't see it.

Until recently I thought he was running for Attorney General. But nowadays he seems to have given up on a Trump post and is trying to distance himself.

Of course Mattis will get out once Trump makes a small step towards a more humble foreign policy. The idea we should be worried about a warmonger stepping down is ridiculous.

He was perfectly aligned with the president’s decisions when he was dropping MOABs, provoking Russia, and helping to starve Yemen.

You know that resignation letter was too long to hold his attention, used way to many big words in it and not enough “Trumps” in it to keep his attention.
